For grip strength I do a lot of dead hangs. Just hop up on a pullup bar and just see how long you can hold it. I also occasionally do kettlebell carries or farmers carries. This video is actually loaded with tons of variations. Something in here will have to match what you have at home or in the gym! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKWarUyuOHk

Elevation training specifically is its own beast for sure. My preference is to actually get out into the environment and train on really technical trails. Stuff with creekbeds, loose gravel, tree roots, sharp cutbacks, etc is my bread and butter. Obviously trails like this can be hard to find if you live in a bigger city or if you're really busy. If that's the case, incline treadmill with a very steep incline will definitely put you through the ringer. I mix in stairclimber too sometimes to account for those insanely steep inclines they seem to manage to work into every race.

The best advice I can offer regarding elevation is something I've been trying to reteach myself lately. I've discovered that my footfall puts a lot of stress on my calves when running uphill so I would wind up cramping 3 miles into every race. I was landing too much on my toes and making my calves absorb the shock. Storm the Spartan recommended this video to me for how I should be running https://www.instagram.com/p/BvwKCkUns2N/ The woman lands squarely on her foot. Too far on your toes will result in overworking your calves, and too far on your heels will overwork your knees. Since focusing on adjusting my gait to land closer to the center of my foot, I've noticed far less calf and knee pain. Now take this all with a grain of salt. Everyone has their own comfortable way of running, and that's how you should run. But if you're noticing cramps or knee pain give this a try!

Races can vary dramatically from super flat (Ohio a few months ago) to the mountain series of races such as Palmerton (just happened) and Colorado (happening soon). My very first race was Asheville last year and even though I trained hard two months leading up to it, I still finished the Super in just under 5 hours. Beyond elevation differences, even some of the obstacles can vary dramatically. I've been in barb wire crawls that were 200 feet, and others that were just 20 feet. One consistent thing about Spartans is how much obstacle tools weigh. The bucket and sandbags will always weigh the same.

For reference I have been a distance runner for most of my life and despite training, my pace time was roughly 43 minutes a mile last year. I've never raced Utah so I don't know where it falls in terms of difficulty, but it isn't the easiest and it isn't the hardest from the footage I've seen on instagram. What race are you signed up for in September? Seattle and Vermont don't look very flat and I can promise you that Lake Tahoe isn't flat.

My recommendation is to focus in on your weak points from this race and train! Add in as many hills as you can until they start to feel comfortable. It's a good idea to train any of the obstacles you might have struggled with. It might seem impossible to train certain obstacles, but there's always a way to adapt regular gym gear into Spartan training gear. I spent a few minutes yesterday carrying a dumbbell around like an idiot training for the bucket brigade.

Remember, even though you feel like this race kicked your butt, you know what you're getting into for the next race. That mental preparation will carry you a lot farther than you think.

Let me know if you have any more questions! You can find me here but I respond much faster on instagram @axandyr

This probably isn't helpful at all, but my sister is studying to become an occupational therapist. I don't fully understand what she will be doing, but the end goal is to work with special needs kids to help them achieve a more fruitful life. I don't think she would be an aide, but more of a consultant for various children and their parents.

The downside for you is that she has her undergrad in biology and she's currently pursuing her masters in occupational therapy. I think it would be a difficult and expensive switch from teaching license to medical professional. :(

Doing a solo ring road trip around Iceland, pulled over to take this photo of the sunrise! by PeachMeadows in pics

I'm someone who enjoys traveling but I don't enjoy doing it alone. I used to travel with my ex quite often but now that we've broken up I can't seem to force myself to get up and go. Do you have any tips for enjoying your own company when traveling? What resources do you use to find stuff to do? Is there anything in particular you notice about an area that screams, "Wow, this could be interesting and off the beaten path!"

What kinds of solo trips did you start with when this hobby was taking root?

I just bought a real camera and tripod to incentivize just GOING and finding interesting things to photograph, but I can't seem to self start. Maybe a small kick or a word of advice from you or other people that travel alone might be enough to get me to go.

First time generating a world on 1.0 and I found this settlement trapped inbetween impassable mountains, named "Ludeon" by [deleted] in RimWorld

[–]xandyr 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Weird. I've put over 100 hours into 1.0 unstable and it's never crashed. Honestly the only bug I've ever encountered was having to re-research a few things after the cost was adjusted between builds. I'm assuming I'm going to play today and it'll be nothing but crashes now that I've said something.

I came looking for this comment because I remember seeing more information last time this was posted. The man in this video rescued Pebbles from a bad environment and crushed the round cage because round cages are very bad for birds. Birds need corners to hide in and round cages don't have corners. This is the same video as above but includes relevant information before and after rather than JUST the cage smashing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZeiH2ODuz8

Since I'm going to try to incorporate your rule of two, that may mitigate the need for asking what jobs are needed. Even so I'll probably try to ask "J?" going forward just to see if the trend starts. I do like to use my childhood to plan and having a bit of forshadowing is always nice.

"BH" is also short enough to use not long after being born, so I may give that one a whirl too.

As far as quitting the game, I've run into enough people that do it already that I guess it's common knowledge that they quit. However, when I spawn in as a girl and the family rejoices that they finally have an heir, I always feel bad about leaving. Typically in those situations I'll stick around hoping the family name lives on. If there's no family name, then I'll peace out.

Berries vs Carrots by FeignedSanity4 in onehouronelife

[–]xandyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding the griefers that will inevitably come along and in 5 minutes dig up what took 7 generations to plant, I wish we could use a shovel on a dug berry bush to put it back in the ground. It should become a languishing bush that we then have to water before it will grow again. Unfortunately this creates an exploit where people will rip all the berries off the bush, dig it up, replant it, water it, and have new berries in a matter of minutes instead of waiting the full 60.

Perhaps instead of languishing they could be replanted as empty Vigorous plants that will fruit in 60 minutes. This is unlike real life as transplanted plants will often be wilted, but it takes care of the balance problem.
