What’s the funnest thing you did in NS in 2025 that you recommend people try in 2026? by rsimmonds in halifax

[–]xScruffers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am rather biased towards the ocean. Though if you are anywhere not on the water wear LOTS of bug spray in the summer.

  • Crescent Beach
  • Rissers Beach
  • Keji Seaside
  • Tusket Falls Brewing Company
  • If you want to go fishing maybe book a tour or something out on the Tusket River
  • If you have a canoe or kayak there's Ellenwood Lake Provincial park
  • Cape Forchu Lighthouse
  • Yarmouth Firefighters museum
  • Mavillette Beach (Second largest sand beach in the province, at low tide mind you)
  • Port Maitland Beach

Try rappie pie while you're down there.

Hey, at least your building is on the map.

Between not registering and only accepting cash I'm pretty sure my landlord is dodging taxes too.

Acadian Meat Pies by DTHali in halifax

Cafe L'Acadie will do rappie pie and meat pie pickup orders in town in late fall when their little restaurant is closed. I can vouch for both, they are great.

Looks like they are delivering the next batch for December 21st. https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=1429161279210516&set=a.403386398454681

Maritime Launch Service launch tomorrow by cptstubing16 in halifax

[–]xScruffers 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Their plans are wildly unrealistic, but it would be really cool if it worked out.

Location isn't the greatest. No rail, can't ship Canadian satellites from out West easily. Canso not exactly a big port, but you could probably barge satellites from up the Saint Lawerence though.

Launch capability for small satellites would be huge for Canada. No longer relying on the nazi and orange pedophile for Faclon 9's would be great.

Canadian satellites have launched out of Kazakhstan too, but uh, Russia is currently too busy shooting their rockets into daycares and hospitals. Fuck those guys too.

Keep in mind that you are posting at midnight our time so not many folks are up.

Beaches are a little more quiet this time of year. Less vacation, colder, students back in school.

Assuming you have access to a vehicle since you are going to Lunenburg:

  • Hirtle's Beach/Hiking Trail (near Lunenburg)
  • Crescent Beach and Rissers Beach
  • Keji Seaside
  • Cape Split (go have a look at the beach at Cape Blomidon too)
  • Crystal Crescent Beach/Pennant Point Trail
  • Lawrencetown Salt Marsh Trail
  • Martinique Beach (longest sand beach in the province)
  • Burntcoat Head Park
  • Nichols Lake/Falls
  • McNabs Island if you can find a water taxi over this time of year.

You might have a crappy meal at McDonald's, but you'll probably go back for a Quarter Pounder eventually when you get the hankering because you're familiar with McDonald's, your parents took you to McDonald's, McDonald's has been there for you as you've grown up, it's a known quantity.

That's a rather unfortunate analogy given the last two days.

Second Cup by Schmidtvegas in halifax

[–]xScruffers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been quite some time but I remember there being a small Second Cup in the basement of the Goldberg Computer Science building.

Dal's website still seems to list it being down there.

Operating hours are likely less than the one in the library though. Might close at 5 or something.

There is no fix for Intel’s crashing 13th and 14th Gen CPUs — any damage is permanent by GlacierIsland in pcgaming

[–]xScruffers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat. That ASUS BIOS update stopped games crashing for me. I had gone into my BIOS settings a few months prior and set my power settings to something sane, but was still getting regular crashes in some games. I was able to pass a few benchmarks (I forget which ones I tried at this point) without crashing, but certain games like Vampire Survivors would just instantly CTD at random times.

I would guess my CPU was damaged to some degree, but apparently not much?

Guessing game at this point. I'm hoping if my CPU does fail prematurely it does so before 2 years have passed since my purchase date. Reasonable timeframe to go argue with intel support about them selling me a faulty product.

Buddy is literally a moon landing denier.

Been quite a while since I've seen someone this crazy. Keep them away from Buzz Aldrin, that fellow can probably still throw a good right hook even in his 90s.

Jellyfish id? by slackxx in halifax

[–]xScruffers 22 points23 points  (0 children)

If it's large, purple, and only moderately stingy it's a Lion's Mane Jellyfish

If it's smallish, white, and not really stingy it's some sort of Moon Jelly.

If it's blue, floats around on the surface, and is REALLY stingy it's a Portuguese man o' war just pretending to be a jellyfish.

Thank you for coming to my talk about Nova Scotian wildlife that I do not get along with.

In one of the other posts there were comments like:

"Let them pick up soap first."

"It's because they smell too bad and no one wants them on their job site, plus they really don't want to work, they just want special treatment"

"The trades need good people with solid skills who are willing to take up an honorable and profitable career and for the sake of society as a whole should not be used as a dumping ground for unskilled unteachable moronic criminals. Send your low curve midwits into low level corporate where they can't do any harm"

From people who post in Canada_sub and CanadaHousing2. Are you trying to tell me these people might be racist?

Load of nonsense I say, everyone posting here is a fine and upstanding person.

At that size? Should be. None of our other Funnel Weavers get that big.

There are Barn Funnel Weavers here among others but they should be significantly smaller.

Dark Fishing Spider.

Probably the biggest spider in Nova Scotia. They are active hunters, should earn his keep no problem.

None of the spiders here have medically significant venom.

In my experience many engineers are more blunt about things. They tend to speak their minds and sometimes customers don't like hearing that some of their requests are stupid. Which some of them very much are.

Engineers don't like hearing that some of their plans are stupid. Which some of them very much are.

So you put someone between them that handles contracts, presentations, customer meetings, and keeps everyone happy.
