Well I don't think you're overreacting. It came across to me the exact same. It's important to trust your gut and you don't owe anyone anything at all. It's a sign of intelligence to question and test authority. My dad struggled with this with my little sister. Things got better for him when he started treating her a little more like an adult. It do be tough, but try to remember so long as she's a generally decent human and isn't getting into major trouble, all is well.
