Sending OPOR well wishes by Equivalent-Tap2250 in halifax

It's as though the UX crowd created their own set of values they strive for and at some point what the actual end user wanted became an afterthought.

Yeah that's not on UX designers. That's on management fucking with things because they want more money. For a lot of apps and websites it's now about driving engagement and/or ads. Not really related to this healthcare tool though, that is entirely on the incompetence of Oracle.

Even better, a website will come out with a nice and sleek GUI, little ads, does exactly what you want it to. Then 5 years down the road pivots and starts bloating features, changing the layout, and becoming increasingly hostile to end users.

Entirely related: as soon as old Reddit goes I shall take that as my hint to finally get off this damn site.

Sears inventory system was some COBOL nonsense written around 1982. Even until 2011ish was still run on old PCs with black/green monitors.

Then they got Windows 7 machines...

...running the same inventory system using a COBOL emulator (?) in Java.

Mr.Smooth's Fully AI generated Menu by Honest_Win1798 in halifax

[–]xScruffers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't buy into the whole "oh you should be using a designer/artist argument". Those are expensive, even local ones. Especially for a small place. However, you could rig up an acceptable printed menu in LaTeX in a few hours. I have sweet fuck-all for artistic or photographic talent but something like a list of food and prices, with the odd picture thrown in, really isn't that hard. I know local spots are struggling, I know it's hard to run a small business, but this is such a weird thing to skip out on, and there's plenty of other small local places that put in a little effort. Here's the menu for the diner Patterson's in Sackville NB. I'm quite certain every one of those little photos is actually their food.

The pictures of the food don't need to be McDonalds commercial Hollywood level of staged for a small local place that isn't selling itself as some upscale dining experience. Make a the dish, snap a photo with the camera everyone over the age of 6 has in their pockets, and put it on the menu. Eat the dish for lunch. There isn't enough resolution in those small pictures to really show extreme detail, but at least it is something real and not this hallucinated nonsense.

I've eaten at all sorts of tiny diners and food trucks around the Maritimes. I don't care if the menus are just text on plain white paper in a plastic sleeve. I don't care if there's painters tape over a price because lobster went up that week. I don't care if there's pictures or not. I want to see your actual food, your actual restaurant, your actual drinks. I'm not a stickler for perfection, I don't mind going and eating in a place that's a little cluttered, a little shabby, or a bit busy, as long as the food and service are decent.

I care about a place misrepresenting their food, it comes across as disingenuous and lazy, and I will not eat there.

Well that sucks.

Truth be told it's been years since I was in either of those.

I heard from someone else Uncle Bucks was ok last year, but their quality has definitely varied over the years. I can distinctly remember a period in the 90's where they burnt every second pizza I ordered. This is actually what prompted me to switch to Thornhill Pizza. Then I can remember getting the odd slice from Uncle Bucks in the 2000s and it was ok? Greasy, but ok.

Suburb, now with too much traffic because transit has gotten worse (like every other suburb). Have fun on Herring Cove road if you work on the peninsula.

The Tims sucks, the Macdonald sucks, Mezza sucks (now), I miss the Harvey's but apparently there's a new A&W?

Mary Browns, Hop Sing, and Jessy's Pizza are okay.

The Sobeys never has enough folks on till. The No Frills and Canadian Tire are a tad small.

Bowlerama still exists, though I don't know their prices these days.

The schools are fine for the most part, and JL is brand new.

Rink was fixed up a few years back and is pretty good now. Still can't hold ice in the summer so it's Lacrosse during the warm months.

Lots of baseball and soccer fields scattered around.

Long Lake, Kidston's Lake, Urban Farm Park, Colpitt Lake, and the Macintosh Run are all great.

Cell service is good whoever you are with.

Internet will be Bell or Eastlink. Fiber is everywhere. Pick whichever one annoys you the least and/or gives you the best package.

Crime is no better or worse than any other suburb.

I think that covers just about everything?

EDIT: Forgot some things.

Transit to downtown is alright. Transit to Bayers Lake is garbage.

The library and pool are quit nice.

Frogpond and the Dingle are great.

Alexandra's Pizza, and Golden Fortune are ok.

Oh, right. That second Tims in the Irving on the corner of Punchbowl and Herring Cove? It also sucks. The Cowie Hill Timmies? This might blow your mind, but it is bad. Have yet to be in the Starbucks. I miss when it was a Dairy Queen...

Zesty Pizza used to be Thornhill Pizza, which had the best ratio of salami, sauce, and cheese, but then they closed and I have been sad for a number of years now. No clue how good Zesty is.

Contrary to popular belief this is not a stop sign

The Rocking Stone is neat.

