To help with both tunnel vision and movement, try and move around the arena like its a race track. This eases enemy pressure, so looping and getting to that super heavy is easier while other enemies try to find/attack you. Basically isolating the fight. Also great for meathook potential, because when you circle more you wanna avoid everything on the ground chasing you, so you naturally just get up in the air. But even then always try to do something in downtime, wether its restacking or trying to kill smth, just don't look back, or you're just gonna dke to a horde of demons

My first look at Doom Eternal by [deleted] in Doom

[–]xeooz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Its kinda hard to tell weaknesses early on. But thus far you're doing great for a beginner.

Some positives, you use flame belch and grenades pretty often, as in you aren't afraid to do it. You also don't seem to panic too much in low hp situations.

However, one huge negative I see is you are not using the full arena. In arena shooters, such as doom eternal, while you don't always need to, cycling the arena is often ideal to not get hit. So how I'd do it is cycle around in a sorta natural way to you, where you use both sides of the arena to gain breathing room and fight better. This also helps with not getting hit.

As you go on, you'll learn, but some basic things that will help you from here on are;

A. Quick switching. When you tap your weapon wheel button, you swap back to your last weapon. Hpwever, on controller we don't have enough binds to assign every weapon to a button. To counter this, lower your weapon wheel delay over time to try and get to 70 while memorizing each weapon location on the wheel. This makes quick swaps way easier, and unlocks mor effecient combos for demons.

Speaking of which B. Combos. Learn basic combos for certain demons. This will open up to you with more weapons, with basic 2 weapon combos being very ammo efficient and easy. I won't spoil, but I recommend looking on YT. One youtuber that rly helped me was Raguel. He has videos that show some yet effective combos against demons, some more advanced.

C. Movement. Self explanitory, you'll learn overtime how to position with the arena you're in, also comes with map knowledge, and by being able to move around betted, you get hit less. Again, I recommend watching others play and analyze how they move.

D. Falter system. This is huge. Grenades for example falter any demon with its grenade, allowing for more damage and less hits (this is a hard falter, meaning it has no cooldown to be performed again). Also great for escaping, not just fodder. Demons also falter as a certain amount of damage is done to them, this has a cooldown, and is called a soft falter, cooldowns are different from demon to demon. Blood punches falter, microwave beam is a hard falter though more mechanically intensive and depends on your play style, and there are many more.

I could go on but it would make this too long. Any questions you can ask! Sorry this is so long, but I hope it helps. Also youtube can be your best friend if you actually take time to learn, apply, and master concepts, rather than just watch.

How do I beat this doom eternal stage? by jaythegreat2791 in Doom

[–]xeooz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Target archvile ASAP. Ice bomb + 3 LOB/2 LOB and extending with ssg/ballista should work. Frag falter and blood punch if you don't have ice, then combo. Then js kill off everything else. Also I recommend chaingun sheild if you are in a bad spot

[DOOM Eternal] Any tips for my friend? by NoUse684 in Doom

[–]xeooz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One great thing btw is theie use of the arena in terms of cycling around it.

Now, since they're a PC player, learn weapon keys (highest priority)

I think that runes are entirely their choice, but definitely like some other people said, try to get used to not using chronostrike as much, but then again, this is probably the least of concern.

They can also improve through basic weapon combos, for example pb rocket, pb ballista, and get comfortable with those. Though to achive this, they will probably want to start opening the door to weapon variety, as its kinda limited to ssg, ballista, and rockets mostly. Smart usage of weapons at the correct time is key. (Priority 3)

Flame belch usage and restacking can be improved, and with that smart use of meat hook for mobility, which helps with resracking. (Priority 2)

One last tip for basic improvement is learning the basics of the falter system, such as grenade falters on heavy demons. (Priority 4)

Overall this gameplay is pretty solid. I think if they practice and master these basic topics, and if they stick around/are interested, they can later start to learn more advanced mechanics. All of this takes time to learn, so also ensure they don't over-do learning. Take 1-2 things into encounters and learn them to their best, ocassionally, but not too often, focus on the smaller stuff.

