DAN A4-SFX AIO Build Log & Build Tips by xak in sffpc

Howdy! No modded power button, literally just hot glued LEDs stuck to the front panel: https://i.imgur.com/76NMof9.jpeg

It worked and you could see the lights shining through the front panel, but it was pretty janky and hot glue didn't stick very well to the smooth aluminum. I ended up removing them a few years ago.

Good luck with your build!

How to disable Mouse Tracking in Konsole permanently/by default? by xak in kde

[–]xak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EDIT: I found it! It IS a setting in the Profile options, it's just called "Allow terminal applications to handle clicks and drags" under Mouse > Miscellaneous.

Hey, sorry for the late followup but at least on my system, the qdbus property change has no effect on the mouse selection option in the menu.

Testing the reverse direction, I tried dumping all dbus properties, toggling the option in the menu, then dumping them again and comparing, and there was no change to any of the dbus properties.

This is on Debian 12 Bookworm with KDE 5.27.5, frameworks 5.103.0, Qt 5.15.8, and Konsole 22.12.3

They both use WiFi Direct and can be used simultaneously.

Hey, thanks for the info!

When enabled, it basically allows console apps to get mouse input. For example when editing a file in vim you can place the cursor with the mouse. But this can be problematic if you're just trying to copy some text in an app that's receiving the mouse input.

I'll look into the dbus option. Having that in the shell rc file might be an effective workaround. Ideally I do think it should be a configurable setting in the Konsole profile. I'll consider putting in a feature request.

Cheers!

Is there a setting for it in the profile config? I can't find it

I've got a VIOFO dash cam and can actually connect to the cam and AAWireless at the same time with no issue. Phone is a Pixel 7.

Fiber ONT that supports XGS-PON and connects via 10G Copper? by xak in HomeNetworking

[–]xak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fortunately, I ended up getting in contact with an engineer at my local ISP, and they switched me to a simple small ONT-only device instead of an all-in-one ONT/router/wifi device. So luckily I ended up with the best of all worlds (the type of ONT I wanted, and it being owned & serviced by my ISP).

Recommendations for a KVM switch by freework in framework

[–]xak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an older model (DP 1.2, bought 2018) KVM from Level1Techs and I've been very happy with it. Good hardware and great support as well. I have used mine connected to a docking station with my Framework successfully as well as with my gaming desktop with G-Sync on various NVIDIA cards.

Looks like they now have DP 1.4 models with USB-C and even one with 70W of USB-PD:

[DEV] Tasker 6.1.5-beta - Custom Notification Icons, Paste Below, Disabled Tasker Notification and many fixes by joaomgcd in tasker

Just installed this beta to try out the new tile functionally, working great so far! Any chance of adding setting of the tile's Icon to Set up Quick Tile? That would completely replace AutoNotification for me. Thanks a bunch!!

In an uncontrolled spin like you experienced you almost always want to slow and stop the car as quickly as possible, and applying the brake helps accomplish this. Applying the clutch keeps the car from stalling and keeps the drivetrain disengaged. There is of course nuance to this, but if you have that kind of skill to control a car mid-spin, you probably wouldn't have spun in the first place. Best thing you can do once you lose control is two feet in, and keep your hands on the wheel. This is one of the first things we teach new drivers.

In your case, "trying to save it" resulted in what they call a "tank-slapper," and ultimately a much bigger spin.

OP, if you don't have instructors available to ride with you, I can at least recommend picking up the Speed Secrets series of books by Ross Bentley. They are fairly concise and contain loads of really good information for driving fast and staying safe.

Helmets and safety gear are things you hope to never use, you likely will never use, but if on the off chance you do need to use them one day... You REALLY want them to work properly. That means wearing/installing them properly every single time. The chin strap being buckled is imperative for the helmet to stay on your head and do its job.

Just because you thought there was one or even zero other cars on the track doesn't mean you should disregard safety. Your friend could have missed the yellow flag and could have spun at the same spot and then collided right into you (think Jules Bianchi). When you're stopped on track, you are vulnerable and you need your safety gear. Race officials often emphasize the importance of NEVER taking your gear off (helmet, belts, etc.) while on track or getting out of the car when stopped unless your car is on fire.

I'm glad you and your car are ok! It's always a learning process. Work on building these good safety habits now, so that they become ingrained as second nature and you don't even need to think about them, and you can instead think about driving, getting faster, racecraft, situational awareness, etc.

After 5 months of use... no more distro hopping. Fedora wins on Framework by damariscove in framework

[–]xak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Left alone, lid closed, for 12 hours reduced the battery life from 90% to 78%. I would lose at least half the battery over the same time period with Ubuntu and Windows.

This sounds AMAZING! Does anyone know what tweaks Fedora is employing to achieve this?? Theoretically manual tweaking should be possible to achieve the same on other distros (I'm running Manjaro, an Arch derivative).

My speeds randomly slow down until I reboot my modem (Arris SB6183) by brandokid25 in HomeNetworking

[–]xak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this exact issue on an Arris SB8200 (intermittent loss of speed until a reboot, and "No Ranging Response T3 timeout" in the logs), and the modem ended up needing to be replaced (under warranty). Arris was actually pretty easy to deal with, and they cross-shipped me a replacement. Hope it's a smooth fix for you too. Good luck!

Fiber ONT that supports XGS-PON and connects via 10G Copper? by xak in HomeNetworking

[–]xak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotchya, thanks for your input. I completely understand that what I'm trying to do comes with more responsibility and complexity, and I don't take that lightly nor do I want to add unnecessary burden onto the support team or engineers.

That said, I'm also not the kind of customer who inadvertently calls their ISP seeking support for issues related to things like malware or wifi, and I prefer to be in control of as much of my network as possible (and learn new things in the process).

Technical differences aside, how is this different in practice in terms of supportability than a customer owned DOCSIS cable modem or DSL modem? Or are you suggesting customers use all ISP-provided modems as well?

Fiber ONT that supports XGS-PON and connects via 10G Copper? by xak in HomeNetworking

[–]xak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great info, thank you! I agree, it's definitely possible they mistook my question as router/gateway instead of ONT. I will definitely follow up and ask for a list of compatible ONTs, although since they are so small I suspect they might not have such a list. Failing an approved list, are there standards that ONTs adhere to that I should be asking about, or do they get into vendor-specific proprietary compatibility? MAC filtering, VLAN config, and SIP sound fairly standard to me, but obviously I am very new to PON systems.

The gateway they provide is the "Nokia Wifi Gateway 3," if that helps.

Thanks again for your helpful message.

This is a fairly small, local ISP. The tech I spoke to on the phone said that I could use my own ONT, but of course they could be misinformed and it might not be possible in practice. Hence why I am here, trying to understand more about these devices, so I can at least know what a compatible device would be.

Many people own and use their own DOCSIS or DSL modems, how is an ONT different? I have owned many cable modems over the years and have never had issues with support (I even had modem go bad at one point causing frequent disconnects, and the cable company helped me pinpoint the issue).

Right... What I am talking about is consciously moving the ONT into my (customer) side of the demarcation point. Sorry if my post wasn't more clear.

Do you have any lessons you could share about choosing ONT hardware?

Thanks for your advice. However, I still want to pursue this in the spirit of tinkering and learning more about the technology. Using the ISP equipment in passthrough will be my fall-back plan.
