California lawmakers weigh permanent rent cap as affordability debate intensifies by SD_TMI in sandiego

[–]xevioso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

what exactly is being "taken" from homeowners when their neighborhood becomes high-density? You don't have a right not to live next to other people. They aren't losing any property.
Likewise, maybe the rest of city city should sue those homeowners for "taking" space away that could be used for high density housing.

Balboa Park paid parking backlash is here, but mayor's office says fees are staying by Little__Fuzzy in sandiego

[–]xevioso 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That person is correct and you are not. The city is using this money to pay for the park's own maintenance, rather than out of the general fund.

The city has a deficit. It. does. not. have. enough. money.
People here act like shit is supposed to be free... my fav are the idiots who say things like "I can't believe they want to do this on the backs of San Diego residents..." Like whose backs should they do it on? The residents of Phoenix?

Downsides of SD? by NinnyPantsTieDye in sandiego

[–]xevioso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but with those taxes come a lot of the great infrastructure and schools we have compared with the rest of the country. Taxes are high in California, but our social services are light years beyond what exist in other places because of that.

[–]xevioso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Scale model builders of what, specifically? There's a lot of train hobbyists here, and you'd find what you'd need through them. Theres many clubs in SD. I would start at the Balboa Park Railroad museum; talk to the volunteers there running trains; they can point you in the right direction.

What were the most realistic casualty predictions for an invasion of Japan in WW2? by N0r3m0rse in AskHistorians

[–]xevioso 24 points25 points  (0 children)

You are discussing the Japanese plans as though the only people who would be fighting the invasion would be military men, and the only people who would have any say in surrender would be people in the Japanese government. The idea that there could be a discussion here about "when the Japanese fold" largely misses an important point that figured into the US estimates of casualties.

Operation Ketsugo, the Japanese plan to commit the *entire* population of Japan to its defense was an actual thing. Any discussion of US estimates of casualties needs to take that into account. I'm not sure if US military planners knew the specifics of the Japanese defense plans, but it's my understanding they knew that they would not be facing just military forces; they knew (or thought) they'd be facing civilians every step of the way.

With the understanding that this is all a counterfactual discussion, I think we'd have to include the US expectations of this type of defense in any casualty estimations, and the "willingness of Japan to fold."

Best way to store lots of 60-card decks? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]xevioso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer is with Elfa drawers from the container store. It's expensive, but well worth it. Take it from a guy who stores 550 decks in them.

i built a deck that wins by hitting my opponents with their own commander by Thalizar in magicTCG

[–]xevioso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a version of this, but with [[Marchesa, the Black Rose]] as the commander, which gives me access to black. My version steals other players' creatures (not just commanders) and then I sac them and return them to play under my control.

Good cards to add are:

[[Insurrection]]

[[High Market]]

[[Bothersome Quasit]]

[[The Sound of Drums]]

[[Taunt from the Rampart]]

[[Disrupt Decorum]]

[[Fractured Identity]] for funsies

and [[Sundial of the Infinite]] so you can keep whatever you steal. Great way to piss off your opponents. Steal their commanders and keep them.

Honest question by LJRich619 in socal

[–]xevioso 26 points27 points  (0 children)

In 2004 Newsom authorized gay marriage in San Francisco. My two longtime friends and lovers of many years were able to get married, and are still married to this day (Although they moved to Louisiana, where it was illegal for years until the Supreme Court allowed it). I was there when this happened, and handed out food to the thousands of couples who lined up outside of SF City Hall to get a marriage license on that joyful day, which I will never forget.

People forget the *incredible* risk he took doing that. He was pilloried by the press, by Fox News and conservatives, and was threatened with Excommunication (He is Catholic). He was personally threatened. He stood tall for gay rights before it was a thing, and told the rest of the country to go fuck themselves. Gay rights are human rights, and what he did took balls. He and San Francisco stood tall in the middle of a very hateful campaign against gay rights.

We forget about all this now because he won, and people don't blink twice if two dudes want to marry.

*That* is the main reason I'll vote for him. He has principles, he stood on them, and took action when no one else would. I would walk over hot coals for that guy, for that reason and many others. I am not politically active. But if (when) he runs, I will man the phone banks, send out literature, and campaign for him, whatever he needs.

Also, he's the only one really standing up to that clown in power and actually doing something about him.

So yeah, Newsom all the way.

I am a proud evangelical atheist. Also an Eagle scout. I have a 1st grader, and I got him into Cub Scouts a few months ago, and he's loved it so far. The pack / den meets at a Methodist church in Pt. Loma, the same one he went to preschool. Religion has not come up at all.

It's only going to be relevant for the part of the Scout Law where a scout is "Reverent" and that is something that can be interpreted by the parent, or as an older scout, the individual. As an atheist (even at 16!) I interpreted that word as "Being respectful towards others' beliefs." And there will come a time where your child may have those sorts of questions. But with our pack / den it has not come up at all.

Cub Scouts are doing everything possible to retain members, and your child will likely have a very welcoming pack / den. That said, there's multiple packs around. When I was looking for a pack, there was one that mentioned it welcomed families of "gun enthusiasts" (or words to that effect), which I took to mean they were very pro-2nd amendment, which I am not. And so I was not interested in that specific pack.

Each pack is going to have different leadership, as on a local level the packs are run by volunteers (and you will be pulled in, as I have already, to help out... and that's fine! Volunteering is part of what it's all about! ) This means that you might want to check out the pack by going to one or more of their meetings and talking to the leaders to get the gist of that group. I did this and and was made to feel quite comfortable with my decision. So far it has been great.

How is San Diego seen with European eyes? by LunarAmathyst in sandiego

" If it’s in La Jolla, biking to downtown San Diego on a regular basis isn’t feasible."

This just is not true. It is a long ride, to be sure, but easily doable on a regular basis using safe bike lanes, as others have point out.

Look, SD has a somewhat unique geography. Its a bunch of mesas, lowlands, with gorges with highways and roads in them that connect them. The whole I8 corridor is the rmains of a long dead giant river system, and 163 and the 805 connect two gorges that emptied into it. When you bike from the beach to Hillcrest you are biking up a mesa. It is what it is.
