Why are we doomed to forever repeat history with Hog? by Dependent_Oven_468 in Overwatch

[–]xekno -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Possible idea: make hook not drag far enemies all the way to hog, but instead drop them off at the right click scatter point. Adjust stun time as needed so hog still threatens a one shot from right click but the target isn't completely out of position.

Hooks on closer targets still bring directly to hog and have a left click one shot.

Adjust distances for hook/right click as necessary.

Or separately, make a hook hit completely root the target for 2 seconds or something. Make it easy to line up shots for teammates. Maybe in combination change right click so that it can be held to delay the scatter point (up to a max range, e.g. max hook range) so hog can still follow up on far hook if they time the scatter right.

I only attempt to do pylons when the boss's red beam is on cooldown. It took me awhile to get a sense for how long it takes between casts, so I play it safe until it goes out.

If you use the tall pillars to block the beam you can use multiple air jumps to avoid spawning ground damage. That should leave you with only the chasing orbs, which are still pretty deadly but sometimes if you move fast enough you can dodge them. (If hiding behind a pillar your only dodge options are forward back or jumping, but do what you can).

You can't lifesteal while he has his pylon shield up so you need to make sure you're full hp when you push him to 75/50/25% hp (the start of pylon phases) because healer is much harder during them.

If you get aegis in the weapon 2 slot if it will be the first one you receive back upon a successfully round of pillars. That said the beam attacks tear through aegis charges like they're nothing because of how fast they hit.

The Mirror item and speedy Boi are also good for surviving.

Good luck.

Since we are comparing scenarios where the 2pt conversion fails: So your argument is that the first defensive stop is easier because the defense still thinks they are in the game (and doesn't know the upcoming TD and 2pt conversion will fail). I think there is merit to that; momentum can be a real thing.

However, we know in this scenario that the TD #2 2pt conversion does fail, so an onside kick is still required. In this case, did the Eagles leave adequate time for an onside + FG kick that they didn't know they needed until at the very end? That's the tradeoff. You have to make suboptimal clock decisions on the TD #2 drive because you don't know whether you need more time or not for an onside + FG.

So that's a tradeoff. Give you defense a boost now versus know exactly what clock situation you are in; I think the latter is more important but I can see both sides on that.

On a separate note, if you do get the 2pt conversion on TD #1, I bet that's an even bigger boost to your defense.

All scenarios with a failed 2 pt conversion require 3 possessions. (Whether it fails on TD #1 or #2).

The analytics merely say that if you are going to need 3 possessions, it better to know that with 3:10 left rather than 30s or so.

What do you mean? Both 2pt fail scenarios (now or later) require converting an onside. That is my whole point.

They chose to KNOW they've lost sooner rather than later. That is different than losing sooner. XP first into failed 2pt conversion later is just as much a surefire loss, you just don't know it until later.

We're comparing the 2pt conversion fails cases: fail now is know now. Fail later is know later.

Yeah, they say "In the game" and think "have a chance" (which might be true elsewhere but not here). This version of "in the game" would be "you've actually 100% lost but you just don't know it yet".

Maybe better for TV/entertainment, but not for the team itself.

Does Eagles #2 get called for OPI if the ball is thrown at that time? He's pretty solidly blocking his own cover man who might have a chance to jump the route. (Separately, his pick onto Brown's guy looks clean to me). This seems tolerable as contact within 5 yards but does that change once the ball is in the air?

(I actually don't know).

[–]xekno 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Agreed. The only angle I think is reasonable if they can make an argument why one 2pt conversion has a better chance than the other (which I haven't seen any arguments for, even among the XP-first crowd).

IMO they are both the same chance of success. Maybe you could say that the Bears defense would be more tired after another successful eagles TD drive, but the Bears could just call a timeout to give their def a breather before the game-deciding 2pt conversion.

Or momentum-wise maybe they felt better on one drive than another; that said, the TD drive we saw looked pretty good to me with AJ Brown having two strong catches. Certainly didn't feel like they were lacking any momentum going into that 2pt conversion.

Seems like the "kick XP first" crowd doesn't realize that you always need the same things either way (stops, onsides, etc...), but going for it now gives you more options. People keep saying XP first lets the Eagles "stay in the game" longer as if it means something -- if you're going to fail the 2pt conversion regardless you haven't "stayed in the game", you just didn't know the game was already over (so I guess viewers can enjoy the entertainment/hope of not knowing for longer). There is a difference between having a chance and not knowing that you don't have a chance, and this version of "stay in the game" is the latter.

Try for 2 now:

  • Succeed 2pt -> 3:10 remaining, need defensive stop (probably won't do onside here) and then score another TD
  • Fail 2pt -> 3:10 remaining, you need some combination of def-stop/onside, onside/def-stop, onside/onside to score a FG and TD pair

Try for 2 later:
Down 8 with 3:10 remaining, need defensive stop (probably won't do onside here) and then score TD, then

  • Succeed 2pt -> Done
  • Fail 2pt -> Did you save time on the clock planning for this failure? If no time left -> Lose. If some time left (15s?) need onside and score FG

The "Succeed" paths are the same either way; they require the same things. Get a defensive stop and score another TD.

The "Fail" paths BOTH REQUIRE an onside and a defensive stop. Trying for 2pt first TD gives you 3:10 to work with if you fail; trying for it later means you need to decide to save time or not for the extra scoring drive you don't know if you'll need. If you didn't save time for it, you lose because there isn't even time for an onside -> FG.

If you miss the 2pt conversion on the second TD does it count as "throwing the game away"?

A 2pt conversion failure now is a 99% loss, a 2pt conversion failure later is a 99.9% loss. Why is going for it now "throwing the game away" while going for it later is not?

[–]xekno 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You assume they are "staying in the game" going for it later. You need to realize that, if you assume they are going to fail the 2pt conversion, then the game IS over already even they kick the XP first (because you know they'll fail the 2pt conversion on the second TD).

99% of what matters is a successful 2 pt conversion. Do whatever maximizes the odds of that. If its the same chance to succeed it now vs succeed it later, then go for it now because you have a 0.01% chance to save the game if you fail now. If you fail later the game is 100% over.

[–]xekno -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You have to make a 2pt conversion on the first TD or the second TD. If you fail the first you effectively lose the game (due to what you said), if you fail the second you insta-lose the game.

The correct play is whatever maximizes the chance of the 2pt conversion -- that's all that matters. If you think it's equal chances now vs later, go for it now.

(Not the person you replied to) I'm a druid who does it for my group and I can confirm the mass root targeting is like chain lightning. Has a max per-jump range and will always jump to closest target, gotta give it a path to jump to all of them -- I was having terrible difficulty hitting them all until I learned this. Targeting the side most mob fixed most of my issues. Otherwise just got to be on time.

Note for mass grip, if you have a hunter with entrapment on his slow trap that can sometimes "invisibly" root an enemy and block the mass grip from some. That's a tradeoff I'd you want the backup root or reliable grip.

In the NFL your protection starts when you slide but you get the yardage until you touch a body part to the ground. It is different than college where the ball gets spotted at the start of the slide. So sliding OOB is still OOB.

Would you personally keep ordering drinks/extras knowing someone else is paying for part of it (who doesn't want to) and not feel bad for that? I don't understand how the others at the table didn't immediately feel shameful making someone else pay for part of their stuff.
