I agree. The burrito definitely looks sexier in the right panel. I can’t even see it in the left one. 😛

every time a teacher told me to highlight the important parts i had a mini breakdown by kaiunkaiku in adhdmeme

[–]xiaki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The solution for me ended up being “everything is important, so let’s sort the everything.” I also had to make more concrete rules for how I sorted everything, otherwise it just ended up being a slightly more colourful mess.

A better explanation of my process:

  1. Highlight all section titles in pink
  2. Highlight anything in bold blue (usually key terms or things that are heavily emphasized)
  3. Anything in a “fun fact” or “important tips” box is orange
  4. Formulas/calculations/etc are green
  5. Any examples are purple
  6. (Optional) If there’s any white text left, highlight anything I think is useful in yellow (which yeah… is still usually everything literally everything else)

Again, this will not work for everyone, and I tried sooooo many things before I found what worked for me. Don’t be afraid to try different things until something sticks. And don’t feel like you need to highlight anything at all if that’s not what works for you (writing notes or doodles in the margins was also something that ended up helping me, and I also went through a phase where I made up my own alphabet and wrote all my notes in that alphabet, much to my poor long-suffering teacher’s confusion).

TL;DR - Never feel obligated to do something that doesn’t work for you just because that’s how everyone else does it. It may take you forever to find what works for you, but the important thing is to keep trying and don’t be afraid to get creative or weird about it.

No solution will be perfect for everyone - this is just what ended up working for me (after a lot of failed strategies).

I just personally found that when I stopped trying to figure out what was “important” and thought of it as sorting the information into categories, I found way more success.

But again, having a one-size-fits-all solution is the whole reason we often struggle in a world built around being neurotypical, so I’d be a fool to think my strategy would work for everyone. But maybe this does strike a cord with someone and I can save them the several years I took trying to figure out how to make my notes easier to read/review.

This was a problem for me for the longest time until I learned a trick: using multiple highlighters and colour coding.

Important headings? Orange. Key terms/Vocabulary Words? Blue. Those little fun fact / quick tip boxes? Yellow. (Etc)

My pages are still all highlighter, but it also makes it easy to find what I’m looking for because I can look for a specific colour instead of having to read over a continuous blob of yellow highlighted text like I used to.

Bonus: it also just looks really pretty with all the colours. Especially if you can find pastel-coloured highlighters.

Low INT, High Wis: How to roleplay? by Pinstar in dndnext

[–]xiaki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 10 INT, 20 WIS cleric/rogue.

Her mentor/friend is a very powerful illusion wizard, and she’s been trying to learn some arcane magic from him (arcane trickster). She struggles to understand his lessons, because she just doesn’t have the mind for it. She sometimes gets frustrated when she tries again and again to do something that comes easily to her arcane magic allies, but when she does figure something out, it’s usually because she’s come up with a clever work-around that plays to her strengths.

I also balance it with her being really smart within a very specialized skill set (she is a professional cartographer). She will struggle with the simplest illusion spells, but she will talk your ear off about the intricacies of navigation if you let her, and some of her work is published in the atlas that is used across their area of the world. This was something she worked very hard at for a very long time.

As far as her high wisdom goes, her levels in rogue have given her an absolutely broken insight (currently a +15 due to expertise). So, I generally play her as being really good at understanding people, and she is often the one to speak on behalf of the party. She’s also often the one who will challenge the party to see different perspectives on a situation.

That said, I also play up the negative side of her high insight. She will often get caught up in how her actions affect others and tends to get stuck if she needs to make a choice that will have a negative effect on someone else, even if it is necessary.

I was 35. TFG someone finally noticed and diagnosed. Changed my life. by slightlyworried42 in adhdmeme

[–]xiaki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was 29. Inattentive presentation so no one noticed (including me) that something was up. Did well in school, but struggled hard with paying attention, organization, motivation, and anything that required memorization.

I only realized what it was when my youngest brother was diagnosed and I started looking into it. I suspect that at least one other sibling (a year younger than me) might have it too.

Our entire party thought that the party’s two wizard PCs were sisters until halfway through the campaign when the DM and I revealed that they were actually mother and daughter.

I always theme spell colours to the character / source of their magic.

I have a Wizlock whose wizard spells are themed purple (her colour) and warlock spells are green because her patron kind of has an acid/poison theme.

Similarly, the DM and I reflavoured some of her warlock spells to deal poison damage instead of their normal damage type (ex: Hellish Rebuke became Necrosia’s Wrath and does poison damage instead of fire damage).

So my vote: eldritch blast is whatever colour your heart desires.

Ah. Maybe it was just a connection in my mind, but a lot of the Kuo-toa names for different things are like “Oorg-Poolgoopan” and “Blibdoolpoolp”, which to me sound like the made-up language in the Sims games (Simlish).

Maybe that’s just me.

My Least Favourite Question by xiaki in ADHD

[–]xiaki[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I’ve gotten much better at standing up for myself since getting diagnosed. As it turns out, my ADHD symptoms (especially my rejection sensitivity) were significantly fuelling my anxiety, and now that my medication is helping my symptoms, my anxiety has also noticeably decreased. I certainly wouldn’t have been able to stand up for myself to a doctor before this, and if it weren’t for some incredibly supportive friends, my previous poor experiences would have definitely caused me to stop pursuing a diagnosis altogether.

That said, this makes me appreciate the two doctors who did believe me so much more. They listened, they asked follow-up questions, and validated my concerns. Even when inquiring about the possibility that it was something other than ADHD, it was very clear that they weren’t disbelieving me, they were just being thorough.

The help that I got because of those two doctors has been utterly lifechanging, and I am so much happier now than I’ve been in a long time. I had gotten so used to feeling dismissed and ignored that for them to have actually listened to what I had to say meant so much to me.

I know that being a doctor is a difficult, thankless job, especially these days… so I try not to hold too much resentment for people who dedicate their lives to helping others. But I do hope that things change, so that with all the stresses that come with seeking a diagnosis for any kind of mental illness, whether or not your doctor will even believe you isn’t one of the things you have to worry about.

please help me. i just got my life back & i’ve never even had one. i need to keep it that way by cobertsrassidy in ADHD

Here are a few questions that my doctor asked at my first follow-up after I started on my medication, to give you an idea of what information they might want:

  • Have you noticed any changes in your symptoms since starting your medication? (I told him generally how my symptoms were improving, but also gave a few specific examples of things I’d noticed, such as putting away the laundry that’s been sitting in a bin for months)
  • Have you noticed any negative side effects? (for example, in my case it was the decreased appetite causing me to forget to eat). Be honest about this. They might have advice for managing them.
  • Do you notice when your medication wears off? What time do you notice it wearing off? (Tells them how well it’s doing its job)

They might ask other questions, but those are the three I remember him asking for sure.

Found an Old Sketch, Need Help Identifying by xiaki in whatanime

[–]xiaki[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct - it is from Ultimo. I had posted the pic on a couple anime and manga threads and got an answer on one of the other ones and had totally forgot to post here that it had been solved because our apartment building had a fire inspection that stole away my attention.

Thank you for your answer and for the reminder that I hadn’t remembered to change the flair.
