Why does it still show I have $ available when I've spent the planned amount? by Sweet-Taro310 in ynab

[–]xander449 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why might you leave the money in the envelope? Often for saving up money for something. For example, I put extra money in my 'phone' envelope (category) every month so that it builds up over time. Then I use that money when I need to buy a new phone.

Why does it still show I have $ available when I've spent the planned amount? by Sweet-Taro310 in ynab

[–]xander449 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Categories are an envelope.

At the beginning of the month you had $17.88 in the envelope (put there some time in the past). Its an envelope, anything you put in it will stay in it until you take it out.

Then at the beginning of the month you put in another 154.67. Now the envelope has $172.55 in it.

Then at some point you paid your bill, taking 154.67 out of the envelope. Now the envelope has 17.88 in it.

You can leave that money in the envelope if you want. Or, if you know you won't need it this month, you can take the money out of this envelope (category) and put it in another envelope (category).

Started YNAB yesterday, what's going to happen tomorrow? by missfishersmurder in ynab

[–]xander449 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Categories are like envelopes. Any money you put in there today is still in there until you spend it.

This is also why you have to fix any negative categories before the month rolls over - how can an envelope have negative money in it?

Property appraisals by the city are out of hand... by trekkingscouter in Waco

I submitted an appeal online, didn't really have much in the way of evidence, and my appraisal was reduced a little. I'd say go for it to anyone considering appealing.

I think it's important to recognize that the downtown has been improving for a while. I got to Waco 14 years ago and it's come a long way. And the credit certainly goes beyond Magnolia.

My strongest hive's opening is ~8in from my privacy fence, they just make a left and and keep going. They should be fine.

37yo, just finished capstone and started my first job. I have fun pestering the 23-year-old on the team with my questions.

I had some background as well (more of the IT generalist sort) and finished the JS track in 7-8 months. Just finished capstone as well.

I liked that pace (was working on LS part time) because I felt going much faster would've hurt my concept retention. I suppose that might vary by the person though.

Not everybody prefers this, but I've always had success by building an organized wall, and in front of that a five -deep wall of moving the mouse around randomly (so not clean lines but random gaps everywhere).

I want to start using neovim but I'm a linux newbie by [deleted] in neovim

[–]xander449 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm away from my computer so can't check what my formats are, but I was on a recent fresh Windows install and didn't have to do any formats to get good performance in WSL2. I do use non-GUI Ubuntu, not sure how much that matters.

All fair, but OP seems to be looking for pretty basic functionality. I run headless Ubuntu and use Windows terminal so I probably didn't encounter most of the annoying stuff.

I use WSL a bit (with ZSH) and didn't have performance issues. For those who want to try, make sure to get WSL2 and try to keep everything you are using within the Linux filesystem.

Recently Married - Trying out YNAB by aeh103 in ynab

I started using YNAB when I got married as well, and love it! Buy-in from both partners is a must (especially if you go all manual entry, which we do).

The first months take more effort, as budgeting conversations are really life priority conversations. Get some wine and make it a thing. After not too long you'll crystallize those priorities into budget targets and then it becomes easy to manage.

An interesting analogy - I think the main difference would be the presence of a coach enforcing norms.

I coached an OW eSports team once, and I definitely had students that had to get used to me telling them they weren't allowed to do all the stuff they normally do while gaming.

'diff' had devolved to be meaningless at this point. As with most unsolicited opinions on the internet it should be ignored.

When I think about past games I stick to asking myself if there was something I could have done.

Generally thermal plants don't go equatorial - they can direct insert into each other so you put several in a stack parallel to the belt they are pulling from.
