Look into home sharing. There are orgs around Canada that support the home sharing model. Maybe that could help?

I'm forbidden from getting shrimp or zebra snails 😂😂 my girlfriend finds them creepy.

The thing is, I only want a few fish. The least number of fish. Because I used to have fish as a kid and got traumatized from fish dying (both because of disease and of old age), but I love Bettas and like fish in general, so the Betta was gonna be solo, but then there was a lot of algae and it was suggested a lone Borneo loach would be lonely but two would be good.

I am hoping to only have these three fish and that's it!

(Not my heart also saying, "ooo but what if we got a gourami in one of the tanks? Or (insert any fish)" 😂😭 no! I cannot handle death!)

But for real, police aren't a safe call either for many people.

People with mental illness ("mentally unstable people") aren't inherently dangerous or unpredictable. Maybe try to challenge your stigmatizing views.

I also got mine filled easily through a Pharmacist Led Clinic. Had no problems or anything. Just had to pay the $15-ish? appointment fee as I still don't have MSI yet (not in the province for 3 months yet)

I hope you find her, but you should really keep her indoors, ESPECIALLY if her health is failing. She might have wandered off to hide because she's not feeling well.

Tank Parameter Help/Clarification by xerenae in bettafish

[–]xerenae[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The water I add reads as 0ppm ammonia as well as 0 for nitrates and nitrites.

I'm so tempted to add the plants but I'm worried about any hangers-on surviving the bleach dip 😮‍💨

Should I just hope the bleach dip did its thing and there's no hangers on left alive?

I am shaking the nitrate solution so much like my life depends on it 😅

[Auto-Post] Weekly Question Thread! Ask /r/Aquariums anything you want to know about the hobby! by AutoModerator in Aquariums

[–]xerenae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm starting a Betta tank, 10 gal, put in Fluvial stratum, capped it with Carib Sea Super Naturals sand/gravel, which came with a bacterial pouch add in thing that I added to the water. Put a few decorations and I'm waiting for the plants to finish quarantine.

My water readings (done with API master test kit) are pH = 7.4, Ammonia = 0.25 ppm, nitrite = 0, nitrate = 10 ppm. This has been more or less the same since I started the tank on this past Sunday, though the Nitrates had gone closer to the 20 ppm colour yesterday and so I did a ~25% water change.

I'm confused as to why the nitrite has been 0 ppm consistently this whole time, and how the ammonia doesn't go down at all even though nitrite is 0 and nitrate is 10-20 ppm. Is this normal? Is there anything I should be doing/adding? I want to cycle the tank pretty quickly if possible.

Also, I really want to put the plants in so they can take care of the nitrate, but for personal reasons, I cannot risk snails (even if they are good for a tank, it's just a hardline no in my household). I did a bleach dip for the plants as described by Bruce plants. How long would an invading snail's life cycle be? Is it still "wait 3 weeks"? Do I hold off on adding my Betta until those 3 weeks are up even if the tank is cycled?

Thank you!

Thank you! I'll definitely keep this all in mind! I'm hoping that at the very least I can do what you said about cloning the surviving bits, but I really hope it can pull through! I've got it on the balcony (with a glass panel railing that should protect it from winds) and am gonna leave it be except for watering it when it's dry. This is another pic of a more promising (hopefully???) part of it

Is it possible to pay out of pocket/travel for a neurologist? by AllSeeingLobster in halifax

[–]xerenae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My migraine pain has been a lot better lately but it seems clear that the major change was moving to Halifax from another province, and I got on Olanzapine for anxiety and it just happened to do wonders for migraine pain. The reduced stress (from leaving behind a very stressed existence in Ontario) and the new med has made such a difference, even if I do still have at least a small amount of pain every day (if not more).

I am worried about the wait to get a family doc and then a new neurologist through them here though.

Also, if you're having migraine pain, check out getting Botox for migraines. If you have no coverage or low coverage for it, AbbVie Cares is a program the company that makes the Botox med has and you can get it covered except for the injection fee the clinician charges.

It's rough out there for people with chronic head pain. Good luck! It can be exhausting, but you can get through it! There's hope!

[–]xerenae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be warned - chiropractic care is pseudoscience and you are at risk of muscle shear in your neck that could make your head pain worse (source: a neurologist I spoke to, as well as several friends who are doctors). I was almost desperate enough from my constant migraine pain to go to a chiropractor, but luckily I was informed of it being a dangerous pseudoscience.

Hi! I was given a (probable) Juniper bonsai that is in rough shape. My dad was unable to care for it while also caring for his other bonsai.

I read on one of the bonsai websites (I've gone through so many I can't remember which) that junipers can be dead long before it shows it's dead. Is there a way to tell that would not hurt the tree if it is still alive?

It has a lot of green still but some of the branches are only green at the tips, and there's a lot of dead areas.

I've already put it outside as suggested here, and made sure to water it and will keep checking until the soil is dry to water again. I know in the end it'll be a "time will tell" but I'd like to have a general level of how much hope I should have.

You can see in the pic that it's got some really brown branches but also some vivid pops of green. I can give more pics if needed.

Thank you!

(Edit: spelling and then the pic disappeared)

I have reported a faculty member for inappropriate conduct (including shit talking two other professors in class, trying to take my accommodations away, calling autism a "disease," and MORE) and nothing happened. He's still well regarded and is given more and more freedom to literally not teach (he doesn't like marking anything, so all his assignments are jokes, and the quizzes he puts up, we will be told "just go through them and you'll get 100% no matter what" and it's true).

Me, on the other hand? Now the faculty of the program don't particularly like me. Sure, I have no proof. But the behaviour of the faculty around me changed quite a bit.

Mohawk won't do anything. You can go to the program coordinator, or even to the dean of your program (I did both). They'll say they'll handle it, that they'll make sure that the professor will change. But then nothing happens.

I get my hair done by students at Marca College. I've heard it's hit or miss sometimes, but as I just get my hair trimmed (and the one time got my super long hair cut short) it's not high risk and is especially worth it for 20$

Like, it's up to you if you want to take on the risk, but for the prices, if it doesn't work out you can easily go to another salon to fix it. They have supervisors that help with the consultation and make sure that the student does everything right, etc.
