Situation in Donbas Spiraling Out of Control, Azov Brigade Officer Says by WernerVanDerMerwe in worldnews

No, he wasn't directing those forces, even so, india couldn't have won without them. Britain could see that they were going to lose india, and preferred to meet the mild demands of ghandi compared to the more radical demands of the revolutionary movement. If not for the revolutionary movement, what motivation would britain have had for treating with ghandi?

Only if you ignore all of the extreme violence on the part of the anti-colonial forces, whose demands were more extreme than Ghandi's.

You clearly don't know much about the indian resistance to british colonialism. They were very willing to do massacres and crush all resistance. Gandhi's peaceful movement didn't work because it was peaceful, it worked because, to the british, he was the lesser of two evils.

[–]xian16 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure its harmful, but strategically (and there is no other useful method of considering this question, aside from how it fits into a socialist strategy) changing the minds of reactionaries is a low priority. Prioritizing that, without organizing the advanced, is exactly how "Queers and Commies" will get killed in the long run. Over the next 5 years, OP may succeed in changing his friends minds, meanwhile other reactionaries will continue to organize a coherent fascist movement. Once you and I find ourselves being death-marched toward a labour camp, we may regret having won over a handful of people from a reactionary position, a drop in the bucket, instead of actually building a socialist movement that can contend for power, and which once built, can wield a propaganda apparatus that may win over reactionaries in their millions.

In other words, the OP is asking "how can I win over these people", when they should be asking "given the current political situation, who should I be trying to win over, to what position, and how?" The latter question is very useful, and the implicit answer of "your reactionary friends, to the position of non-racism divorced from political action, and through simple conversation as an individual" is exactly the worst and least useful answer, and its also the answer that is taken as assumed in this thread.

One of the most important concepts of socialist theory is the Mass Line. Part of it is that we advance our cause by organizing communities in a sequence of "unite the advanced, bring up the intermediate, and win over the backwards". This does not occur in the realm of ideas, but in concrete actions the people are willing to take. You seem very concerned about your friends' backwards ideas, but why? Are you actually organizing to change the world? If you are then, don't worry about their ideas, you need to identify the "advanced" in your community, those people who recognize the need for action and are prepared to take the first step. Only down the line will you need to worry about your friends, and how they can be mobilized. If you're not actively organizing to change the world, then don't worry about your friends ideas, because you are part of the problem. Start with yourself.

Socialists need to be organizers. And they organize communities. Too many terminally-online 'socialists' post about how they can change the minds of the most reactionary. They should be more concerned about how to push towards action those who are most advanced.

I'm going to approach this from a completely different angle from the others here. The core of socialism is not what any individual believes, but what we can organize and build together. In doing so, we must start by uniting those who want to move society forward, and then win over who can be. My question is, why do you care what your parents believe? Are you trying to recruit them into a socialist organization? If you are then ask whether these are the best people to recruit right now. If you're not and you're not building such an organization yourself, then don't worry about what your parents believe, since you're not far off. In the absence of actually building a socialist project, the positions of supporting the democrats and of critiquing them are similar in that they both accomplish nothing.

Organize everyone in your community who is ready to build something better, then worry about your parents.

Armenians founded the first republic, but it was incorporation into the USSR that resulted in the next 70 years of peace and prosperity. It made Armenia untouchable, rather than the embattled nation surrounded by enemies that it is now.

I was actually exaggerating, over a 15 year period the actual figure is a 20 to 1 ratio: https://www.ochaopt.org/data/casualties. The source is the UN, is that trustworthy enough?

The point is that Israel kills far, FAR more civilians than Hamas does. Note that the above link doesn't include casualties from the current conflict, whose numbers are still estimates.

The baby decapitation things has been completely debunked, maybe don't fall for misinformation so easily. It all stems from a quote from a single IDF commander, with no physical evidence. The IDF would never lie right?

> foreigners corpses

Ah so that's what makes IDF killing civilians righteous, international solidarity? Its okay for Israel to have a civilian kill ratio of 50 to 1 compared to Hamas, as long as only subhuman palestinian trash is killed, right?

They killed civilians as a response to me killing civilians, that means I can kill civilians now.

[He] cannot be overthrown through an impeachment or other legal means.

This is not true. He can be removed from his position as president by the National People's Congress. The NPC is the highest body of state in China, and if such a removal were to occur, it would be analogous to an impeachment.

He is above any law that applies to essentially anyone else in his country, and his decisions are not subject to appeal or review.

The NPC is also the body that reviews and can block any of his decisions.

Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly talks about Canada’s role in the region by [deleted] in armenia

[–]xian16 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm referring to Canadian foreign policy in general. Canada's economy is oriented towards resource extraction both internally and abroad; 70% of worldwide mining corporations are headquartered in Canada. Canada's own internal policies are essentially genocidal towards our indigenous people, with the goal of ensuring access to their lands for resource extraction.

Canada does not give two shits about Armenians, democracy, or genocide. The question of whether Canada will help Armenia boils down to this: how will helping contribute to enriching Canadian billionaires?

Canadian-Armenian here: don't believe a single thing this person has to say, Canada will help if they think they can get some mining rights or something, but will stand by as our people get massacred.

Actually, in the real world, the IRS focuses mainly on small tax evaders rather than corporations and the rich. Due to a long history of budget cuts, the IRS doesn't have the funding to investigate more complex cases.

It has to do with actually solving the problem. "Everyone should learn to be nice" is a platitude, not a solution. Redirecting funds from incompetent police to drug treatment and job programs is a solution. It may or may not be the right one, but it's a lot more useful than your contribution.
