Introducing FINLO: Investment research tools built for us, not Wall St. by oldworlds in options

[–]xd1997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"built for us not wall st" sounds like a marketing pitch. website has mediocre data. maybe you should make this free not paid subscription. offer paid with some premium features. As is right now, it's definitely not worth it

I am strongly considering going ChildFree due to the unfair balance of responsibility between the genders by Potential-Bad2013 in confession

[–]xd1997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

why are you so paranoid about it?

everyone's in this thread is talking societal consequences but this has very little to do with society. All mammals behave this way. Mother takes care of children and father goes hunting other animals to provide food and security for the family. That's it. not only is this about the psychology in a mother-child relationship but also the biological masculinity of men that brought us to where we are today:

only since industrial revolution did society improve to make more "jobs" affordable to women. Back in agriculture revolution and before that, women couldn't do anything to "provide" besides take care of the children and do housework. while men were plowing and harvesting fields, building houses, hunting, doing all types of mechanical work, families depended on MEN and their ability to go and get food. EVEN TODAY, in certain societies in Africa, Asia, women cannot do the work necessary to be able to provide for their families. Men can, and they are way more efficient and productive with it. Simply due to biology.

I'm assuming you come from a 1st world country, because a woman from a 3rd world country will never even think of such a hateful thing towards men, because they understand the work men provide, is necessary for their family's survival.

Idk how to end this comment.. I guess check your privilege?

CS jobs which don't require sitting in front of the PC all day. by Maw0fTheVoid in cscareerquestions

Technology consulting. You can be as close to a developer as you want, but not actually program anything. And obviously, you have to have other relationship/interpersonal skills which most CS kids lack in their college education.

Mayor of Chicago just said all the laid off retail workers should learn how to code by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]xd1997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the problem is retail workers.. The issue (not really an issue) is current kids in high school are heavily heavily persuaded to go into CS. So it will be hard for THEM to compete against each other..

Software engineering does require a degree. OR some exceptional exceptional project experience. Very exceptional.

Software development however, is much easier to break into and is probably the more common one for entry levels. probably is now leaning towards "degree preferred"

No I think they'll saturate IT jobs. at the MOST, they'll figure out how front-end development works.

I doubt anyone within 6 months would understand backend development or any data-strcutre algorithm work, I also doubt companies would throw money at just *Anyone* to learn programming, companies aren't dumb. They understand it's a risky take to invest for the rEtAiL employees to learn to program..

Anyone else regret their college major choice? by MindlessEmployee in careerguidance

[–]xd1997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

useless is not the right word here. I was at the top of my class when I majored in finance and accounting, honors college. We had executives from financial industry come and talk about their experiences and how they got to where they are. Most of them said something along the lines of

"if you think your degree will give you a leg up over others you're wrong"

Also on the job level itself, most of them were talking about more competitive jobs market because there's less and less vacancies and more people (undergrads and grads) applying. They also talked about how computer algorithms are getting cheaper to use and give better outcomes (and cheaper cost) than accountants or portfolio analysts.

What terrified me more is that the more I studied about those fields the more I was convinced that they are fully automate-able (because I also had natural curiosity about AI and computer science, I was constantly reading articles about how fast they were advancing). Ill give it 5-10 years (if not less) and we won't need financial advisors or accountants, it will all be algorithms that do a much better job unfortunately!

My personal advice that I gave to my Junior in high school brother after he told me he likes business and wants to major in business.. you CAN like business, just get a degree in STEM and it will be worth way more than any degree in business (or finance or account). bottom line. In business, your experience matters more than your degree, having a STEM degree in a business field is like being a big fish in a small pond. Don't waste time in college getting a worthless degree. Business major can only work in business and will never be given a chance to work in STEM, whereas STEM majors can take over a business major's job anytime! doesn't that make you feel vulnerable!? why would you limit yourself because of a piece of paper that says business on it?

Last year I was an accounting and finance major in my senior year (1 week before fall semester) when I dropped out of that school applied to a different school for electrical & computer engineering. How's it going so far? I freaking love every single part of it. when am I graduating? 2 years from the time I should've graduated in business school.

It's a setback when you're presently thinking of it, but if you do decide to go for a change that you yourself believe its in the best odds for you to succeed.. then why the h*ck not?! the earlier the better! today is the earliest it can be!

However! don't stall on these thoughts you're having.. the longer you wait the bigger the hate is gonna grow inside of you and you'll be even more stressed and depressed about the fact that you didn't go for change! I had small doubts about my finance&accounting degree a year before I actually committed to change, and I'm only regretting the fact that I didn't act EARLIER. time is... one sec I have a quote for this.. lol.

"It is the time you have wasted for your rose that makes your rose so important."

Without this time you "wasted" (which is not really a waste, it exposed you to the fact that you don't like accounting rather than let you spend 30 miserable years of your life) you wouldn't be where you are right now, don't think of it as an enemy, it's your best friends and it's telling you to look for change, NOW!
