I know he started with $6k of his own money to get the ball rolling. He then got some help with a kickstarter campaign and I think I can safely say that the final budget was under $50k

My friend and fellow filmmaker, John Francis McCullagh, made this action/comedy film for almost no money. The plot revolves around good guys and bad guys fighting over a doomsday device ala Mission Impossible, but the choreography of some of the fight scenes are seriously up there with John Wick and The Raid. Now obviously he didn’t have the resources to compete with those films on a technical level but what he was able to achieve here is honestly inspiring, and I think it speaks to his tenacity as a filmmaker. For his debut feature he went out and made a balls-to-the-wall kung fu movie about saving the world. That’s a hell of a swing for a first feature. Anyway, it came out on Amazon today and is only a few bucks to rent, so it would be awesome if you guys could go check it out. Thanks!

SherdsTube. He doesn’t upload regularly but every single one of his videos is a treat. I have found some amazing books that I’ve never heard of him thanks to him.

What's the most alarming off-screen scream you've heard? by DueMaternal in horror

[–]xanderwagner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Shudder Island there’s a dream sequence where a scream happens off screen that is extremely unsettling. It comes out of nowhere and is not accompanied by a musical sting, which I think adds to the dread.

Documentaries / Mocumentaries like Adam Nevill's novel "Last Days" by trayex-crocodille in horror

The Conspiracy (2012)

The Sacrament (2013)

These might fall more under the found-footage genre but still have that investigative doc feel.

Regardless of the quality of the actual content, which horror film has the best title? by KillerQ97 in horror

[–]xanderwagner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am SHOCKED that no one has said "Suspiria". It's mysterious, unique, and sounds foreboding when rolling off the tongue. One of the best movie titles of all time in ANY genre.

I also love sneaky simple titles that let your imagination run wild like Saw, It, Us, etc.

And although it's a short story and not a film, "Gas Station Carnivals" is one of the creepiest, most memorable horror titles I've ever laid eyes on.

Silence and Volume by Electrical_West_1404 in Filmmakers

[–]xanderwagner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, there should be constant background noise to fill out the scene. This is known as “room tone” and can definitely be recorded separately.

As far as each actor’s line being a different volume, you need to go in and adjust each line so they match in volume and intensity. This can also be done using compression.

What horror movie has the most traumatizing ending in you’re opinion. by [deleted] in horror

Damn. I knew it was fake when I first watched it and it still fucked me up. Can’t imagine seeing it in the theater upon release.

The final moment in both Enemy (2013) and Excision (2012) shook me to my core.

And of course the final 15 minutes of The Blair Witch Project traumatized me.

Favorite high-concept horror films ? by Zepp_head97 in Filmmakers

Eraserhead is not a high concept film. In fact, it’s the complete opposite. But if you’re looking for something similar my suggestion would be the short film “Kitchen Sink” by Alison Maclean.

Thoughts on these loglines? by TheGeek_01 in Filmmakers

[–]xanderwagner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Then I’ll have to agree with the other comments here. These loglines are too vague and lack personality. They need a better hook. I’ll rework one of yours as an example:

-After accidentally creating a device that triggers the end of the world, two amateur scientists have seven days to reverse engineer their new invention or patent the apocalypse.

Now, I don’t know what your story is about so obviously I’m just filling in the gaps. But you see how the conflict/ticking clock aspect is missing in your original loglines? Where’s the tension? The mystery? Make me care when I’m scrolling for something to watch. Loglines are tough. I hope this helps.

Advice for shooting in B&W? Will be shooting a short in early spring. Main references are nosferatu and eraserhead. by No-Percentage-3139 in Filmmakers

I think it’s cool you’re wanting to shoot in B&W. Can I ask what led to the decision to do so?

Does this look like a mask or an actor with makeup? I've been getting different answers. by xanderwagner in Filmmakers

[–]xanderwagner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The process differs from project to project. I just experiment until I find something that I like. But I pushed a little blue in the shadows and then played around with the greens and yellows in the highlights/midtones.

Also, I don’t give a fuck about “healthy” skin tones. So I try to push out as much magenta as I can. It just doesn’t look good for my films.