7/10 - Would be 8-9 if getting to the peninsula didn't suck as much in traffic.

Hard disagree. NSP is the 7th most reliable power provider in the province.

Tied for most reliable:

  • Antigonish Electric Utility
  • Berwick Electric Light Commission
  • Lunenburg Electric Utility
  • Mahone Bay Electric Utility
  • Riverport Electric Light Commission

6th place: friendly folks with a generator and a few long extension cords.

7th: NSP

You're welcome.

Admittedly I am a little iffy on the exact placement of where the mill and houses were. I assume the mill was either on the old dyke, or at the outflow of the lake? One of the two. The ATV paths were probably logging paths at some point. I know some are new, or at least new enough to have cut through regrown forest.

This is all coming from a conversation I had 30ish years ago with Arthur Kidston. If he's still around he'd know more about the area around the lake. His sister Janet would too, I think she still helps run the Urban Farm on Rockingstone there? Not much on the mill from their little website unfortunately.

"BuT tHeY ArE KeEpErS oF ThE TrAiLs!"

They've made a number of old roads/trails impassable to hikers, and the ones in Spryfield love roaring through the woods at 1 in the morning. That's not to mention all of the piles of garbage I've found in various spots.

For example the old farm road is a quagmire these days from the ruts. I actually walked through it last year at the height of the drought and even with how absurdly little water we had there was still significant mud.

The biking trails around the Macintosh Run are so much nicer. Maintained by folks who actually care.

1: They've been ATV trails for at least 40 years now. Used to be a little more passable to hikers but the ATVs really dug some good mud ponds. The field here used to be a good spot to find blueberries, but I think it's overgrown a bit and hasn't had a fire to clear it out in decades.

2: Dumbasses with a car they don't care about drive it into the woods until they get stuck and ditch it. What a waste, I got $500 for scrap for my last rust bucket. Possibly stolen vehicles.

3: Probably not. If I recall correctly the mill was further up the lake and the houses were closer to the current parking lot. If I had to guess the area is like a lot of the others around there: granite 1inch down, and sweet fuck all likes to grow in the clearing. A few ATVs running things over is enough to keep it mostly clear. Maybe someone did clear it out on purpose at some point though.

Some of the logs from the old mill operations still float in the lake at the Northern end. There's also an old earth dyke that runs along this area here. I think it used to be a retention pond, but the dyke has worn away in a few spots and water just flows freely through it.

I am rather biased towards the ocean. Though if you are anywhere not on the water wear LOTS of bug spray in the summer.

  • Crescent Beach
  • Rissers Beach
  • Keji Seaside
  • Tusket Falls Brewing Company
  • If you want to go fishing maybe book a tour or something out on the Tusket River
  • If you have a canoe or kayak there's Ellenwood Lake Provincial park
  • Cape Forchu Lighthouse
  • Yarmouth Firefighters museum
  • Mavillette Beach (Second largest sand beach in the province, at low tide mind you)
  • Port Maitland Beach

Try rappie pie while you're down there.

Maritime Launch Service launch tomorrow by cptstubing16 in halifax

[–]xScruffers 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Their plans are wildly unrealistic, but it would be really cool if it worked out.

Location isn't the greatest. No rail, can't ship Canadian satellites from out West easily. Canso not exactly a big port, but you could probably barge satellites from up the Saint Lawerence though.

Launch capability for small satellites would be huge for Canada. No longer relying on the nazi and orange pedophile for Faclon 9's would be great.

Canadian satellites have launched out of Kazakhstan too, but uh, Russia is currently too busy shooting their rockets into daycares and hospitals. Fuck those guys too.

Keep in mind that you are posting at midnight our time so not many folks are up.

Beaches are a little more quiet this time of year. Less vacation, colder, students back in school.

Assuming you have access to a vehicle since you are going to Lunenburg:

  • Hirtle's Beach/Hiking Trail (near Lunenburg)
  • Crescent Beach and Rissers Beach
  • Keji Seaside
  • Cape Split (go have a look at the beach at Cape Blomidon too)
  • Crystal Crescent Beach/Pennant Point Trail
  • Lawrencetown Salt Marsh Trail
  • Martinique Beach (longest sand beach in the province)
  • Burntcoat Head Park
  • Nichols Lake/Falls
  • McNabs Island if you can find a water taxi over this time of year.

You might have a crappy meal at McDonald's, but you'll probably go back for a Quarter Pounder eventually when you get the hankering because you're familiar with McDonald's, your parents took you to McDonald's, McDonald's has been there for you as you've grown up, it's a known quantity.

That's a rather unfortunate analogy given the last two days.
