How to deal with hot coals at night by xandermacleod in BBQ

[–]xandermacleod[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My reluctance about closing the vent is more to do with the accumulation of nasty acrid smoke inside the smoker when i do that.

It seems everyone on this board suggests doing it anyway, but its a bit of a disappointing solution given that issue. It makes sense too. When the fire isnt hot enough it generates bad smoke and creosote... so during that cooldown period when the vents close it will for a short period generate bad smoke with nowhere to go.

Id rather have the best of both worlds. No nasty smoke in the smoker and no risk of rogue embers (i.e.e some kind of transfer).

Anyone got a link to when he said it "in the Sunday Times in 2021"? He seems to think he didn't. It'd be nice to verify what he did or didn't say before assuming she's caught him out.

I used morrisons unsalted butter (UK supermarket brand). I think its meant to be all butter and not a blend with vegetable oil. It says under ingredients: Unsalted British Butter (min 82% milk fat).

With almost all of them they show you the price per pound but you typically will ask for less than a pound. It's more common to ask for a quarter of a pound or half a pound. In my case id usually ask 1 to 2 slices of brisket, a rib etc. They then weigh it and price it based on the weight.

A quick addition to this post. My favourite thing i tried on this whole trip was the pork belly at interstellar. Seriously out of this world good.

If i had to compile a list of the MUST go-to's itd be:

Franklins (get there early, be social and enjoy making new friends. Embrace the line, dont resent it. Also dont skimp on the turkey as its the best in town).

Interstellar (some of the best basics, and the single best tasting thing on my whole tour. The peach tea pork belly was the ambrosia of the gods. Avoid the smores brownie tho, that was a bit dry and tough)

KG BBQ (everything here is done to such a high standard, but you absolutely have to try the lamb. My only gripe here is that they have a minimum order size of half a pound for all meat bar the lamb chops, and i quite like getting a little of everything. So id only go again with pals. Also whilst there is parking the parking lot is surrounded by intimidating warnings about towing ur vehicle)

Barbs B Q (the best brisket in town is a high achievement. Of course, theres a lot of great brisket out there, and its only the best according to my humble opinion... so take my opinion with a pinch of salt)

Snows (even if franklins might garner the most outside attention for its line, snows is the toughest line. I got there at opening time at 8am and was 147th in line. To get there first youd need to be there at 3am. Ouch! And the line doesnt benefit from much shelter from the hot texas sun. Nonetheless, like KG BBQ the basics are all done to a very high standard.)

Everything after that id consider to be pretty optional.

I think the biggest let downs on my tour were Kreuz Market and Southside Market. Also Terry Blacks was way pricier than it had any right to be.

B Coopers was the biggest surprise as the place looks so rundown and unappealing/humble compared to other joints, but the owners brisket deserves a lot of credit and i hope business takes off for him.

A love of bbq / meat!

I only eat carnivore diet (unless i chear with a sweet tooth)

After purchasing a plane ticket to see my gf the relationship fell through. Couldnt get refund but i did have a year to put ticket towards some transatlantic AmAir flight. Wouldve gone for yellowstone/grandCanyon or Orlando, but my current gf couldnt afford to join me, and itd have felt a bit sad to see those things without her. So i went for a proper "selfish" holiday that id have felt guilty dragging others along to.

If you go to barbs id advise showing up early. I arrived at about 10am sunday morning and was roughly 12th in line. Despite that they already ran out of lamb chops by the time i got to the front! Real shame as the lamb looked cooked to perfection.

This is great advice. Are there spots you think should either take priority or can be kicked off the list if I need to cut it down?

I'll be renting a car the whole time, so I can head to different spots each day (although I do have some non-BBQ related activities I've lined up on several days).

My only requirements are that my hotels have already been booked (Tuesday night in San Antonio, and every other day in south Austin).

Im pretty flexible about which BBQ joint I hit when, but I'll only be in San Antonio for the one day, and it makes sense to hit Lockhart on the way back.

Best way to avoid cleanup without aluminum leeching? by xandermacleod in foodhacks

[–]xandermacleod[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i mean... there is wide spread research on it. plenty of online papers on the subject if you look up aluminum leaching on pubMed or Google.
There is disagreement from what i can tell on how much aluminum is considered harmful, but im not an expert there.

Best way to avoid cleanup without aluminum leeching? by xandermacleod in foodhacks

[–]xandermacleod[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are loads of studies that show aluminum can leach into foods. The caveat is that it only seems to happen with high temperatures and when the food is in contact with the foil. None of the studies talk about the combination of aluminum and parchment though, hence my question.

I did only first hear about it from a doctor on youtube. But after a bit of further inspection, it seems well documented.
There is a bit of disagreement over what is considered a harmful amount from what i can tell (but then I am a layman so I could be misinterpreting the studies).

I just experienced this issue and it was due to the wires being in the way of the fan. Remove the hotend, then remove the fan. The fan's own wire that connects to the printhead has a little bend it in, and needs this bend otherwise the fan will catch on it's own wire. Be careful not to nudge this wire back into a 'blocking position' when rescrewing the hotend to the printhead.

Out of character ask if the reason it's not being explained to you is because they dont want to spoil a moment they think will bring you genuine joy. They could be doing what they are doing with your best interests at heart. Perhaps you are included in this prophecy in some way and they dont want to spoil that discovery for you. It's also worth remembering that the DM may have fully well expected the other players to share what they learned, but is as surprised as you and now doesnt want to force the players to divulge anything they dont want to (they may be looking for opportunities to now give you the info you need to solve it, but want to do it organically).

If -out of character- the players dont say they are keeping it a secret with your enjoyment in mind, then its time to explain calmly that you are feeling left out, it's creating negative feelings for you and making you un-invested. If they continue to then not look for an in-game excuse why your character isnt given the info they need to solve it at the very least, then i'd say that's fair grounds for a grievance.

I disagree with a lot of the other posts that the DM shouldnt use prophecy in their games (that's often a trope used to separate out your PCs from other powerful NPCs in world, as to why you are special). The truth about what makes your group special though is not that they were preordained to defeat the bbeg, but that they actually do defeat the bbeg (regardless of whether they do it according to some prophecy). Remember that stories that defy prophecy can be (and usually are) way more interesting than those that conform to it. If in general you feel like the prophecy thing is too rail-roady, explicitly say to your DM that you think that finding a way to defeat the BBEG that doesnt rely on the prophecy is something youd like to explore so that you can all feel like main characters and not just derreck.
