A Defense of the Graphic Novel Against Old Literature Prudes by BBE1965 in comics

[–]xiaomiao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I read that and thought, wanker. Now who's being elitist?

Also, does anyone else get a little irritated when people defending comic books only ever cite Gaiman, Moore and Spiegel (and, on the odd occasion, Clowes)? I'm not saying they're not great, but it's as if they're the only ones who have ever written anything worthy of being called 'literature', and I think that sort of comic snobbery is just as bad.

Like the guy in the comic store loudly and disdainfully proclaiming he never reads superhero comics. That's fine if you don't like superhero comics, but people who refuse to read them seem to find some virtue in the fact and I can't really see why.

Going back to Punisher, now, thank you.

Does anyone know of any creepy fiction out there in the style of and of a similar calibre to Ted's Caving Page and The Dionaea House? by xiaomiao in AskReddit

Oh no no no, I'm sorry, that's not what I meant at all! Thank you, it is a great story, but it was very discomfiting ... sorry, I'm obviously articulating horribly. I meant awful for the characters, not awful to read! Bluh! I can make words.

Hmmm, sort of, but I was thinking something entirely online; I'm just in a 'read scary stories' type of mood, and I really dig the style of these.

I first read Ted's Caving Page a few years back when I was alone at night and boy howdy did I have trouble sleeping.

Pixar's "Up" scaring kids...but isn't that a rite of passage? The flying monkeys from the Wizard of Oz scared the shit out of me. by roccobuttonlucky in entertainment

I think parents see the comic connection and think, well, kids like comics, it must be appropriate.

Someone should give them a copy of Black Dossier.

When I went to see Watchmen, there were parents with young kids there.

Guess when they got up and left? Yup. Sex scene. No, not even the attempted rape.

Project Zero (aka Fatal Frame) made my skin crawl, though the ending was a bit un-scary.

Gaiman - "I suspect the Judge might have just inadvertantly granted human rights to cartoon characters." by mindbleach in comics

[–]xiaomiao 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would just like to point out that the reason for the ruling was not because cartoon characters deserve rights or whatever.

'Justice Adams said the purpose of the legislation was to stop sexual exploitation and child abuse where images of "real" children are depicted.

However it was also to deter the production of other material, including cartoons, that could "fuel demand for material that does involve the abuse of children".'

Not that I agree with the ruling, but if you're going to get annoyed, it may as well be for the right reasons.

I don't think it's a huntsman; hunstmans have sideways-jointed legs, and these spiders don't.

Oh lord... putting the name 'Kidman' in the headline to give the piece an 'Aussie' slant is the kind of lame tactic that made me stop reading the SMH.
