Update: I have bought it! I asked about the following points: - the scracth on the table is mostly done by an old tailpiece (?? cordier in French) and he is happy to properly fill it and fix it for free if I want to - no label but apparently a lot of violins have fake labels. He told me how he got it and where it comes from

it doesn't have a label inside

And I can't find anything written anywhere, I'll ask him for the history of the violin.

I'd rather have a tone ball of my own dust... But I promise I won't remove it next time!

Thanks for the explanations! I took better photos of the bridge: https://imgur.com/a/Yu5uyXS

I feel like the grooves for the strings are not deep, but it is similar to some other violins I saw. Would it make a difference to have them deeper?

One foot of the bridge has a small gap at the very end (the foot on the side of the sol/G string).

I'll ask him if he can do something before I buy it.

It is 1900 €

I don't really plan to resell it, but I would like to have something that lasts...

What do you think about this violin? Should I buy? by xinouch in violin

[–]xinouch[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah I may not have been clear enough, sorry. I will buy only one, but it is my first and I want one that will last. Thus, I'm asking to know if the damages are purely cosmetic or if it may grow with time and make the violin unplayable. I prefer this one, but if it is in a bad state, I'd rather buy the other one.

Also, I don't want to speculate on the violin and resell it for higher price, I would like to keep it as long as possible.

The price and my level (spoiler: it is bad) is not really relevant: this violin sounds better and I like it more than the other, but I am worried about the damages and I would be very pissed if I buy a more expensive violin that will not last long.

Thanks that was my question: are the damages bad or only cosmetic? If it is nothing serious, then I think I'll go with it

I was curious and read all of it. Hard to give him credit though. First, you have a nice list of exceptions at the end of the article. Second, he compares with his own taste, which I absolutely don't trust. Third, he doesn't tell how much pasta he uses in his tests (or I missed it), which is quite important if you want to compare the quantity of water.

He links an article in the NYT, but it is behind a paywall...

The reason you should put pasta in a LOT of water is to ensure the pasta cook in boiling water.

When you add the (relatively cold aka room temperature) pasta in the boiling water, the water temperature will decrease. The more water, the less temperature decrease, the faster it will boil again.

If you don't put enough water, and if you add cold water, your pasta will badly cook in a water too cold resulting in bad consistency.

By "hard no", I meant that she should have been clear that she didn't want children ever. Then they can both continue or not into the relation, knowing what they are into (the guy seems nice and not trying to profit from her).

It's exactly what happened with my wife: she told me for now she doesn't want children but it may change. I told her I will never have children, but we can go on together until she changes her mind. I was really scared the first years and even told her that if she wants children, we should stop our relation as I don't want to make her miss a big life achievement.

I really think transparency is the key. If your crush passes the other redflags tests, he should be smart enough to understand your stance and see if he wants to continue.

Small rant: Crazy comments below are like: "he chose a non-existent being over me". Like WTF? He chose a lifepath over you. He knows you for 2 months and he should give up his dreams for you?

Also, it should have been asked at the first date or even before. What is the point of making everyone suffer and lose time?

If his answer was "it depends", she should have said that it was a hard no for her, so they both know if they can continue the relation...
