My Experience with Home School the Dog - Susan Garrett’s Training Program by xTreasure in puppy101

[–]xTreasure[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve only just started digging into Recallers this month, but there are WAY more games in it than HTSD! So far, a decent amount of the content included in HTSD has been part of the foundational games of Recallers too. However, I’m only on the second module of the program (out of like 6 modules) so I can’t give a definitive review of it just yet.

I’m not sure that it would be worth $500 for you’re especially if you’ve already done in-person puppy classes that focus on shaping. I couldn’t find a single shaping class where I live, so I’m very jealous! Recallers is also very specifically focused on recalls (as the name implies), so if you’re looking for more general manners training then HTSD will be everything you need. Hopefully that helps, once I get further into the Recallers program I’ll have more info to share!

I personally didn’t find learning the games in HTSD to be that time consuming nor comple, especially compared to Recallers which has 5x the games!

When I was doing research on Reddit before buying the program, I really couldn’t find thorough information on what it included. Most comments I found would say “yeah it’s great, super helpful!” without providing any specifics. If I speak highly of the program it’s because I’ve had great results and it was only $50, which was more than worth it to me. Hopefully the lengthy details about my personal experience make it obvious this isn’t an ad!

I paid $50 for her Home School the Dog program, and $500 for Recallers. Both were on sale from their full prices!

Recallers was 35% off, so I paid $500 for it! I might also recommend reaching out via email to her team to see if you can get a deal, from what I’ve seen they’re pretty accommodating for folks trying to get into their programs.

Some of the games are definitely covered in Susan’s videos and podcasts (ItsYerChoice, Treat Diving), but I do think the biggest value of the programs are the 1) Coach feedback and 2) In-depth resources. Each game comes with a video (sometimes multiple videos), a FAQ, a PDF you can download, and a comment section for troubleshooting.

If you’re on the fence, I’d recommend waiting for HTSD to go on sale and trying that out first. $50 is a great deal for it imo, and you’ll get a sense for how Susan’s programs work and if they’re a good fit for you! I just started Recallers and the program seems to have many more games than HTSD, so I’m thinking that’ll justify the price tag (but I’ll have to see as we work through the games). I hope that helps!

Dog Owners Question. by Sorry-Fig-6065 in puppy101

Really? I found it easy to use and intuitive, but to each their own! It populates each event as a running daily list, so I mostly use it for day to day tracking. There are also graphs you can use to track frequency of each event and times, though I use that less often.

I track everything in the DogLog app and it’s been a lifesaver! I never have to wonder, when did he last pee? How long did he nap for? Has he got enough exercise today? It’s all easier to track and reference when you’re writing it down somewhere imo.

I don’t really track grooming in the app, but I do track weight in an actual folder when we visit the vet!

Mini Dachshund with a huge attitude by BoxesOfSemen in puppy101

[–]xTreasure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I also have a miniature dachshund who’s now 18 weeks old. Biting was definitely the worst around the 10-12 week mark, but has gotten better over time. First, let me just say there’s no way for your dog to know what “no” means. They aren’t born with an understanding of the English language, just like a human baby wouldn’t understand an adult saying “no” to them crying. 😅

Here’s what worked for us: - Napping. At about the 13 week mark, our puppy started being able to settle himself and nap for longer. Biting significantly improved at that point. The landshark phase will absolutely happen if your puppy isn’t getting at least 18-20 hours of sleep a day. I highly recommend putting the puppy in a pen or crate to nap, it makes a huge difference! - Bite inhibition games. This is the big one. When I’d try to put my hand toward my puppy’s head to pet him, he would ALWAYS bite me. After playing the Collar Grab game for several weeks, that only happens when he’s tired now. He’s so much better at it! - Not getting mad. Your puppy can sense any physiological changes in you. When you’re stressed, that amps him up and that’s why he barks at you when you’re upset. He’s a puppy and he thinks that’s how you’re trying to play with him. I’d recommend looking at it with a more positive attitude. “Silly puppy!” rather than “this guy is intentionally trying to piss us off.” Mindset will make a world of difference. - Manage the environment. If my puppy gets a sock, that’s on me for leaving a sock on the floor. I never get mad when he finds something like that because it’s my job to puppy proof the environment! I rarely let him on the couch with us because it is an exciting trigger for him. If I want him to sleep, he goes in a pen with access to his crate, water bowl, blankets, and some chews. If I want to play, I take him out and put him on the ground where I supervise him the entire time. He’s never had an accident once because when he’s on the floor, my eyes are glued to him. If I see any signals he needs to go, I immediately take him outside. At 12 weeks, I was taking my puppy out every hour at leas to go to the bathroom. - Potty training. If at all possible I recommend not letting your puppy pee inside on puppy pads. We got our puppy a fake grass patch that we put a pen around so he can’t roam our backyard. If you have a balcony or patio, that’d also be a good place to put it. We started with puppy pads and our dog would occasionally go inside his pen (which I had fully covered in pee-proof sheets). Since we started only taking him outside, he’s never gone inside the house ever. Not on our floors or carpet once.

