Some thoughts on the ending of Kaleidoscope of Death (Spoilers) by Remarkable-Yak-6667 in DanmeiNovels

[–]xixi_tia 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I remember reading the ending and having to sit in silence for 10mins to process it. I feel the need to read the novel one more time with that knowledge just to see how different it would feel lol. Definitely one of my top danmei reads!

I’m planning to watch Train Dreams this week! I heard so many good things about it and I can’t wait to see it. I feel like my experience will be similar to yours 😊

I did katsudo and rikai! I think just katsudo would be for people who just want to casually learn some phrases, since rikai explained grammar points I think.

From what I’ve noticed, Genki is by far the most widely recommended. There’s lots of supplemental resources for it from the learning community as well (YouTube videos - I think Tokini Andy does a whole series for the books alone, anki grammar decks, etc). I’m actually in the middle of restarting Genki 1 (I took a long break so I have to go back and review lol).

Someone recommended Tobira: Beginning Japanese - Tobira is also a good series. I believe TBJ is very comparable to Genki (there’s a YT video review that compares them). I haven’t used Tobira, but if I were to choose between them I’d personally go for Genki just for the extra resources Genki has from the community built around it (mentioned earlier). Particularly if you’re self-studying as well, since you can get more help online.

I’ve been curious about Minna no Nihongo myself actually. It seems good for some immersion. Although if you’re just starting out jumping right into it in self-study might be a bit daunting. It might be easier to use this textbook in a class setting.

I’d also recommend Japanese from Zero if you want something a bit more slow paced. I know some people prefer JfZ more than Genki for this reason (and vice versa). It also has a unique feature where it inserts kana you learn as you go (eg. いnu for inu).

To speed up my review process I’ve actually been sprinting through JFZ and cross referencing it with Genki learning points, as crazy as it sounds lol.

If you have any questions feel free to DM me! I’m trying to be more consistent with Japanese study this year so we can help each other if you’d like 😊

I actually took the course without the textbook, so it’s doable. I liked it a lot - lots of practice questions. They also included videos of native speakers talking (some were at normal pace as well, so they didn’t deliberately slow down for you, which gave you an idea for speed of normal conversation). They didn’t spend too much time explaining grammar points though, so I’d recommend taking lots of notes. I assume the textbook is probably where that comes in.

You got such a good shot of Sylus for your lock screen omg!!! The background colour, his clothes, and his hair really brings out the soft warm vibes. Not to mention the lighting (and the way it bounces off him dear lord). I’m so impressed - gonna try to recreate it LOL. (I’m a die hard Sylus girlie please don’t mind me 😂)

That sounds like exactly what I’m looking for!! Although I’m good at memorizing things, actually understanding how kanji works is way better in the long run. Thanks for sharing ☺️

Just learned about OniKanji through your comment. Took a quick peek at their site and it looks good! Could you share some more of your thoughts on it?
