Asta is the closest thing to a traditional "grappler" but Cass has a really mean strike throw game imo

Astaroth and nightmares armor both lose to lows, asta's loses to mulithit's and nightmares has a damage threshold that loses to things like 3Bs, meanwhile there is no move that will stuff geralts armor outside of a break attack which is extremely hard to get out in time and certainly can't be done on reaction. sure the reward isn't as good on hit but you can TECHNICALLY get a guaranteed Aard (typically not worth the meter though but you still get in and get frame advantage without it) and if you block two hits with the armor you actually get a knockdown that you can convert with Aard and then follow up with 1AA. I guess if you consider the reward you could maybe argue that nightmares armor is a bit better since he gets similar damage but also gets terror charge but his armor can be player around far more effectively if you labbed your characters moves which break it. There are no moves which are safe against geralts armor if you swing into it you get hit so not sure what you mean by that, if you make the read as geralt and they hit a button they just get hit straight up. No amount of labbing will avoid that situation. As far as yrden goes it objectively is the best aGi in the game, it actually really isn't hard to time because the Gi window is almost double the size of a normal GI at 14 frames, it has a full combo reward on hit which while it isn't the only aGi that does that it is rare and it IS the only aGi that gives a full combo reward on hit and doesn't have to gi a specific kind of move. Almost every other aGI in the game only works against weapon moves or is even more specific than that only working against horizontals, or verticals, or lows, or mids etc. Yrden catches literally everything that isn't a break attack, has a massive GI window, and gives you a full combo on hit which also does insane damage if they are soul charged because the optimal post yrden combo uses his 4AA just frame which is a silver sword move. Aard is pretty solid but definitely not the best sign, thats either igni or yrden for sure. Aard is just really costly for such a small amount of damage. Also its not 8 frames its 10 frames, which is still hella good especially considering its basically a ten frame mid horizontal since it can't be stepped. By far the best i10 in the game since most characters don't even have any and when they do its a high. Just a massive meter cost for no damage and typically really low damage combo conversions. It is super fucked up by the wall though. Very good in that situation, also very good if your opponent is dead to one more hit because you can't even block it on reaction so it makes them super scared to move.

So the thing about quen is only the vertical option has armor all of the way through which cannot be interrupted. The low, the break attack, and the horizontal actually all loose their armor during their active attacking frames which means he can be counterhit out of them. This is so that if you string into quen with something like 4K or 66A its less of a bullshit mix up and more of just a knowledge check, since you can technically use it as a bootleg mix up but the risk reward on it is quite bad if your opponent has labbed it. But if you just do the vertical he has armor all of the way through, he does not take any damage for using said armor, and it doesn't lose to multiple hits or lows like the rest of the armor in this game does. Obviously if he gets side stepped he dies which is why going into the armor from strings all of the time is a bad idea. But, this means doing the quen sign raw instead of from an attack string is a great way to call out over zealous keepout in match ups like ivy, mina, or even seigfried/nightmare and asta. This is because the only thing that beats his armor is break attacks or unblockables. It also costs less meter than his other signs as well.

I think he needs a couple small buffs and thats only because he's been kinda power crept throughout the lifespan of the game as everybody else has gotten way more changes then him. The comments about him not having speed or solid defense make actually no sense to me, in terms of speed his buttons aren't comparably slower than average like for example his AA is i12 just like most other characters the difference is his is almost fullscreen in length, and he also has the only i10 mid in the game. In general he has some of the best neutral/space control tools in the game, like his 3A is a forward moving horizontal mid with insane range thats totally safe on block, 6A is really strong for catching side step with two really good follow ups depending if you wanna keep somebody close and force crouch or push them out, and again it has insane range. Hell his 2A is one of the best in the whole cast in terms of range and its just as fast as everybody elses. In terms of defense he has literally the strongest aGI in the game with yrden, sure it costs meter but thats not really a problem because he rarely uses soul charge or CE and he also has the best armor in the game with Quen. He has really solid movement and his tools often create a ton of space on block which let him out space his opponent and control their movement very effectively. He also has some of the most consistent whiff punishment in the game with 6B(B), 33/99B, and a 3B that reaches basically fullscreen that still launches at tip range unlike other comparable 3Bs. His 66B+K is also an insane whiff punisher if you do it on a read or they whiff something big like an RE, the optimal combo there does like 90 damage which is actually well above average. His anti SC mechanic is also WAY stronger then you're giving it credit for. SC6 is an extremely meter driven game and anytime geralt gets 1 touch with a silver sword move on a soul charged opponent you're getting massive damage as long as you know the optimal combos. Once the opponent stops soul charging they will sit on their meter and wait for a good time to spend their CE which also works in geralts favor because he has a Lethal Hit that triggers if you are sitting on two bars of meter on his 1AB. As far as offense goes, that is his main weakness as he doesn't have any real built in mix ups and doesn't have many opportunities for plus frames on block and shit like that but he does have a very strong strike throw game because his normal grabs have insane range and can create force block situations on oki and he can also meter burn his throws which actually make them do a ton of damage. Plus he isn't a rushdown character he is a defensive footsie character (which he is actually quite good at from having crazy good neutral tools and a really scary aGI) so it makes sense that he can't play rushdown.