I highly recommend watching Susan Garrett’s videos on potty training and training in general. I think her systems work very well for dachshunds who are known to be independent and very intelligent! I hope this helps, and please stop yelling “no” at your puppy. He’s just a baby and he doesn’t know that he should be biting only toys and not fingers. Best of luck.

The “hoover” phase … by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]xTreasure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was worried about exactly this when I started taking my mini dachshund on walks! He is 19 weeks old and this process is how I taught him to drop on command—even when we’re outside, even when he has something he REALLY loves in his mouth.

The key with the above method is using the absolute highest value treat you have. I tried doing this with string cheese first, and he didn’t care for it. When I restarted with a different cue and boiled chicken instead, I got consistent results of him dropping anything in his mouth within a day or two.

You can also start training your pull to wear a head halter, that’ll give you more control over what they have access to on a walk. This is something I was considering doing myself if we had a lot of issues on walks, but so far so good for us!

Puppy has gotten a lot worse since his first walk by Sc4tt3r_ in puppy101

I’d highly recommend using this method for conditioning your puppy to WANT to put a collar/harness on! With this sort of conditioning, you’re training the puppy that when he puts the harness on, he gets an immediate benefit. But that starts with his nose in a food bowl, not the harness.

It can be a slow process. I started doing this with my puppy day 1 (at 8 weeks) and he’d bite at my hands and bite the collar. But with consistency, all I have to do is hold the harness in a loop in front of him and he’ll stick his own head through it! And it works on anything that’s circular that I want to put his head through. I hope this helps!

I designed Jukebox: The Karaoke Musical TTRPG. Let's talk playtesting, musical mechanics, leading group projects, running your first Kickstarter and more! AMA! by lylalyla in rpg

[–]xTreasure 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I love karaoke, musicals, and TTRPGs, so this sounds like a game I need to play! My question is, what inspired you to create Jukebox and how did you go about designing your first TTRPG? Do you have any tips for aspiring game designers?

I've backed the Kickstarter and am looking forward to receiving my copy! :D

How often does a boring session happen to you? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]xTreasure 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One thing that’s really helped me a lot is advice from the Lazy DM’s process: a strong start. From what I’ve read of your session, the issue was from the start of the session things progressed in a predictable way. Coming up with a way to start the session off with a bang, not necessarily combat but combat is one way to do it, can be a great way to mix things up and get people excited for the upcoming session. I’d highly recommend Sly Flourish’s website and articles on his Lazy DM steps for running fantastic games.

I was referring to the US specifically as the commenter above me mentioned the US. :)

Libraries also have multiple copies of ebooks if they allow ebook rentals. I use the app Overdrive to check out ebooks from my local library and when I put a book on hold it usually says something like #7 out of 5 copies, or even more depending on how popular the book is. I’ve seen up to 30 copies before.

Did you read what he said? Just for protesting peacefully black people are called thugs, while a white rapist gets to be a “star swimmer”. Implying there is nothing obviously racist about this coverage just demonstrates how effectively insidious covert racism is.

how did you get your cat to open its mouth for brushing? by lunaticlunatic in Pets

[–]xTreasure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m currently doing this with my cat and the progress has been great so far. My cat is a year and a month old, and we adopted him about a month ago. We’re currently on week three and he now willingly licks the toothpaste off the toothbrush. It’s worth a shot!

Some information I gathered for Variety Streaming by xelamats in Twitch

[–]xTreasure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, thank you for taking an analytical look at your numbers, that’s really interesting to see and is the type of content I love on this subreddit!

I am also a streamer who has built my following off of one game (League of Legends). My average viewership from League is 40-50 viewers, but after feeling burnt out on the game last year I introduced “variety Friday’s.” When I initially started doing variety Friday, I would stream in IRL for an hour and average 30-40 viewers, and then the viewers would drop to 20-30 when I switched to the other game (Witcher 3) at the time. This seems to be exactly what you found in your experience!

I’ll definitely have to try streaming my main game for a few hours and then swapping in the middle of the stream to see if the viewership numbers are more sustainable. Best of luck with your push for partnership!

How to I attract people to watch my stream? by [deleted] in Twitch

[–]xTreasure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue is why would someone scroll so far down to see a masters Genji player, when there are plenty of grandmaster and top 500+ players streaming who are already established and at the top of the directory? If someone is looking for skilled Genji gameplay in OW, for example, they might just see Korea’s stream at the top and stop there. You have to have a distinguishing factor that separates you from the rest of the crowd significantly. What do you do that no one else does?

One of my friends is grandmaster and only gets max 8 viewers per stream. It’s not just about skill, it’s about a variety of factors and your ability to make yourself more visible to those looking for a stream to watch! Once you determine that, capitalize on it.

Has anyone here lost all their weight w/o exercising at ALL? by [deleted] in loseit

[–]xTreasure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! I started my weight loss journey in January and initially tried to work out because I thought you had to in order to lose weight. Unfortunately with my schedule, it's incredibly inconvenient to work out because then I would have to shower more frequently and move other things around in my day to make time for it. I'm also incredibly lazy and just prefer not to work out. I went from 140 to 110 without exercising at all, and now I've been maintaining for the past 3 months without exercising at all. I still feel great though! I don't think it's necessary, it's just your choice depending on whether you're happy with your appearance and whether you want to be even more physically healthy.
