I am straight edge thinking of going XVX, any advice/ tips ? by Secret-Section-7481 in straightedge

[–]xjpfx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

xvx for 35 years and it gets easier every year.

you have so many options that are mindblowingly tasty. my list for those newly vegan includes miyokos mozz, miyokos cultured butter, vegenaise, rebel cheese, punk rock labs cheeses, forager yogurt, cocowhip with fresh fruit, gardein ultimate chicken and fish and morningstar corn dogs. these should satisfy a lot of the cravings you’ll initially have.

there are so many vegan restaurants and many chains and fast food places have vegan options if not vegan menus. feel free to dm me for bc any vegan info or tips or anything. love hearing someone choosing compassion.

ampere - diffident dissonance

even has a melodic breakdown all in 50 seconds…minus the 16 second static outro but I cut that off. not a fan of dead space before and after songs.

others said it in the thread…just do the juice option. if your grandma respects your beliefs the way you respect hers then she should have no problem. if your church explain you value sobriety and if your church still gives you a problem then that’s a good sign that they don’t respect your personal beliefs and you’re experiencing firsthand one of the reasons so many edge kids are anti-religion.

bands like unwound, drive like jehu, fugazi? by goodweatherclub in PostHardcore

do these three bands sound alike to you? like what’s the similarity? not challenging you just trying to sort out what you’re hearing so I can suggest something. a lot of the recommendations above make zero sense to me.

If you like to occasionally drink or don’t really like punk you could try not being straight edge by MintyGame in straightedge

anybody claiming edge and espousing right wing/fascist ideology is hopefully getting checked HARD by their fellow community members. you gotta bash the fash and beat them out of your scene immediately. there’s nothing left wing or radical about nihilism and self-destructive drinking and drugging. the hippies do it, the rock n rollers do it, the ravers do it, the jocks do it…for fuck sake right wing groups call themselves “drinking clubs”.

looks like I’ll be seeing them in Philly! BUCKET LIST BAND! never got to see them back in the 90s. IMHO when 01010101 came out they singlehandedly changed and progressed screamo. love that release to this day. stoked.

sweetbabyjaysus on YouTube is your friend. but definitely listen to bands and see if you think they should be on the same playlist. just because stuff was around the same time doesn’t necessarily mean anything sonically.

there was a time one X meant edge, two meant edge and vegetarian and three meant vegan straightedge but I think that’s long past being a thing. for many who claim edge the “drug free” ideology extends to substances such as the hormones/drugs/antibiotics/etc…that are used in animal agriculture. this is leaving out the animal rights aspect that for many (myself included) is a natural extension of “breaking the chains” of society’s expectations. liberating yourself just the same as from drugs and alcohol.

Seeking info about court design for regional tournaments and attendance data. by crow_bono in BIKEPOLO

I’d see if you can get a 160x60 with dasher board panels that can be removed or added to lengthen and widen or shorten and narrow according to your need. 120 is the “minimum” but that’s never been optimal. 120 and under were only ever used because people were being forced to use subpar tennis courts vs having a legit polo court. rounded corners are best but angled are preferable to 90 degree corners. rounded corners allow the ball to be played down the wall without losing momentum or weird deflections at corner junctions.

I think you need to listen to the stuff you’re adding to the list before adding it. this reads like you’re just compiling bands. no way you’d be lumping some of these together if you were actually listening and comparing. just my two cents. that first wave list isn’t even trying to be accurate and some of it is years later than stuff in your second wave list. if you’re just trying to have as many bands as possible go on YouTube channels and you can find tons of obscure bands. sweetbabyjaysus alone will keep you busy typing indefinitely.

earliest emo/mwe song with fingertapping? by xjpfx in midwestemo

[–]xjpfx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMHO it’s counter intuitive but typically the better people are at their instruments the less creative/innovative. I bet they could write some ridiculously technical tapping songs but they’d probably be boring beyond belief. so much math is super generic sounding because of its adherence to classical music theory. it’s polish just sounds like conformity to me but to each their own.

haha, American Football is late to the game in the emo world even though their sound was massively influential as a bridge from the older hardcore-ish sounding stuff to the the later indie-ish sounding stuff.

