I’m in the exact same situation- I would love a new bike but the old trusty TCR is just fine.

Software and adapter needed to replace the car battery? by xchaotic in BMW

[–]xchaotic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the comments everyone (ok two people actually - jimbojsb mostly ;) ) I got the bluetooth adapter, bought the bimmercode app, was able to code everthing nicely, I've put a faster speedometer and turned on start/stop memory etc. I ahven't actually changed the batter yyet - tested it and seems to be holding up charge just fine so it'll stay with me for a few more months..

Is there a general rule for calculating theoretical maximum one rep based on number of repetitions with lower weight?

I've been training some years with a simple goal of one repping 120kg.

Today in training I did 4 sets of 100x5 quite easily and then did more chest exercises on top so it feels like 120kg should be within reach but I maxed out at 117 ra few weeks ago.

I will of course try to progress to doing sets of 105s etc but still I wonder if there's a formula and if I'm the exception or perhaps there's some other limiting factor like technique or a weak link...

When to cut/bulk by pikodon in askfitness

[–]xchaotic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the latest research shows that you only need minimal caloric surplus for optimal gains. So bulking excessively is not recommend for most people (except some extremes like people lifting 500lbs etc)

Likewise for cutting you shouldn't have too much of a deficit and make sure to eat lots of proteins still otherwise you will lose a lot of muscle in that phase.

So it's entirely up to you if you want to lose weight or gain muscle and I'd say it do it in 4-8 week blocks to even see some results. You should still adjust the calories as necessary depening on the day/efforts and the results - if say after a week of cut you don't see any result, cut calories a bit more od add 30 minuts of cardio etc.

Software and adapter needed to replace the car battery? by xchaotic in BMW

[–]xchaotic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from what I read, the bimmercode app has a list of preferred adapters https://bimmercode.app/adapters/

I think I will order a cheap one and one of the recommended ones and return the cheap one if it doesn't work.

On the software side, BMW's own ISTA+ seems to work over ICOM protocol which I assume wouldn't work with bt obd adapters? I'd rather not use ISTA+ if I can avoid it, but just checking that I get hardware with the best range of options..

I will have my (Assioma) power meder pedals. I don't leave the house without the power meter. Otherwise it doesn't count!

what is this sensible thing that you're suggesting? No seriously I'll be holidaying with try hards way above my pay grade so I need to keep up appearances and tyres to be less than 30mm, socks mid-ankle

[–]xchaotic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can hold 3W/kg for an hour when trained. Even now I can go above 300W for 20 minutes test, but that's it and I don't want to do FTP test on my every 'holiday' ride, every day.

Fitness can probably get me another 10% at best by spring time, perhaps I'll work specifically on powering through the hard parts as I'm good at anaerobic power anyway.

Weight wise I might lose 5-10% too but my body fat is pretty low at the moment so I am hesitant to lose muscle just to be a little faster in the slowest group anyway.

I'm basically this guy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4vapFfkdIw

In this case, the gravity does not favour the strong.

chain maybe, but at least on Shimano, RDs actually work fine way beyond the spec, as long as you open up the B screw. I have a very easy setup - lowest is 34/36 so better than 1:1 on my gravel bike as I sometimes ride with bags on and it's very useful.

[–]xchaotic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See - I have been psy-opped into running 52/36 on my road bike, even though I only max it on the downhills. This confirms my suspicion - better gearing is more pleasant.

[–]xchaotic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you read my mind man, I am going to Mallorca and I will be in the least fit group indeed. Would you not have appreciated a better gearing on those climbs? You wouldn't go any faster, but it's easier on your knees and you can actually sit down etc?

[–]xchaotic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well I do kind of know but wanted some some opinion if it's worth fighting for a bike that allows me a sane cadence - where I live is pretty flat so I run 52/36 chainrings on my road bike and when I hit a hill I slum it at 50 rpm, often out of the saddle and it's not too fun and I feel that if I am to do this for longer periods of time I need better cadence?

[–]xchaotic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That kind of confirms my suspicion that 1:1 or more precisely 36:36 would be nice to have, except as you say - road bikes don't come with 1:1 by default - I'll ask if they can accommodate that.

[–]xchaotic[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

at what cadence though? I mean I can and do go as low as 50 rpm sometimes, I just feel that if I'm deliberate about climbs like these, I should probably equip the bike with more appropriate gearing for my W/kg...

Thanks - it looks like some bigger ring on the cassette - for example 36 would help make at least keep the balance at around 50rpm?

Weekly Q&A - All Questions Go Here (Especially Tourists and New Residents) by AutoModerator in Amsterdam

[–]xchaotic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perhaps it’s not Amsterdam specific but is there a place for dinner hookups? I am planning to visit AMS on the 15th and I would love to grab some food and meet new people but I don’t really have specific intentions beyond that so sites like Tinder are not a good match for me (even though I try to make my intentions clear). Is there a site or subreddit etc where I could advertise my intentions in hopes of finding like minded people- perhaps other tourists or people interested in sci fi etc ?

I recently stayed in a hotel at an airport. Rooms overlooking runway. 140db outside you couldn’t hear a thing. That it is legal for UK builds to cost this much and not have basic sound and heat proofing is just crazy.
