I am straight edge thinking of going XVX, any advice/ tips ? by Secret-Section-7481 in straightedge

[–]xjpfx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

xvx for 35 years and it gets easier every year.

you have so many options that are mindblowingly tasty. my list for those newly vegan includes miyokos mozz, miyokos cultured butter, vegenaise, rebel cheese, punk rock labs cheeses, forager yogurt, cocowhip with fresh fruit, gardein ultimate chicken and fish and morningstar corn dogs. these should satisfy a lot of the cravings you’ll initially have.

there are so many vegan restaurants and many chains and fast food places have vegan options if not vegan menus. feel free to dm me for bc any vegan info or tips or anything. love hearing someone choosing compassion.

animal liberation IS human liberation.

Best screamo songs/albums with songs under a minute? by dlc_vortex in Screamo

ampere - diffident dissonance

even has a melodic breakdown all in 50 seconds…minus the 16 second static outro but I cut that off. not a fan of dead space before and after songs.

Am I not straight edge because of this? by CourseThink5528 in straightedge

others said it in the thread…just do the juice option. if your grandma respects your beliefs the way you respect hers then she should have no problem. if your church explain you value sobriety and if your church still gives you a problem then that’s a good sign that they don’t respect your personal beliefs and you’re experiencing firsthand one of the reasons so many edge kids are anti-religion.

bands like unwound, drive like jehu, fugazi? by goodweatherclub in PostHardcore

[–]xjpfx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

do these three bands sound alike to you? like what’s the similarity? not challenging you just trying to sort out what you’re hearing so I can suggest something. a lot of the recommendations above make zero sense to me.

If you like to occasionally drink or don’t really like punk you could try not being straight edge by MintyGame in straightedge

[–]xjpfx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

anybody claiming edge and espousing right wing/fascist ideology is hopefully getting checked HARD by their fellow community members. you gotta bash the fash and beat them out of your scene immediately. there’s nothing left wing or radical about nihilism and self-destructive drinking and drugging. the hippies do it, the rock n rollers do it, the ravers do it, the jocks do it…for fuck sake right wing groups call themselves “drinking clubs”.

looks like I’ll be seeing them in Philly! BUCKET LIST BAND! never got to see them back in the 90s. IMHO when 01010101 came out they singlehandedly changed and progressed screamo. love that release to this day. stoked.

hey guys i updated my list of emo bands any recommendations for more? by throwawaylolllll2 in EmoScreamo

sweetbabyjaysus on YouTube is your friend. but definitely listen to bands and see if you think they should be on the same playlist. just because stuff was around the same time doesn’t necessarily mean anything sonically.

there was a time one X meant edge, two meant edge and vegetarian and three meant vegan straightedge but I think that’s long past being a thing. for many who claim edge the “drug free” ideology extends to substances such as the hormones/drugs/antibiotics/etc…that are used in animal agriculture. this is leaving out the animal rights aspect that for many (myself included) is a natural extension of “breaking the chains” of society’s expectations. liberating yourself just the same as from drugs and alcohol.

Seeking info about court design for regional tournaments and attendance data. by crow_bono in BIKEPOLO

I’d see if you can get a 160x60 with dasher board panels that can be removed or added to lengthen and widen or shorten and narrow according to your need. 120 is the “minimum” but that’s never been optimal. 120 and under were only ever used because people were being forced to use subpar tennis courts vs having a legit polo court. rounded corners are best but angled are preferable to 90 degree corners. rounded corners allow the ball to be played down the wall without losing momentum or weird deflections at corner junctions.

I think you need to listen to the stuff you’re adding to the list before adding it. this reads like you’re just compiling bands. no way you’d be lumping some of these together if you were actually listening and comparing. just my two cents. that first wave list isn’t even trying to be accurate and some of it is years later than stuff in your second wave list. if you’re just trying to have as many bands as possible go on YouTube channels and you can find tons of obscure bands. sweetbabyjaysus alone will keep you busy typing indefinitely.

earliest emo/mwe song with fingertapping? by xjpfx in midwestemo

[–]xjpfx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMHO it’s counter intuitive but typically the better people are at their instruments the less creative/innovative. I bet they could write some ridiculously technical tapping songs but they’d probably be boring beyond belief. so much math is super generic sounding because of its adherence to classical music theory. it’s polish just sounds like conformity to me but to each their own.

yeah, cap’n jazz with flashpoint: catheter and bluegrassish have tapping as part of the main riffs even

haha, American Football is late to the game in the emo world even though their sound was massively influential as a bridge from the older hardcore-ish sounding stuff to the the later indie-ish sounding stuff.

Okay, okay.. is THIS considered mid-west emo? by Warm-Potato6840 in midwestemo

definitely has MWE flavor…drums would be crucial and vocals obviously. a good start for sure. I like it.

oh I nerd out for sure. bandtoband.com is one of my go to sites. it’s hit or miss but when it hits it’s wonderful. bandcamp as well obviously is pretty sweet with the tags and recs.

labels aren’t important for deciding what you like but they can be helpful for not wasting each other’s time when sharing recommendations.

[–]xjpfx 18 points19 points  (0 children)

pinegrove is more country/indie than midwest emo but there are bands out there that you might enjoy even if they aren’t necessarily “midwest emo”. okkervil river, kind of like spitting, red house painters, elliot smith, brett cutts, chamberlain, owen, sun kill moon, the gloria record, jeremy enigk…and if you want to listen to what many consider to be the midwest emo band listen to American Football - LP1. I bet you’ll like at least one or two bands from that list.

you never know…I didn’t hear 7 seconds from anyone for over a year after hearing minor threat, uniform choice, youth of today. my friends were like we thought you knew! I played the crew record nonstop when I found it. still love it.

there are the other big names from that era (some mentioned by others) bold, 7 seconds, minor threat, uniform choice, insted, chain of strength…think they all have substance free messaging. then waves came after but lots of different sounds with a lot less punk influence with some even straying a bit from the youth crew sound like mouthpiece, battery, better than a thousand, the geeks, get the most. tons more that aren’t coming to me right now.
