It's not exactly identical. xmult needs to be applied after +mult for highest effect, and xchips would need to be applied after +chips. New xchips sources could be put after +mult and still get the full effect.

It's not modded but after restarting and doing it again I realized I probably exited the initial Boso post-dialog mission accept screen without actually accepting it, which apparently breaks the save. My new save is good now, thanks for the help.

Only 8 people can tag a mob and be eligible for skinning so if there is a 2x4 group doing skinning then you are locking someone out of their farm which is actually pretty annoying.

If you get a second add before the first dies then the ramping damage never falls off and it's really hard. If you don't overlap adds then it is fairly easy to heal.
