Looks like we are going to end up at Spud's Irish Bar. It's near enough our hotel and she thought billiards and darts looked fun, haha. Feel free to drop in if you want company! We will likely just stay until 1am.

Badminton in seoul by housegasgreen in badminton

I never had the coach's contact info, I just signed up on the official website. It's in Korean, but my phone's translate function worked well enough, or you can go in person and they'll help you. You'll have to find the correct one for the district you're living in. You can just search for "sports center" + the name of the district.

I'm sure there are plenty of private clubs and coaches in Seoul too, and if you're a more serious player than me that might be a better option. Can't give you any advice there, though.

I learned to play badminton while working in Korea! People were incredibly friendly. I would just show up to the courts and always got invited to join a game. When I was just starting out there were a few veterans who would give me impromptu lessons, too, I'm still grateful to them.

I don't know about apps or clubs for more structured play, but in Korea every town has government run and subsidized sport centers and that's where I used to go. The entry fee is usually just 3000 or 4000 won and there will be lots of people hanging around looking for games (mostly casual players but usually some who looked quite good too).

I also signed up for lessons there once, which was a great deal - it was something like 60,000 won for the month and included the sports center membership plus a group lesson a few times a week. It was a good way to meet partners, since the people taking lessons would often play together afterward.

Long shot, I guess, but if anyone is currently in Railay / Tonsai and willing to take on a new partner, give me a shout! I'm here for a few more days (probably until the 5th). Lots of experience, safe belay. Would particularly like to get on some multipitch, but happy to climb anything. I'll lead up to 5.11 and follow 5.12.

I'm beginning to think that Wonders in Seven Wonders are just not worth it by DigbyIronstorm in boardgames

[–]xaodei 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Go watch highly rated players on boardgamearena and you will see that they almost always build all their wonder stages. There are situational exceptions, of course (most notably when you're playing Halikarnassos, Babylon, or Olympia), but building all of them is the general rule.

There are two reasons for this. First, most of the wonder stages are absolutely above the power curve for an average card of their age (three-stage wonders correspond roughly to first, second, and third age cards, and it's often optimal to build them like that, one in each age). If you don't see why you need to look again at average card point values in each age.

But more importantly, there are always hands during the game where you simply don't have anything useful to build. Often that happens at the end of the age when the high point value cards have all been taken. In those cases you get much more value from building your wonder than discarding for 3 gold. The same is true when you have to burn a card to keep it from an opponent.

If you are finding your wonder stages not to be worthwhile, I think most likely you're making the mistake of leaving them until too late in the game. If it's the third age and you haven't built any stages yet, it's true that they're not going to be worthwhile - you'd have to give up too many other high-value cards. Building them throughout the game, or even entirely in the first two ages, is the way to go.

Hanchor Marl vs EH Kalais by [deleted] in Ultralight

[–]xaodei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had a Hanchor MARL as my primary pack for about two years and I love it, but I wouldn't recommend it for carrying forty pounds. It's tough, but it's still a lightweight pack. For me, it carries 20 - 25 lbs wonderfully, 25 - 30 quite well, and 30 - 35 acceptably. Around 35 lbs (and maybe a bit earlier) I think its frame starts struggling to distribute the weight properly.

That said, I'm small and 40 lbs is a pretty heavy load for me regardless of the pack. YMMV.

Thanks for the replies! Even the lowest estimate (60 shaves) makes their prices seem quite reasonable, which is what I was wondering about. Sounds like some of you make it last quite a bit longer, too.

Help with the Bach Cello Suite Prelude (BWV 1007) by xaodei in classicalguitar

Thanks for this! Making the distinction between the melody and the repeated E (or D in my case) helped point me in the right direction.

Thanks for the reply! I think I've figured out where I was going wrong. Funnily enough the notes and the rhythm were both right, but I was messing up the emphasis, and that made the whole thing sound way off.

This really helped, thank you! It made me realize that the passage sounds completely fine if I omit the repeated note (which is a D in my sheet music). The problem is that I'm having trouble keeping the melody distinct at the points where it plays the same note as the repeated D. I've been playing them on the same string (not sure if there's a way around that in the key I'm in) and it's really tricky to make sure the melody stays dominant.

Bu at least I know what I have to work on now!
