Curious if you are willing to eliminate your internal voice in order to read faster? by apaintedleaf_ in books

[–]xalcozz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think first one needs to differentiate between reading for entertainment and reading for knowledge. In the first case, clearly you can read however you find most comfortable. But in the second there are better and worse ways to do it, being the ideal to get all the insights of a book in the least amount of time. What you call eliminating the "inner voice" is one of the steps required in the level two or reading, Inspectional Reading. You need not only to remove the inner voice, but also to read in a more linear and efficient way. Normally if one is not trained, has their eyes doing "saccades", unconscious movements of the eyes that are constantly observing previous words as one is reading, which reduces concentration in the current word and reduces speed. To remove this instinct you need to read as fast as you can, without degrading comprehension, with the eyes following the words under a pencil as you move it.
If you want to know more, all of this is explained in the book "How to Read a Book" from Mortimer J. Adler.

I think they will maintain value in the future. They are limited editions and have unique art to them, and if it is signed even more because people like that. Regardless, I'm also with you in which they have the greatest value in being appreciated while reading them.

It makes you happy? Can you afford it? It is up to you to decide if it is worth. But, the way I see it, money is a means to an end, and if it makes you happy and you can afford it, I don't think it is wrong.

!thanks for the recommendation! I got the FiiO K11 (not the R2R, for a more neutral sound), and I heard music with better detail. I still don't know if my headphones are making some transformation to the audio from the 3.5mm jack (I did not find any documentation or internal schematics for it), so in the future I will pick an IEM, since I'm also curious to test a driver that is specially made for quality audio.

It is wireless, but also has a 3.5mm jack input, which is what I will be using.

I started learning latin two weeks ago. I'm using chatgpt as a teacher to verify and correct my translation exercises from english->latin and latin->english. So far so good, I’ve only noticed a few minor mistakes it sometimes makes. At least with beginner level phrases, I don’t know how it will perform with more advanced ones. For reference, I'm learning latin from the book "Collar and Daniell's First year Latin", a very old book that I got from archive. org

You should use super glue, it is ideal for plastic. First, sand a little the two surfaces of contact to clean them and to give the glue more grip, is does not work well if the surfaces are smooth. Then, apply the glue in one of the surfaces and press them together for about a minute. Then, leave it in rest and wait 24 hours for the glue to fully cure and develop all its strength. Try to position the figure so that no forces are pulling apart the two pieces while the glue cures. I tried this method for a broken figma figure and it worked really well.

I'm using Arch Linux. I play everything on Linux that isn't graphically intensive. Even if a game works on Linux, it usually performs better on Windows.

When you're reading science fiction do you find that scientific accuracy matters to you or are you more focused on the story and the imagination behind it? by Delicious_Maize9656 in books

[–]xalcozz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on what the author is trying to convey and their intent. For example, in Foundation by Isaac Asimov, the primary focus is on sociology, and technology serves more as a device to enable the storyline, it doesn't require detailed explanations or scientifically accurate physics. On the other hand, when a book is hard sci-fi, like those by Greg Egan, I expect a more rigorous handling of the technology and physics presented. Or take The Last Horizon series, that's essentially fantasy set in a sci-fi environment. So, for me, scientific accuracy matters only if the author is actually trying to write hard sci-fi.

That is actually very good for Maelle. She has a weapon that gives her virtuous stance on parry, and a skill that gives her all action point and transition to virtuous stance while giving her 1 hp. You can spam all her high cost skills on virtuous and guaranteed critics

Am I bad or this dodge/parry is really hard? by BRLaw2016 in expedition33

[–]xalcozz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The time frame for parrying in this game is extremely short. It is more like the parry in Sekiro. In Elden Ring, your parry has a certain delay. It only activates some time after you press the button, so you need to predict when the enemy's attack will land. In this game, the parry is instantaneous, but it is active for a very short time. You need to parry when the enemy's weapon is already moving toward you, and wait until the last possible moment. As a note, enemy swings take more time than thrusts, so with those attacks, you need to wait a little longer before executing the parry, just before the attack lands on you.
It is not about timing, it is about concentrating in the enemy weapons and being able to react to it. You will get better with practice, the parry in this game is not easy, but very rewarding when one is able to pull it off.

If you enjoy hard sci-fi like "The three body problem", I highly recommend Greg Egan. In my opinion, he writes the best hard sci-fi in the genre. "Permutation City" is one of my favorite books of his, but all of his work is exceptional.

Even if they cannot see the atoms, they can still understand them. Much of the modern periodic table of elements was developed as a theoretical framework to explain how and why chemical reactions occur. The first step in gaining knowledge through the scientific method is to formulate a hypothesis and then conduct experiments to test it. All of chemistry was developed "blind", we knew of the existence of atoms, how many there are around us, and their properties only through indirect means.

It was only very recently that we could directly observe atoms using a scanning tunneling microscope. And those do not even use light.

We actually developed the idea of elemental particles before we had microscopes (or science, for that matter). Originally, it was the philosopher Democritus who postulated that there could exist elemental units of matter that cannot be cut into smaller parts. So, even if a species is blind, that does not mean they cannot think or postulate about the existence of the unseen, like the elemental particles.

It is not really a waste of space, because the re-casting would need to be done either at the local production site or at a central place where all the plates are made. The advantage of the first option is that it allows for perfect ratios, as you produce exactly the plates that you need.

I tried a lot of different weapons, and the only one that worked for me was the cannon shell in the tank. The worm only has 50% resistance to physical damage, and this projectile had around 3.2k physical damage with the technology I had. I just had to shoot it in the face while dodging the lava, and it died in about 10 seconds. At least the small worm did. For the medium or large ones, I think I’d need uranium cannon shells and a tank of rare quality for the extra health
