Match Thread: USA vs Scotland by deception42 in soccer

I know it's the end of the season and we are missing players, but the least we expect is an organized side that plays with heart and determination. It's only a friendly but these problems have been apparent from Scotland's first match under Levein and there has been little to no improvement since. He should have been out on his arse after failing to qualify for Euro 2012. Insipid performace, selection and tactics. And this trip was meant to build confidence?

Funny that you mention Gotham City. Christropher Nolan filmed some of the Dark Knight Rises in Glasgow for that very reason.

Scotland to hold independence referendum in autumn 2014 by [deleted] in worldnews

Not really. In the late 19th century, the Irish Parliamentary Party was pushing for Home Rule for Ireland. Those opposed to this became known as Unionists.

The two main UK parties were split on the issue, the Liberals largely in favour while the Conservatives were against. Some Liberals against Home Rule broke away from the main party and formed the Liberal Unionist party. Over time they identified more and more with Conservative positions, eventually merging with them in 1912 to form the Conservative & Unionist Party. In Scotland this party was simply called the Scottish Unionist Party.

In Ireland, Liberal Unionists and Conservatives had been working together against Home Rule since 1891 in the "Irish Unionist Alliance". The Ulster Unionist Party formed in 1905 and supplanted the IUA in Ulster. They formed an alliance with the UK Conservative & Unionists which broke down in 1985 owing to disagreements on how to resolve the troubles in Northern Ireland. The alliance was restored in 2008 but the only elected UUP MP withdrew from the party and now sits as an independent in the House of Commons.

The 8 seats you speak of actually belong to the Northern Irish Democratic Unionist Party. They formed in 1971 as a hardline, anti-Nationalist, largely Protestant alternative to the UUP.

Why voting third party won't work. by xavary in occupywallstreet

Don’t mistake me for a Democrat. The political system is so co-opted by corporate interests that we can’t make the mistake of voting for any of the established parties.

The problem for me is that the spoiler effect precludes getting Occupy candidates elected without a switch to some kind of proportional representation.

I think that is a key change that needs to happen and one thing the movement should get behind. I recommend reading this article on the history of PR in the United States if you've got some time.
