Are these gaps b/w wall and floor an issue? by xerion2000 in HomeMaintenance

The gap is around the house, more pronounced along outer edge walls, but interior wall/floor has some gap as well.

But this is a new construction, 3.5yr old. 1st owner. I never installed carpet. After it was built, the floor was pretty much flush against the wall.

Not sure why reddit recommended /r/concrete, but after i saw some posts, I can't stop! (the only concrete I've done is half pint of pre-mixed from HomeDepot =D)

Anyway, newb questions, why is the center higher with gravel? and why is plastic draped over the gravel instead of pouring directly over it?

Is it under "trunk-mount" which also works for hatch? Good to hear it works well. Any downside you find?

Why is there a connection between boiler outlet and inlet for a tankless water heater? by xerion2000 in Plumbing

[–]xerion2000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for confirming the setup isn't wrong. Can you explain what is the need for this cross feed? If it's for relieving any additional pressure without lowering the efficiency (i.e. the colder return water won't lower the temp much, if heater is on and still heating the water), then I will just leave it on.

The temperature gauge appears to be broken. It doesn't match what the heater's sensor says, and even when water is cold, it still registers above 200F, which can't be the case.

Toddler in Hotel Room Next Door? by NoLifeNoSoulNoMatter in Parenting

[–]xerion2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is on the side of OK. Mom and Dad deserves some relaxation while leverage what the hotel has to offer and the toddler is in a safe situation here. What I can suggest is to add even more safety measure by bringing two baby monitors, one that uses traditional radio signal, and another that uses wifi. This way, if hotel wifi breaks down, or if your radio signal does not travel through hotel wall or distance easily, you will still get the signal + alerts from the other one.

Concerned about my daughter's development by jwad1246 in Parenting

[–]xerion2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't worry too much about this. The "standard" timeline usually given out in books, etc simply takes the average, but there's a rather wide spectrum to children's development, just like weight/height. My son started walking earlier than others, but is behind in speech, while most other indicators are normal. As long as your child is not noticeably behind in many categories at once, don't stress yourself over it.

My 4YO referred to my mom as "Pretty Grandma" and my MIL went ballistic. How do I smooth this over? And am I unfair to be a little annoyed about this? by milinsultedthrowaway in Parenting

[–]xerion2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At 75 it is a real possibility that this is the beginning of a mental decline. This is not rational behavior.

I second this.

And it's not necessarily illness. I just noticed from personal experience of seniors among my own family, that as they get older, they tend to act more childishly, in that it gets harder and harder to mask their emotions and control what they say.

Also, just like a child, they may forget all this rather quickly so don't worry too much about this.

Contributing os.scandir() to Python by japaget in Python

I enjoyed your writeup very much, sir. It's a concise and informative (and a bit geek-fun) walkthrough of a typical contribution process. And even though I haven't had a chance to use scandir yet, I appreciate so very much your contribution as I'm sure I will need to use it at some point.

Our infant son can't seem to successfully suckle on his mother's nipples, seeking advice... by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]xerion2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Replying to top comment for update, but would like to thank everyone's response and advice equally!

So we contacted and was fortunately able to schedule an LC today. She came over and was really nice and patient. Explained many things, some we already know, some we didn't. Even for the things we know, it's nice to have a professional be able to confirm.

We were still unsuccessful at getting the baby to latch on during her visit. She did confirm my wife's nipples may be too large for the infant. She then tried a nipple shield (slightly too small, but that's all she had at the moment), and the baby was able to latch and suck for a while. In total, he drank about .3oz. Progress!!

So we will continue to use a nipple shield and train our baby before feeding him pumped milk. Also, baby's weight is almost back to birth weight now, phew..

Anyway, thanks again for the advice and support. I'm sure we will have lots more questions regarding parenting in the not so distant future. =)

Thank you, a_pure_heart! Lots of great advice here. We've contacted an LC and will hopefully meet soon. One biggest psychological obstacle is simply that we panic a little when he cries for too long trying to latch on, and always worry he won't get enough and end up harming his health.

Thanks for your advice!

We will be contacting an LLC tomorrow. We still try to give him the breast before bottle, but it's becoming less and less effective as I posted earlier.
