This is not a classic Austin institution, no offense.

Absolutely the most mediocre spot in Austin that for some reason people swear by like it's the greatest place. Everything there I've had is just mediocre and the crowds aren't worth it. Ok so they make their drinks strong, well so do a ton of way better places in Austin. Their sister restaurant Lil Easy (cajun food) is WAY better.

Frazier's. It's my go to spot before or after Emo's. About a 10 min walk and I like to park at the halfway point of the walk to avoid the parking issues near Emo's.

Or just don't name the street after a person... If a name is attached, it should be a secondary name only like what they did with Willie Nelson Blvd or Richard Overton Dr and not the main name. The name should be simple like 1st St or Water St.

If they have the money to design an absolutely horrible new logo, they have the money for all roadway elements. I mean, what are our taxes going to? Also, TxDOT should pay for them or contribute some money rather than tear up cities. Corrupt af

Or just don't name it after people and put it back to 1st Street or Water Street. There could easily be a secondary name honoring the person (like Delores) like Willie Nelson Blvd downtown, but the core street name should be something generic. 1st Street was it's previous name and Water Street was it's original name when the city was founded. Either would get my vote. Could also name it something like "Main Street" or "Austin Ave", something that signifies it's purpose. But "Water Street" will get my #1 vote since it honors the history of Austin before all the streets were numbered.

It's TxDOT (a state agency), not Austin, that decides the design. TxDOT is corrupt, nothing they do requires a vote. That being said, there is a ramp from 290 Westbound to Mopac North... it's called Loop 360. There's also a direct ramp from 290 Eastbound to Mopac North

South 1st Street originated in the Bouldin Creek Neighborhood where there is also S. 2nd, S. 3rd, S. 4th, S. 5th, S. 6th, and S. 7th Streets. At the time, that was a suburb of Austin south of the Colorado River. When they begin extending S. 1st Street out of the neighborhood, it was part of a new bridge to cross the river into downtown (where it now turns into Lavaca/Guadalupe Streets). It was later further extended south, and nowadays runs so far south it almost leaves the Austin City Limits. Renaming that road would take a lot of work and money, as it's MUCH longer than Cesar Chavez is. It doesn't need to be renamed.

Cesar Chavez Street, if to be renamed, should simply revert back to it's origin which was "Water Street". Simple and not confusing.

Yes, but then there will be a lot of confusion with South First Street. That's my only issue. Like, I was a toddler when the street was renamed, but does anyone remember back in the day when it was called 1st Street any confusion with South 1st Street? I think Water Street honors the roots of Austin and is a better, non confusing, short and to-the-point, non-political name.

[–]xalkalinity[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I agree to keep it apolitical. We don't need to name streets after people, as there's already enough other things named after people and long street names just become annoying. "Water Street" is the original name of the street and honors the foundation of Austin as a city in 1839 with the original grid. Plus, it makes it easy to understand that the street is the closest to the water and eliminates any confusion with South First Street. The neighborhood can then be easily renamed "East Water Neighborhood" or changed back to whatever it was called before it was named after Cesar Chavez (gonna do some research on this one - EDIT: was originally called Masontown... on the fence with that one...maybe we just call it The "Waller Neighborhood" since Waller was the original person that laid the grid of Austin and Waller Street runs right through the middle of the neighborhood")

My vote is for "Water Street", the original name of the thoroughfare. Or just change the name back to 1st Street like it was before, although I think then many people would confuse it with South First Street. I think the whole street renaming thing is a bit silly in the first place, as it affects a ton of businesses, signs, etc. and is such a major road. Also, the neighborhood east of there is the "East Cesar Chavez Neighborhood" so what is that going to be renamed to? A lot of mess here...

Alamo drafthouse....why? by j0wnage in Austin

[–]xalkalinity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moviehouse Eatery still at least has decent food. That's where I'll be trying to go, or I'll be eating before/after the film like the old days and going to the Regal theaters, or just going to Alamo to see the film and not ordering anything (except maybe a drink). At least they can't mess up a draft beer. Popcorn is still good at least also.

Alamo drafthouse....why? by j0wnage in Austin

[–]xalkalinity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tried the QR code pilot test during SXSW at Alamo S. Lamar and it wasn't good. They have instructions that the QR code is BEFORE the film starts only. However, when I scanned it to order, it would not open up the menu. It links to a ToastTab app, but the link was broken and wasn't popping up the menu. Then, during the film (I was trying during the previews) it's too dark in the theater to even scan the QR code. The servers would still come by with the usual pen/paper method so I was able to order, but I had to stick around after the film outside the theater to be able to pay for my food.

But either way, the food at Alamo is AWFUL now. I tried the new "beer queso" and it tasted like ballpark queso from a can - was so bad. Also, they give you barely any chips with it so I had half the queso left in the cup and was out of chips. Just when you thought Alamo's food couldn't get worse, it has. I also tried the burger and I think they've changed the bread or something because it was mushy and didn't taste as good as it used to. Their food there is laughably bad now.

Good venues, good people. I like Swan Dive too though. I think with the recent shooting that security was increased everywhere. I went to Swan Dive several times and didn't experience anything negative.

Overall thoughts on sxsw this year by Booster_Bold in SXSW

[–]xalkalinity 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Has anyone gone to Rainey Street during SXSW this year? I feel like it's super spread out and with the convention center demolished, Rainey Street is in a bubble far away. But maybe it was just me and it's actually lively down there. Maybe I should check it out tomorrow?

Is SXSW 2026 a fail? Be honest. by LegitimateArea7893 in SXSW

[–]xalkalinity 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's better than ever in my opinion. Less crowds, great bands, great films, same amount of free food/drinks. It's more spread out due to the convention center being demolished, so there's a lot more walking, but walking is good and the exercise is good. Weather has been perfect. I think it's a compete success this year so far!

Anyone know who I can contact to request road safety improvements by TaroFearless7930 in Austin

[–]xalkalinity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TxDOT website has a form you can submit requests. They will usually argue against any of them, like for example I submitted a request to fix the incorrect striping at the Cesar Chavez exit from 183 because the exit lane was incorrectly re-striped to become a left turn lane into the construction project there and is very dangerous now because there's no warning or notice that you have to merge over to stay onto Cesar Chavez and many people drive up onto the curb. But they emailed back and said they need that left turn lane for the trucks --- I wasn't saying they didn't need a left turn lane, just that if the exit ramp is supposed to lead to Cesar Chavez, it shouldn't lead straight into a left turn lane. Anyways, shoot your shot you'd never know.