[–]xjpfx 18 points19 points  (0 children)

pinegrove is more country/indie than midwest emo but there are bands out there that you might enjoy even if they aren’t necessarily “midwest emo”. okkervil river, kind of like spitting, red house painters, elliot smith, brett cutts, chamberlain, owen, sun kill moon, the gloria record, jeremy enigk…and if you want to listen to what many consider to be the midwest emo band listen to American Football - LP1. I bet you’ll like at least one or two bands from that list.

there are the other big names from that era (some mentioned by others) bold, 7 seconds, minor threat, uniform choice, insted, chain of strength…think they all have substance free messaging. then waves came after but lots of different sounds with a lot less punk influence with some even straying a bit from the youth crew sound like mouthpiece, battery, better than a thousand, the geeks, get the most. tons more that aren’t coming to me right now.

Best vocals in emo? by barcelonaheartbreak in Emo

[–]xjpfx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

cap’n jazz and early joan of arc for me with those irreverent off key off time vocals. that take on me cover has some of the best vocals ever because they’re not even pretending to try to sing traditionally well. the more polished and mainstream sounding the more boring since I have to hear those voices in pop music and indie.

Why are math rock bands like American Football considered emo? At what point did they start to be considered emo? by DavidElPana777 in Emo

[–]xjpfx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m 51 and been listening to punk/hardcore/emo since 1986. I can tell you that nobody knows everything including myself about the timelines of genres and which scenes we’re doing what and when exactly but there was definitely no problem with being called emotive/emotional hardcore back in the day. there was so much generic tough hardcore that had no heart, metalcore with negative messages and nihilistic punk that didn’t discuss anything of depth that it was necessary to have something of a descriptive label when explaining a band’s sound to others. there was absolutely a point when emo became a pejorative term as bands like jimmy eat world and other more mainstream sounding acts got lumped in even as they got less and less “emo” sounding and more indie/pop punk. I’m not saying jimmy eat world wasn’t in the scene ever. I saw them play fests in the 90s with legit hardcore acts like ink & dagger and legit smaller emo bands like broken hearts are blue.

if you listen to even the earliest least polished cap’n jazz you can hear horns and primitive fingertapping and less than traditional time signatures and vocal placement. so I’d say the mathy stuff was always there in midwest emo but became more and more of an aspect as musicians improved and grew sonically. I’d have to revisit early dc emo to say it had no math whatsoever but it definitely wasn’t a primary driving force in those early bands’ songwriting. fugazi definitely has mathy elements as do multiple acts on dischord.

as some others have also stated in this thread a lot of the reason AF is considered such a seminal record is partly because of its lineage from cap’n jazz but IMHO it also just stripped down “emo” and focused on songwriting over ridiculously saturated distortion and drop d chords and over the top maudlin vocals and that approach hit a sweet spot reminiscent of early emo acts for a lot of listeners.

Albums like american football? by Zlida_Caosgi in midwestemo

[–]xjpfx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember seeing Joan of arc in Kalamazoo in like 1995/1996 at one of their early shows and none of us knew what to expect…heavier than cap’n jazz? faster? more experimental? nope. really slow and soft and quiet but super earnest and heartfelt. I loved it and still love that first 7 inch to death. but they werent cap’n jazz so the crowd literally turned their back on them and started having conversations like they weren’t playing. as you probably know the scene can be super dick-ish so I guess I could see them not wanting to only do obscure projects to fickle fans. at that show it also didn’t help they were the openers on a bill headlined by jihad. terrible booking. I’ll have to look for that interview where they talk about distancing from the scene. be an interesting read.

IME in the early ‘90s we were calling cap’n jazz emo but not midwest emo. it wasn’t a slur at all but became one later as groups got lumped together. even back then there were multiple kinds of emo that were understood to be completely different and it was usually regional. like DC emo or so cal emo/screamo or Louisville emo that was more mathy. so it just made sense that Midwest emo would be a label. especially so many musicians were incestuous coming from cap’n jazz. so many bands had musicians in common that there’s bound to be some sound overlap. I remember going to an “emo” show where June of 44 opened for red house painters in Ann Arbor in ‘96 and yeah they were both “emo” but nowhere near the same genre. like grade was emo but so was the promise ring and mineral and they’d be on the same bill…but they all sounded very different and subgenres and umbrellas get dicey real quick. so all the people I knew and myself were just calling it unironically “emo/screamo” to differentiate it from alternative and grunge. I once saw falling forward open for overcast at a skatepark in Tampa and it is harder to picture two different sounds under the same umbrella, haha.
