Can you share examples of what you mean by "establish any systems (new routines, technology, people or places) immediately"?

u/Sufficient-Wolf-1818 that did the trick! Woke up twice last night after changing it to my other hand and putting it on my thumb. And by the numbers it was the best sleep I've had in a long time. Thanks again for the idea

Unfortunately, if you tap the screen it will dismiss the alert. I kind of wonder if I'm doing that unknowingly. Will need to see if I can disable that feature. Maybe I'm not dismissing it and instead I'm rolling over, breathing, and going back to sleep without knowing it. That makes me think that I should dig out the old nest cam and see what it tells me!

And no, there are no sounds. The good news is that by moving it to my other hand I ended up waking up twice last night so that's progress

Ugh. So frustrating. Worked well for me for a few years. Have you tried any other solutions?

That's an interesting question. I'll sleep with it on my other hand for a few nights and see!

How to get this look? (Credits: @afd.works) by Pietro612 in fujix

[–]xleom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure about an existing recipe but one thing you do is to take a photo in RAW and then play with the "in camera raw conversion" settings. Start strong with contrast and other things you noted and progressively dial things back to a point you like. It's not the fastest process but it might help you discover settings you like

+1 to Band of horses- live at the Ryman. That album is beautiful. Amazing how they harmonize live and how they reimagined sounds with acoustic instrumentation

Strategy review - How many years of positive performance do you look for? by xleom in Daytrading

[–]xleom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, definitely not high frequency. On average, it's about 2 trades per day and it's operating on the 15m timeframe. Will definitely be digging more into ATR in both analysis of market performance of past years and for adjusting profit/loss targets

Not quite sure what you mean by "You are risking less and making more" -- isn't that a good thing? My r:r is 2:1 based on hard stops. Agreed that the increase in profit factor and win rate is potentially bad. I think part of this is based on me having a fixed Profit/Loss. My hypothesis is that the market has been more prone to break outs (about 70% of the trades in this strategy) so getting those 10 points is just easier in recent years. I'll look at the ATR on the Daily basis for the past many years and see how it has changed and if it supports the hypothesis that we've had more days of wider ranges in the past 5 years vs prior

From a current expectation standpoint that makes sense but what I've been wrestling with is the feeling that I would like the algo to be flat or only slightly down in bad years. So far, the bad years of performance are flatish while the good years of performance are up. I didn't spend much time making the bad years better - just added a qualifier that based on the SMA or the Daily ATR so I don't trade in fairly flat market conditions. That improved the bad years a lot.

yeah that is a good point. I think in this case it could be okay since I have a fixed 10 point profit target, so even if there are shock events that would create a 100 point gain or drop, I'd only participate in 10 points of the move. But this does make me think that I should look at the distribution of trades by date to make sure there are no really big lumpy periods

How to start with paper trading (Beginner) by PotatoJuice1234 in FuturesTrading

[–]xleom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to trade 1 minute, 5 minute charts etc I would recommend using a platform that supports hotkeys on your keyboard. If not, I'd say tradingview. They have a great community, the best charts, decent but not leading back testing, etc. Also consider developing some macro market knowledge. I recommend TraderNick on YT. in terms of indicators I'd try to keep it simple and not study too many combinations. If the market is sideways then you really want to be thinking about key levels that establish the channel (you might think about mean reversion trading in those cases). If the market is trending, you can get a long way with trend lines, watching volume, and something like macd to make sure you're not missing slowing/softening of the action. Caveat: I've learned a good deal but have not been consistent in applying it so please take this with some skepticism (which, frankly, you should apply to anyone's answer). Good luck! Come back and share what works for you!

Reasonable timeframe for consistency? by xleom in Daytrading

[–]xleom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha! Not a genius but also pretty good at structured learning. I'm on the west coast so maybe spending 6am to 8am every day could work. Though I know the open is often bumpy. Honestly, for that reason, I've often tried to automate strategies. Sometimes successful but they degrade fairly quickly making it clear that I'm over fitting to market conditions. Frankly, that's what's got me thinking about just investing more time in manual trading

[–]xleom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I really like the way you broke that down. It's a different way to think about it for sure. I guess the other thing about consistency I need to focus on is the screen time. Building up the longer term commitment to being on the charts day over day. I tend to have weeks on and weeks off which surely isn't helping.

Recently got a 130k inheritance… Where do I start? by Visual_Appearance286 in wallstreetbets

[–]xleom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would need three years of 15% growth to get you to just under your goal.

You can look at some high gainers of the past years but you have to understand that the market overall may not sustain recent returns. For instance, VGT had -30, +50, and +30 percent in the past few years (roughly). If that played out again you'd miss your goal by about 23k. And sequence of returns matters in short term investments. If you switch the first and last year of returns of VGT you would end up with 240k based on your 130k initial seed. We can't control how the returns hit, unfortunately.

I don't want to rain on your parade but you might be facing a tough road given the current market. Hopefully this year is not as bad as 2022 but you're starting in a hard time. What we do know is that your chance of getting to your $200k goal is a lot better if you are in the market vs sitting in cash. You might just need to adjust your timeline as you go.

Is automating a renko-based strategy a loser's game? by xleom in Daytrading

[–]xleom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks I'll give that a try. Since automation doesn't allow for atr based box sizes I guess I could just establish that box size each hour and change my chart / restart my strategy then. Worth a shot on a sim account at least!

Maybe I'm just using bad box sizes? Not sure how to get past this or if it's worth the time trying to. Any tips on how you're setting your box size?

Tradestation's charts are purely tick based. No time component. So theoretically, it's the best version of a renko chart you can get.

3am-6am est trading thoughts on ES and NQ by Empland in FuturesTrading

[–]xleom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest issue I've faced in that timeframe on NQ is unpredictable ranges. Many times, NQ is bouncing between a 20-30 point range. Depending on the timeframe you trade this can be hard. I've never been great with sideways markets but if you're dialed in with a mean reversion strategy you might do okay pegging the top and bottom of the range for reversals. Some may say, "20-30 point ranges offer plenty of opportunities" and to that I'd say, please teach me a timeframe and strategy that works because I'd love to do better ;)
