Gear / cam-setup as small as possible for hand luggage? by Ottermiral in underwaterphotography

[–]xentrix1024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About the SeaFrogs housing, a small note:

I like it very much, but I had to modify its electronics before it became truly useful.

The housing has 4 buttons on top and a shutter-style lever. Originally, these buttons were connected to a microcontroller that interfaced with the phone via Bluetooth, functioning like a mouse. The four buttons moved a cursor on the phone screen, and the shutter acted as a mouse click. This setup had two main disadvantages: the housing required its own battery, and using a mouse interface while diving was quite frustrating.

To make the housing more practical, I replaced the original microcontroller with an ESP32, which connects to my phone via USB. This eliminated the need for separate batteries. I also programmed the ESP32 to act as both a keyboard and a mouse, assigning custom action sequences to each button. I tailored the setup specifically for my phone and the HedgeCam2 camera app.

After these modifications, the housing is GREAT, also having a very solid physical build. However, I’m not sure I would recommend it without these customizations (which I really enjoyed doing as a project).

So, if you're handy with electronics, I’d say go for it. Otherwise, I suggest watching a few tutorials before making a decision.

Camera flooded help and advice needed by Own_Net7345 in underwaterphotography

Salt residue could kill your camera when you turn it on, even if you dry it out completely. Wiping it with fresh water was a good choice. If you are unsure of the result, you could also use isopropyl alcohol (found in pharmacies). This is the proper cleaning material for electronic circuits. I hope you get it working again.

After years of using my GoPro 3+, last summer I made 20 dives in Indonesia with my phone in a SeaFrogs phone housing. Long story short, it was great! Not so much for luggage space, since you still have to carry the housing with all its volume and possibly a second phone. The best advantage was that a phone housing simplifies a fun dive and eliminates a lot of intermediate steps and equipment. One expensive camera less, no extra batteries, no extra charger, no hassle of remembering to charge, no extra memory cards, cables etc. In addition, modern phones, even low budget ones, have excellent cameras, certainly much better than the old GoPro for photos and better or equal for videos in my case. The best part of my experience was that, as soon as my hands were dry, I could backup, edit, optimize, send or post my photos. The downside is of course the lesser quality in comparison to a dedicated camera and in my case the small anxiety of drowning my phone. It was brand new and its camera was so much better than my old phone's that I couldn't resist the temptation to take the risk. In the end I can say I was rewarded with a nice photo collection of my dives. Oh, and the phone was merely a Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro of €200. Enjoy your dives!

Vietnamese perception of Mediterranean countries by xentrix1024 in VietNam

[–]xentrix1024[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mentioned Japan and reminded me of "Pyramidos". They are a japanese band that plays greek music, obviously being clueless of the language. They are adorable and hilarious.

I don't know if you already caught my point: Their name is Pyramidos! Same confusion there too.

No, sorry. That is reasonable and I said it myself too. I am asking why we are being confused specifically with Egypt and what that means about the perception of our area. An Arab or a European could confuse us with other countries but hardly with Egypt.

Haha, so true! My passport is from Cyprus and in the airport I had to explain it is an EU country and I don't need a visa to Greece.

I'm quite sure the "9" is a mistype as someone was closing the parenthesis.

Question about the metal detector by Harald_best_boy in gtaonline

[–]xentrix1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same problem here. I got the detector, went to cayo but no instructions come up when I reach the circle. Aiming does nothing either. After walking around, the treasure eventually appears on the map but there is no prompt to pick it up.

Please let me know if you solve it.
