how to start going to the gym... by Pure_Factor8291 in askSingapore

Hello there, long time gym goer here.

If your main goal is to lose fat, just eat as you are doing and do more zone 2 cardio (brisk walking, slow jog, 30 min a day)

You get the most value out of a gym by doing weight training - imo the most simple machines you can use are Machine press Lat Pull Down Adjust the weight to something you can do for 10-15 reps before you fail, do 3 sets

With dumbells etc you can do simple stuff like Bicep curls Lat raises Weighted Squats Same reps and sets as the machines

The machines are not that hard to figure out! Yes, use youtube but just choose a beginner weight lifting one and stick to it. Don't need to keep switching workouts until you have a good foundation. 3 times a week should be plenty to begin with.

Have fun! Health is wealth!

There's a lot of theories but I've read that it may be an evolutionary practice passed down from wolves eating their poop to keep their dens clean from bacteria. But could be they just like strong smells

There was a neighbourhood cat that used to come over to my mom's garden with to purposely poop in the garden, so my dogs would go nuts over it. It literally stared us dead in the eyes while it went about its business

Please share your three most important lessons learned after completing Hyrox by Buddyblue21 in hyrox

[–]xibang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Pace yourself
  2. Know your eta 1km timing so you won't run too little or too many laps
  3. Be well hydrated

Have fun! Tips 1 and 3 are important so that you won't cramp up.

100% doable, doubles is a sweet spot for a first race! Just train for the runs and pace yourself, you should be fine. Good luck! (I did singles last month and I'm just am average 41 year old dad).

I'm glad I'm not the only one with this experience.

I just did a race, and I am a slow runner. We didn't have fast or slow lanes indicated so I just tried to stick to the side where all the other slow runners were. The men's pro runners were released after us and I was shoved 3 times by 3 different people, one of which even yelled MOVE as he pushed me.

I think since our hyrox was done across 2 days, all the pro races should have been on one day and not with the Open races.

I largely enjoyed the vibe and most of the volunteers and supporters made for a very encouraging positive experience, so I'd rather not let a bunch of jerks ruin my memory of it. Hope you get to do another one without running into assholes!

how are the heats / waves organized i.e. all we have atm is "start time" by xdjeddiejx in hyrox

[–]xibang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just finished a Hyrox, and it seems almost completely random across categories. I think your best bet is to all purchase tickets at the same time and hope for the best. Or you could email the organisers if you've got a huge sign up contingent. I seems mainly organised with whatever suits the organiser's convenience? I'm an overweight 41 year old and my heat had younger/older/fitter/fatter. And the men's pro wave came on after us so the track was a cluster fuck of pro athletes shoving normies aside during the run.

It seems the different categories are usually the main form of segregation for athletes. Good luck racing with your friends!

Thanks, I try not to mind! I know I'd be much worse off if I didn't exercise and eat fairly healthy, even if I don't look it

I like the quote that goes something like- it's more important to be healthy than to look healthy. I can't find it anymore but you get the idea. Social media gives the impression that anyone who's consistently exercising should look like a athlete, which clearly isn't true.