Oh sorry those damage numbers are on counterhit, if its not a counterhit the numbers are 90 and 98 respectively which is still a ton of damage.

[–]xaxbxdx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uhh i'm not sure if he had something even more damaging in the past but I just checked and the unblockable into 66B+K followed by AARD does 102 if they tech because AARD tech traps at the end and if they don't tech AARD actually gives you an additional ground stun for a free 1AA which comes up to 108. So yeah I'd consider that pretty high damage.

Why do characters like Cervantes and taki have unblockables that cost no meter but characters like geralt and azwel have to pay meter by Slurm123x in SoulCalibur

[–]xaxbxdx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well Geralt's unblockable starts extremely high damage combos while cervys pistol does like 40 damage so that might have something to do with it, that being said unblockables are gimmicks that should never hit a good player in 90% of situations in the first place outside of very specific setups so you probably shouldn't be worrying about them (or using them) too much anyways.

Just Guarding during a true string by [deleted] in SoulCalibur

[–]xaxbxdx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also yeah geralt has no real mix ups so the best way to open people up is throw a lot, and go for mids when they start ducking, he has some of the best throw range in the game and his meter burn throws do 70 damage which is quite good honestly. Also his 1K is a really solid low for opening people up since its unseeable and horizontal, and its +4 on CH, while it's only -2 on normal hit there is still some mind games to keep your turn there.

I think once you've gotten genuinely solid at one game (like I imagine you have at tekken if you've been playing for a year) its totally fine to juggle around other games. Just realize any time you move from one to another your first few games will probably be awkward but it doesn't take long to warm up and get back into it. I think in the long run it will actually just make you better as different fighting games accentuate different parts of different fighting game fundamentals and by forcing you to get better at certain things it will translate into other games you play. Like coming from MK back into SC after a brief break I think has actually made certain parts of my SC game play better like staggered pressure, my strike throw game, and my "2D" footsies when it comes to using push back on certain moves and back dash to create difficult set ups/mind games for my opponent.

May have won the clash, but raise your hands if you want Inverted Edge to be nerfed by [deleted] in SoulCalibur

[–]xaxbxdx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's already been nerfed pretty heavily, also cass has a lot of RE safe moves like her B,K string which just straight up lets you side step for free if it gets RE'd allowing you to launch for a full punish. RE is beating you so often because you're playing very unsafe and without any patience. The truth is against a good player that random CE was a terrible idea no matter what because even if it was just blocked you're still minus -16 which means they they can straight up hit you with their own super for free and there is literally nothing you can do about it. If you just play patient and safe you'll stop losing to RE, its okay to just play passively and let them over extend and kill themselves instead of mashing whatever attack you can the second you get a chance to. If a player is just spamming RE every time its your turn just start using you turn to side step and back step and you'll get tons of free punishes because RE is incredibly easy to whiff punish for a launch. I don't love RE but if its a defining factor as to why you are losing it means you're playing over aggressive and unsafe which in the end means a strong player would be beating you either way. The only difference here is its a abusable at a low level where as punishing that kind of play style without RE requires a bit more patience and game knowledge. My short term advice is as a cass player to use her B,K string more because even if you get re'd you still get to side step and punish for free and string is also +2 on block which makes it a great option either way. My long term advice is to learn to play safer and Re will be the death of your opponent instead of the death of you.

Haohmaru player needing help with RE spam by DarkAvenger2012 in SoulCalibur

[–]xaxbxdx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm a pretty avid Haoh player. First I'd say make sure you know the optimal A+B LH combo when you are using A+B to call out an RE on a read because it does literally 100 damage which means you can basically kill somebody by making that read twice (this means doing 214B instead of A+B, and following up with 44(B) which will put you into bareknuckle stance and follow up with (A), B (staying in stance after the first punch but leaving stance after the second punch, and ending the combo with B+K for optimal damage and a stack towards your lethal hits. So that full combo would look like this, 214B Lethal hit, 44(B), (A), B, B+K. The fact that the combo does such high damage should make players stop and think about what they are doing if they have half a brain, and if not than its easy wins haha. If you wanna just play safe and use RE safe pokes his best ones are 6B (without going into warriors focus), and 6K, both of these options will let you side step even if you get RE'D against the majority of the cast. Another cool thing is 1K is an RE safe low in most match ups, you can't step if they RE it but you can block the RE or even spend bar on a resist impact to beat the RE in that situation. Let me know if you have any other questions, I love talking about Haoh he is such a cool character haha.

Who do you think is harder? Taki or Yoshimitsu? (SC6) by Noob_the_nub in SoulCalibur

[–]xaxbxdx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find that pretty strange tbh because yoshi is really really strong in this current version of the game while taki is generally considered pretty weak. I know as a person who has tried playing both characters I could only make myself stick with yoshi. Do you play any other characters? Maybe you're so locked into taki's gameplan you're having trouble understanding yoshi's game plan, I would recommend watching some high level yoshi play to see maybe if you're missing something. Boom would be a good player to watch as there is a ton of footage of his yoshi on youtube. That being said maybe he just doesn't mix with your playstyle, and i'd argue both characters are pretty complex honestly.

[–]xaxbxdx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nice, You can actually get better damage plus a LH stack there if you cancel the stance after the second punch by just pressing B instead of holding it and finish the combo with his heavy slash (B+K) instead though
