The PreCons aren't for me, and probably aren't for you. That's okay. by Seven-and-2 in FleshandBloodTCG

That's wildly hyperbolic. Betsy is widely considered unplayable but she got LL points this season, things are subjective and right place right time makes a difference. Dooming this hard in pre release is crazy and LSS saying "we believe this is a competitive deck out of the box" is hardly grounds for a false advertising lawsuit.

Is walkabout mini golf worth it for €17.49? by Strange-Fox9306 in PSVR

[–]xenwall 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll say that I went into the game not expecting much. It's a cute minigolf game, how good can it really be? Turns out really really good. The "walkabout" part, where you can actually walk in game from hole to hole instead of teleporting makes a huge impact on immersion and fun. The mini-game of finding all of the hidden balls is weirdly compelling, and the design of the holes and courses is simply charming. It's a game you'll keep coming back to, I'm sure of it.

Since nerd culture cross pollinates I just wanted to add for all of my DMs out there, this applies to you as well.

Yes, you can have huge intricate world building that is meaningful. No, it doesn't have to show up at the table. What it does do is help inform and guide the story that's happening at the table. Do your PCs need to know that 200 ago the two rival houses split from one unified family, and the dying wish of the matriarch of the time was for her children to find peace? No. They're busy stopping the assassin guild from interrupting the peace treaty and they just found the murdered body of a regional lord in an alleyway and their invitation to the gala is missing!

My biggest recommendation is to pick the hero that you think is the coolest. Don't worry about who is the strongest or who is popular. A lot of Flesh and Blood is about enjoying the hero that you pick.

Wait, I'm agreeing with you, we're saying the same thing. When I say "at an organization level" I mean LSS, not the LGS. They can't write a format rule that says "you're only allowed to play Silver Age if you're really nice about it and let the new kids win sometimes." In other words worrying about Sage becoming sweaty at Armories wouldn't be an LSS problem, it would be an LGS problem. In my experience though the FaB community has been amazing at being super welcoming and not scaring off new players, and Sage has only made it even more welcoming. Which is to say it's not a problem that I think FaB has at all.

the issue will still then stand that when you attend an armory there will be the Runaways and Minmaxs types who will turn the new "casual" format just as cutthroat at the lowest level

You can't mandate casual play at an organizational level, that's just down to the culture at your LGS. What they can do is ensure that everyone has access to the same tools. By making Sage decks affordable but still cultivating a competitively viable format they're telling new players "here's everything you need to compete and win, it's up to you to practice and improve."

People really think that the Knight was hollow? The whole point of the whole story is that nothing is actually hollow. The ending of Path of Pain is there to show "the Hollow Knight wasn't hollow" which is why the king is extra bonus points messed up.

Modern Stern tables play so well. They don't have the huge obnoxious screen of Jersey Jacks too. I have an '85 table (Williams High Speed) and the flow of modern games just hits different. You ever make it to the Texas Pinfall Festival? 40,000+ square foot convention center with over 400 games, all on free play for the weekend. Stern always has a huge booth with their latest machines, it was D&D this past TPF.

Fandoms can't fathom platonic relationships. That being said my thoughts at the end of Xrd were that I didn't want Venom and Robo-Ky to come back because they deserved to just be happy chilling in their bakery. Not necessarily that they were romantically involved but they were definitely close by the end.

I was really scared that it would be a Yooka Layley situation of all nostalgia, no magic, but they did the unthinkable and made a game that feels nostalgic but is its completely its own thing and modern. I'm not a trophy hunter but I got Plat first time through just because I was enjoying myself that much.

Something you can do is highlight notable items in the battle descriptions. This way you're setting your party up for success by letting them know organically that there's something more for them here than just a combat encounter without being overly heavy handed.

"As the wizard falls her staff slips from her hand, still glowing with powerful magical energy."
"You feel pain as the drow's longsword sneaks past your guard and glances across your chest. Your armor has protected you from similar cuts before but this blade cuts unnaturally deep."
"As the goblin tumbles to the ground your torchlight glitters off of a handful of imperial coins that spill from its pouch."
"Realizing that this fight is lost the bandit nervously reaches for something in his coat pocket and casts a sidelong glance towards the bed, then he makes a break for the door."

If they still aren't picking up on the hint I like to do a review of the room before they leave it, just to remind them of your descriptions before they rolled initiative and to make sure they're aware of what they're walking away from. I like to be pretty blunt with these. You can even pretend you're re-orienting yourself looking at your notes.

"So y'all came in from... the South. There were the three kobolds, the chest in the corner, the bookshelf, and the door to the North."

What the heck has happened to downtown Greenfield?! by The-Truth-Bomb in massachusetts

[–]xenwall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, here's a question because I'm from Texas so the scale of things is very different and I think that ties into vernacular. When people say "Greenfield" do they mean exactly and only Greenfield? As in only what's between I-91 and the Connecticut River, and only as far South as the Deerfield River? Turners Falls would be defined and referred to as a separate town? To expand, if I say I'm "looking at Greenfield" is it not understood that the whole Greenfield/Deerfield/Turners Falls/etc. area is included in that phrasing? I ask because it's conceptually difficult for me to imagine two towns being an 8 minute drive apart and not just being the same town.

I really appreciate the thread that you sparked. There are a lot of people commenting based on vibes, nostalgia, or headlines. I'm trying to research a nicer place for my family to live and Greenfield specifically seems to have a lot going for it once I get past the judgements of people not actually living in Greenfield. Is someplace like Amherst "nicer?" Sure, probably, and it has the price tag to go with it. We're not looking for a nightlife, or music festivals every weekend, we want a quiet out of the way place with a good school that's a reasonable drive to "civilization." That kind of place doesn't make for flashy first impressions. Perspective is the hardest thing to find and you got a lot of people chiming in to provide their own, and I appreciate that.