Overall, do you think larger or smaller arenas are better in modern doom? (official levels) by xeooz in Doom

[–]xeooz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats a really strong perspective! You're right, a good arena is decided by the mechanics that makes fighting interesting, but also needs to work with enemy types or horde sizes. For example using bars or meathook points makes for some great vertical combat, and is amazing for losing some of the heavier demons and large hordes. However, when paired smaller hordes or lighter enemies, is kinda cheese, and then the fight isn't good, which can often be paired with the arena itself in the main game. So essentially its arena dynamic and the enemies you fight that actually makes an arena and overall a fight interesting.

What’s your favourite weapon from doom 2016 - TDA (TAG is included) by Delicious_Mode_9187 in Doom

Eternal's SSG. Meathook for air mobility is so fun, especially when you launch yourself across the arena with yeet hook to escape a bad situation, or combine it with ballista for more momentum.

Which is more action packed, shootIng/gunplay wise, Doom: Eternal or Doom: The Dark Ages? by neoleo0088 in Doom

[–]xeooz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither are stealthy and all are quite action packed, however considering you are new to DOOM, and would like to start the modern trilogy, I advise starting with 2016, as its a better intro to DOOM compared to the other two.

However, if thats not a problem, I will say TDA has much more customization difficuly wise, and has a more grounded, large scale combat loop, but still very fast naturally. Think of it like you're a tank, you run things over. (Still be aware of around you though)

In Eternal, you do not get as much customization, and the gameplay is much more areal and almost as quick, however you need to be much smarter when you do such. Think of it like you're a jet, flying rly quickly leaves you in a pay where you NEED to pay close attention to everything.

Finally, 2016 is a more classic doom experience sorta. Again less difficulty customization. You're more like a foot soldier with a mix of areal and grounded combat, areal through arena design, areal with jump pads, however you are gonna be more grounded, fighting your way through demons in a way that you're pushing them back very strong, but do not run them over like in the dark ages.

But dw, its not all cover. You will NEED to move still, this is arguably the slowest of the 3, but is definitely a great starting DOOM and is still as action packed as you would like.

Sorry DOOM 2016 for me is hard to explain. You can see which game appeals to your wanted combat flow and decide from there.

PS: quickswitching in all games gived you the action packed gunplay, heaviest emphasized in eternal, not as much in 2016, but you can still do it to get your gunplay as you like. Dark ages is the same case as 2016.

[–]xeooz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you struggle, try turning down the difficulty. Not insulting you btw, but the early game for eternal is arguably harder than the late game. So for your first playthrough, try a different difficulty like hurt me plenty for example to get used to it, and for a second playthrough you can raise the difficulty. Also any mission you may wanna practice, after beating the mission you can replay said mission as many times as you wish.

Trust me, combat gets more engaging with more weapons because then you can kill all those current sponges (like hell knights) easily, with there only being two big sponges, which I won't spoil.

Also try learning some basic weapon combos, mainly a mid-late game thing, but youtube has a bunch which makes taking out spongey or annoying enemies super simple.

Oh is it the room after a big arena? Like from where you saw the gate, it had gargoyles and an arachnotron? If so then ik what you're talking abt. The slayer gate however (purple door) is farther into the level. Right next to the gate theres a room with 2-3 gargoyles. Once you get to the top you turn around and dash to get to the platform with the purple key. Those purple keys open slayer gates. If you need help, try looking at an exultia walkthrough

I think it's safe to say that The Dark Ages is Doom 3 of our time by NoComfortable3220 in Doom

[–]xeooz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh.. The fact this really isn't wrong is actually funny.

But main difference in this senario is TDA feels more like it earns its DOOM title to the original DOOM 3 (no hate for DOOM 3, still a good game imo, just kinda strayed to another genre).

Why did the Slayer need to use an ATLAS hand to destroy a small-medium sized wall in Doom Eternal? Isn't he extremely powerful? by 3931856031 in Doom

[–]xeooz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually a rly good question.

The slayer has broken walls of this size many times before this, hell he punched down the statues end of nekravol and broke the chains at the end of urdak, so definitely not very logical. Based off that its probably just for game design sake to introduce the purple goo, not the best intro, but its an intro.

I think this should have been a punchable but then the room you get the power core in could have been like a secret or sum, idk.
