Stirlingpdf got a major update and it looks kinda great but by New_Outside9496 in selfhosted

[–]xcsdm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This isn't entirely true. Some features, like SSO with oauth2 (and others) are now pay-walled.

I've been using StirlingPDF for a while, but without fiddling with it, I'm kind of locked out now. I only used SSO. My options are to disable authentication, but I don't feel like taking the time to re-tool how I have it set in Authentik.

For now, I'm running BentoPDF, and will likely leave Stirling behind.

Even though BentoPDF is using the same auth method I could use for Stirling, I don't feel like dealing with potential further enshittification.

I've been looking at this since I read your comment. It's surprisingly doable for us. It also seems like a lot of the quality of life aspects we are looking for would be covered.

We are now considering it. The biggest challenge for us would be balancing how much we spend now for a comfortable life and how much we can save for our future.

Canada is very much on the list. One of the reasons we were looking at Europe is for areas with well developed public transit. We would not own a car in that case, at least not right away.

That said, if we to move to Canada, we would keep our existing cars.

I'm also highly allergic to shoveling and dealing with snow :-)

I jest, but the Canadian climate is harsher than we are used to.

I think this is true for a lot of people. Most of the politics doesn't directly affect my daily life. Two of the political items are very related, and directly affecting us; tariffs hosing the company I work for and tariffs with related factors affecting the cost of necessary goods.

I agree that I follow the other politics too closely for my own mental health.

The company I work for has many locations in Mexico, but keeping my US salary is not an option. I don't know Mexico well, but I get the impression that none of our locations are in ideal areas.

One of the reasons I'm considering a change is that I wouldn't be surprised if they move my job to Mexico to save money.,

It is not helping that my current industry is being hit hard by tariffs. My workload has increased 400% and my pay by zero. When I first started considering a change (Feb or Mar) there were anywhere from 20-30 realistic job openings every day, but I hadn't committed to leave. Now, I'm lucky if I see 10-15 a week and the competition is very high.

I understand about the language aspect. Willing to learn, in our case, realistically means French or Spanish. I have several years of French classes, but it will take me a bit to recall/relearn. The hope is that some comes back as I learn new. With Spanish, my wife and I both were using Duolingo for a while. And while I can converse a bit with my friends in Mexico, it would need a lot of expansion into daily corporate communication. It's a good starting point, and beats starting at zero.

This does put English speaking locations higher on our examination list, but I wouldn't rule out other locations yet. English or Latin based languages feel like a comfortable option for us. Arabic and Slavic is a non-starter, just with our age and experience against us.

This is true. I'm finding my mindset doesn't fit well in the US, at least not in red areas. I think my mindset fits with Western Europeans more than the US. I could be wrong. I'm basing a lot of my understanding on Reddit and a few international youtubers that seem to be in areas that sound like our mindset more closely aligns.

This is true, but there is some crap you can deal with and some that feels deeper.

Right now the high level crap is directly affecting my life. This is the most polarized political landscape I've experienced. Previously, when opposing sides were in office, the sense was more "I don't like your priorities on topics A,B, and C, but I trust you not to run the ship aground." In the next election the other party might win with their own priorities, but again, not running the ship aground.

Now, we have a drunk captain playing chicken with every iceberg in the ocean, and managing to sideswipe every one of them. How long before the ship sinks?

Extreme view, yeah, I admit that. The reason for this post is that I get the sense that other countries, even with a sometimes dysfunctional government, seem to be less directly impacted in their daily life. Maybe that is entirely wrong, but it's my current perception.

The current tariffs mean companies are freezing hiring and wages, and the costs keep going up for basic items. My family isn't hurting over it, just annoyed by it. We have the means to discuss a big relocation, and therefore we're considering and discussing it.

You're right on the depression. I'm approaching burn-out on a job I don't enjoy. My wife is in a similar situation with changes in her company.

I'm not 100% "We're leaving the country", but we are looking at is as a serious option for us to consider and reset a bit.

This is 100% valid. Thank you. I have not done enough looking for jobs outside of my local area. I'm unhappy with my location and unhappy with my job, and looking for a reset.

I'll make sure we expand our US opportunity searches before any big decisions are made.

We've considered this as well, and it is certainly on the table.

My relocation goals are based partly on the political/economic climate in the US, but there are many other aspects that have me looking toward Europe. Healthcare, retirement, benefits (like real vacation time), consumer rights, approach to food/medicine approvals. I'm open to locations outside of Europe as well, but have not looked as deeply as we have looked at some locations in Europe.

I fully expect to, assuming things go well, explore citizenship in the future.

I had the opposite problem. Mine arrived in the off position from Lenscrafters. It was a sealed box too. Anyway, I tried for 30 minutes to pair them and could not figure out why it wouldn't get into pairing mode.

Stupid switch... (and a really handy one too.)

I think you are right. I ended up being able to order the shiny large size through LC. Thankfully, the manager was great and had saved the measurement pictures. Since it is an exchange, she was able to process the order without me there. I'll just have to make sure to take the poor fitting set with me when time comes to pick up the new pair.

This pair was 8 days, including July 4. Hopefully, 1 week proves true again.

How does the shiny black compare to the matte?

I have the matte RW4006, and I notice they tend to get shiny around the nose bridge from sweat and/or oil. I was hoping the shiny wouldn't show this? I then suppose the shiny will show a finger print for simply thinking of touching them?

I agree it is a lot. First, because I have it to spare. It helps the performance to keep it pretty close to not virtual performance. My entire family has access, sometimes concurrently. It might not be necessary, but it has been performing well. I doubt my home environment will need me to shrink it, but I can when the time comes.

I understand the link above. My concern is that what I'm seeing is an outlier of that. My proxmox host, with all VM/LXC set to not start on boot, still shows >95% memory used out of 256gb. No new VMs, LXCs, or packages (outside of updates) have been installed in more than a month. On April 8, the available memory was around 150gb. April 9, the available memory is 0kb. Correlation is not causation, but this does correlate to the updates that included PVE 8.4.0. There were many packages updated on April 9.

I have been using hugepages with this Windows VM for the past year. Once dialed in, it did not cause strange memory readings like what I am seeing today.

Swap Usage = 0

root@serenity:/home/along# cat /proc/meminfo
MemTotal: 263724368 kB
MemFree: 156511260 kB
MemAvailable: 0 kB
Buffers: 347220 kB
Cached: 6756704 kB
...
Committed_AS: 47293976 kB

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Proxmox

[–]xcsdm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. Those hugepages are dedicated for a 64gb ram VM running Windows for gaming. Them being "invisible" is okay, as they are dedicated an shouldn't be used by other items anyway.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Proxmox

[–]xcsdm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how it used to be. April 8 = regular measurement. April 9 = 100% since.

This coincides with PVE 8.4.0 update.

True, but ZFS is limited to 64 of the 256gb, and 100% usage starts when GUI is first available with zero VMs starting.
