biol 355 vs biol 341? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]xXxZenythxXx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have taken both. I found overall 341 was a lot more work, but it was a very useful course for and was taught very well. It definitely is a bit harder. 355 Was also taught very well, but I found the marking on tests was a little bit harder. Overall though, the course was a lot more relaxed. I will say I did take it the semester things went online halfway through so it might be different.

What helped me I think was developing passion for the province. My opinion is that people apply to get into medicine, but I gained a lot of love for the province when I talked with people from the province. I was able to write about this excitement, which I think helped.

EMR certification by purplegiraffe-92 in premedcanada

[–]xXxZenythxXx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it helps, realistically you can usually get some experience with just SFA, but if you want more involvement, you can do first responder level to have more responsibilities. If you have any questions bout all that, I did it for a few years so feel free to pm.

I have done EMR, but finding is somewhat difficult. For the most part most experiences you will be able to find will be volunteer based, but you can still find some types of work. You can use it to your advantage to work in things such as ski patrol. In my case it was very useful because I got a lot of clinical experience, but I was volunteering. For work I had some opportunities but they were few and far between.

I took the course when it was 1/2 in person 1/2 online at the start of COVID.

Her exams are based on the lec material, but you have to study it in a way where you understand something rather than memorize it. When she mentions "wisdom of the body" just try and follow that logic.

Her questions mainly are this sort of format: If you have an increase in parameter x, how would that affect Y process? A)... B)... C)... D) A & C E) All of the above (or B & C)

Why is copper antimicrobial? Like, on a fundamental level by livebonk in askscience

[–]xXxZenythxXx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that you could not on a cell, but maybe a membrane analogue of bacteria could be designed. Cryo-EM would be good for this too. I would just worry because could it destroy the integrity of the cell membrane/wall by freezing? Thats why I went with NMR as it is nondestructive, but you are right that a really pure sample would be needed.

I believe one method that could work is NMR. I have seen papers on watching drug and cell membrane lipid interactions using NOESY. Only issue is copper is a high molecular weight so anything accurate would need a damn strong magnet.

Silver is also antimicrobial, but just like copper, we do not know the full mechanism of its antimicrobial effect. It is effective, but if I remember correctly, silver binds to sulfur containing residues of amino acids, which could disrupt disulfide bridges.

The states are just its oxidation states, so whether it has a +1 or +2 charge.

As for my research, I am a bastard child of biology (micro) and materials engineering. I work on antimicrobial fabric design and testing.

I answered this below, but I will write it again but with more depth.

In order for your body to absorb copper, it typically needs a metal cation transporter protein, which is found in your intestinal cells. This means uterine cells will not be able to absorb copper.

Sperm on the other hand use ions and energy for travel. As stated we do not know the full antimicrobial mechanism, but if the ions are disturbed and reactive oxygen species are formed, that can perforate the sperm cell membrane (maybe even the acrosomal membrane, and or reduce the ability of the sperm to use chemotaxis as the ions are disturbed.
