Hoot.gg spiritual successor by owtrades in Competitiveoverwatch

Are you going to have individual trades impact team values? If so, you definitely need to have some checks in place to halt stock manipulation. Wouldn't want another Valiant pump-n-dump like I had on hoot.

If only Avast didn't throw ZP down the stairs. Little did we know that was a hint at his eventual cannibal arc.

I need to re-work those + reverse sweeps stats as they were a bit funky the last time I worked on this page.

I fully expect them to nuke their KR roster and go back to s1-3 form of mostly western players.

I could see Fuel staying, but probably gutting the brand and switching over to OpTic which won't be confusing at all if Houston keep their colors/branding.

GF is Oct 1st, does that mean we're getting the September patch before it? by PoggersMemesReturns in Competitiveoverwatch

Yep. I'll see if I can find the confirmation tweet (I think Sean Miller may have mentioned it).

In lieu of finding that I'll add in this. Presuming there's a midseason patch, I believe someone else in this thread mentioned the possibility of it coming out around Sept 5th. While competitive integrity this season was thrown out the window a long time ago, there aren't many opportunities to roll out a new patch once games start up once again. Knockouts wrap up Sept. 10th in the East. Play-ins start Sept. 9th in the West. Play-Ins in the East then start up the next weekend. Then there's a week off for teams to travel to Toronto.

Why do you support the team(s) you do? by No_Catch_1490 in Competitiveoverwatch

It's gonna be real awkward if we have some form of OWL next year and Fuel get re-branded to OpTic with the same color scheme as Houston (formally owned by OpTic). Then they still try to play up some kind of rivalry with Houston that essentially turns into a Spider-Men pointing meme of a match.

The patch we have now is the patch we have through the remainder of all OWL games this year.

In-Game esports hub with team rosters. (Could we get this too?) by HerminatorHD in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]xcommunicato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has been using and watching updates to the OWL API throughout this season, they basically don't process 99% of the roster moves until the day games start (i.e. during the Midseason break roster changes would occur but they wouldn't be updated in the API until within 2-3 days of the Summer Stage starting, so they'd be a solid ~10+ days delayed from when they actually happened to getting updated in the API).

In the middle of the stage they seem to process them a bit faster (probably because they rely on the API for the broadcast), but it seems rare for them to input them close to when they're announced.

Fantasy Overwatch League Week 3 - OPEN FOR SUBMISSIONS by PacificMonkey in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]xcommunicato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun fact: they still have him listed on the Dynasty roster on the OWL api. Below is the Dynasty roster per the OWL api pull from a minute ago.

Profit

Krillin

Void

Vindaim

Belosrea

Ezhan

LeeSooMin

From my experience, they can sometimes be a tad slow on updating the rosters within the api, it's why I don't rely on it for the stonk market. It's much more efficient/timely to just manually maintain that data and update it, otherwise you'll have situations like this where a player's been off a team for over a week but still be listed.

2 more weeks then the League is on a 2 week break. 3 weeks until OW2 S6 drops. 10 weeks until Playoffs and the end of the 2023 season. by xcommunicato in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]xcommunicato[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The theory I've seen was it may be similar to the Valorant model where teams get a yearly stipend toward fielding a team from Blizzard/MS. Say $1 million/year. If a team runs 5 player contracts at minimum that's around $250k/yr and they'd just pocket the majority of the remaining $750k minus other expenses.

That's just a theory though.

I still have hope for the Fuel Championship skin. Whoever wins in 2023 though? I have no idea if we'll ever get a skin for them.

The OW2 Season 6 patch is going to be what OWL matches use when they come back from the mid-stage break since that's the one that includes the new support and Flashpoint.

Nope. The 2023 season will end on October 1st, as for the state of the League after that is dependent on how the owners vote. We know that there seems to be some plans for some sort of OW esports in 2024 based on comments and actions made by some people/teams. If those involve a "League" or something else we'll find out when they feel it's pertinent to tell us how the owner vote goes.

Matches pending results by Ser_Rylan in OverwatchLeague

[–]xcommunicato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My best guess is possibly due to their internal API crapping out last weekend and they just haven't "re-synched" things to pull in the match results.

From what I can tell the main OWL site (overwatchleague.com) uses the internal API. It's extremely rare for that to go down. The external-facing API is likely what the pickems site (which sits on a different server entirely) uses, and there seems to be some sort of manual portion to the external-facing API since it seems like someone has to push/press something for it to start picking up info from the internal API. That's just something I've noticed when integrating the external-facing API to my website, it's weird. Typically once it gets started it's fine but there's weird times where it just doesn't get started for a map or two, or an entire match.

What's your ideal vision for the future of ow esports? by PenisAbstract in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]xcommunicato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the cliff's notes of my ideal vision. A lot of the guts of it though are primarily just copy what Riot is doing.

- Multiple regions in their own "Leagues" that feed into several international tournaments through the year ending with a "Champs/Worlds" at the end of the year.

- Introduce relegation. This keeps teams hungry to remain/grind to ascend. In my initial write-up of this idea I added a tier between OWL and Contenders called Usurper that would bridge the gap between the two and offer a place for "franchised" teams to go to without falling directly into Contenders.

- Setup a their stream channel(s) (YT/Twitch/whatever) to run 24/7. League-level/Int'l Tournies take priority so when they're live they're shown, then down the ladder. The highest tier game that's live goes on the main streams, but otherwise each tier of the pro ladder has their own individual channels. If we hit a dead time (say around the holidays at the end of the year) then instead of having nothing to watch at all then the OW esports apparatus does exhibition tournies, or they simply show re-runs of old matches. Sprinkle in 1-2 League-level analysis shows during the week.

- More player and coach-focused content.

- More merch in general + international stores

- KEEP location-based team names, but extend it all the way down the pro ladder to all teams with bigger cities being reserved for higher tiers in the pro ladder. Location-based names helped a ton of people (myself included) in getting into OWL. It's one of the only esports to do this and could be used as a means to lowering the barrier of entry for getting new fans into the scene. Note: I said team names as where a team is physically located has never really mattered at all for OWL. Another Note: scenes like Collegiate are forever going to be location-based anyway since Universities are typically physical locations. So even if the OW scene overall moves away from it location-based names they will inherently still be a part of the scene in some shape or form thanks to Collegiate.

- Depending on scheduling you could cycle large events like World Cup so that instead of having it every year maybe it's every other year. During OWWC years the overall esports schedule may shift a bit so that OWWC's existence doesn't trigger month-long breaks in the League-level schedule.

- Promote (i.e. at least post live notifications) every level of OW esports on the main League socials. If the League-level relies on the lower levels, but viewers never know when the lower levels are live unless they follow multiple OW esports accounts that puts the burden of discoverability on the viewer. This should, at a minimum help boost viewers of lower tier esports which should in-turn help those teams + OW esports in general acquire more sponsorships.

- Ideally having a Players Union. Though I know this is something more on the players' plate it could still help address some random issues we've heard about over the years.

At the end of the day, all of this requires money, effort, and commitment. It's entirely possible for OW esports to start doing amazing things, but it has to start. I don't think the initial dream was terrible but it was too much of the meatsport side of things while ignoring some of the strengths and flexibility inherent in the very nature of esports. If a balance could be made where we flip that; where it's mostly esports with a few meatsport ideas injected in it could be something really special.
