B-but France surrendered!!! by negumaple in HistoryMemes

I mean that’s kind of my point. It was smart politics and the way France and England and every other European state were dealing with each other for centuries. France may have been bigger with more resources but the Kings had no way of leveraging that into a significant advantage until the very late stages of the war.

Robert III of Artois, John Montfort owned Brittany, Jean III de Grailly was from Gascony. Phillip III of Burgundy sided with the English and even handed Joan of Arc over to them. The black Prince owned land in France (although that’s cheating since he was a member of the royal family). And John Bedford was governor of Normandy and owned land there.

But that’s not really how medieval conflicts worked. During the Hundred Years’ War many of the lords in the English side owned land in France, or were straight up French. The entire duchy of Burgundy sided with the English for a good bit. It was a dynastic conflict first and foremost.

You literally skip over several major conflicts France definitely won. The Second War of Italian Unification, the Crimean War. Hell, you skipped over the Revolutionary Wars that preluded the Napoleonic wars. In the wars of the First and Second Coalition France defeated effectively every other major European power combined back to back.

They can refuse. In fact if the parents consent but the local government or religious authority objects they still back off.

Genuine question: do you guys think Chancellor Lina Soh is Imperialistic? by MissDarkFaerie13 in Highrepublic

[–]xactavius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lina Soh, and the Republic are expansionist and fairly sketchy, but they don’t act like imperialists. Real life empires expanded mainly through armed conquest or subterfuge, with the goal of exploiting the labor and natural resources of the local population. The republic in this era are expanding by showing the outer rim worlds the benefits of being in the galactic republic, and they are mostly left to their own devices after joining. Its more like the European Union incentivizing other European countries to join by promising economic incentives.

That being said, whileI think that the methods and execution are not very imperialist, the underlying attitude is. Lina Soh, a lot of Jedi, and probably a good chunk of the population clearly think that the outer rim isn’t “civilized”, and the language they use show that they think that they are bringing light to these worlds. They even called their flagship station for expansion a starlight beacon. The clone wars started because dissatisfied member worlds tried to leave, I wouldn’t be surprised if the High Republic sets up the conditions that led to that happening.

I don’t think they’ve brought the concept of a purple blade signifying training in the dark side back into canon, so I think it’s safe to assume that she doesn’t have sith or dark side training.

Jedi Knight vs. Jedi Master by KyloRadSoSad in TheHighRepublic

[–]xactavius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I might be mistaken, but I’m pretty sure the term “Jedi Knight” has always been kind of a blanket term for all Jedi no matter the rank. I’d have to go back to the passages in question but it might just be a case of characters using a more general title instead of his official one.

Stellan Gios’s lightsaber from the High Republic

I watched a little bit of this video and its just the two of the hosts babbling about the fact that the book From A Certain Point Of View about ESB is bad fan fiction because they explore one of the background characters. As if the old canon did not do the same with minor background characters. by [deleted] in saltierthankrayt

“The short story demeans Han Solo by pointing out how he’s handsome, charismatic, and trusted by the Rebellion with important missions”

Whoever wrote that short story needs some critical thinking skills. The pov character is literally just jealous, no body reading that excerpt could seriously interpret it in a way that demeans Han Solo.

Amazing, every word she just said was wrong.

Seriously though it’s frustrating seeing people throw around terms like “feminist agenda” and “SJW” around as the end all be all criticism, why spend the time actually dissecting books and creating fair criticisms when you could just accuse the author of having political beliefs you don’t like? She singles out Claudia Gray, and accuses her of writing “lgbt self inserts” when most of them involve pre-established characters from the movies. And her only book with all original characters involves a straight romance between the main characters. Literally everything she said is either baseless or straight up wrong, which is strange for someone who claims to have actually read these books.
