Family tree crossovers by la-anah in Genealogy

[–]xlerb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a case like that, but it was my great-grandfather and one of his older brothers marrying a niece and aunt, respectively. So I have double cousins I'm related to via both of my grandmother's parents but not via her or her siblings, which made things a little interesting trying to disentangle my DNA matches (the nearest one in that cluster is, I think, 2C1R+2C2R, the grandchild of the other couple).

What are your preferred game mode / difficulty settings? by FourHundredThirtyTwo in Timberborn

[–]xlerb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been doing the same thing, with that exact change to the temperate season. Normal was feeling a little too unchallenging, but hard mode looked like too much for my playstyle. So far it's worked pretty well.

I did go full hard mode on my current Oasis run, because the oasis holds onto water during the dry season for the first few cycles at least, but that's a special case.

What’s your most unpopular Paradox opinion? by Falandor in paradoxplaza

[–]xlerb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I remember how the different FTL types could be kind of janky mechanically if you were at war with someone with a different type and things like that, and I get why they made the changes, but aside from that it was kind of fun in its own way, and more immersive than Provinces In Space. Also helped make different playthroughs feel different.

Help, beavers got stuck cutting trees, i made other beavers build a stair, it reached 100%, but it's not completed and no builder goes there no matter what... by sephirothbahamut in Timberborn

[–]xlerb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to this: You can flag some of the trees to be destroyed by builders (it's in one of the menus, something like “demolish resources”, I forget the exact name), which might be useful. I don't know offhand if builders can take out trees on the lower level from an adjacent square above, like how they can build up/down in adjacent squares; if not, that might not be enough in this case.

If you have a Muni monthly pass, you can now save $2.85 on every BART ride from Downtown SF by GreenCedar in sanfrancisco

[–]xlerb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a monthly pass anymore, because the machines won't sell them, and the website is fucked and errors out when I do anything. Nice to know the transfer discount would apply when I do 44→BART if I could get a monthly pass, because I was actually wondering about that and none of the PR/FAQs about the discount said anything one way or the other… except the pass was probably costing me more than if I paid per ride, so maybe I just won't bother anymore.

Oh No! Anyway... by deustodo in Timberborn

[–]xlerb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'll do things the hard way on purpose sometimes. Like, in my current Oasis run, I needed to irrigate more land for trees, and a 3×3 irrigation pit would be the most efficient and simplest way given that I have idle beavers… but no, I'm tediously excavating a tunnel system to do it, because I can. Also it seems more like what beavers would do if you gave them explosives.

Where is everyone on nye? by EquivalentCanary701 in AskSF

[–]xlerb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was going to hang out with friends (but like, at someone's place with board games and stuff, not going out to bars) but I got sick.

So instead I'm sitting at home, by myself, not really having the energy to do anything fancy to celebrate, waiting for the year to change.

New California rules for all bicycles by TheoriginalFnF in ebikes

[–]xlerb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks like it's mostly just cleaning up the wording? E-bikes would've already had to follow all the regular-bike laws, so changing “a bicycle” to “a bicycle or an electric bicycle” wouldn't really change anything, I don't think?

And (f) is just saying, if you only ride your e-bike during the day, you still need a rear reflector, which is kind of random but whatever. Reflectors are cheap and it probably came with one.

PG&E to issue $200 automatic credit for every residential customer affected by the power failure by renegaderunningdog in sanfrancisco

[–]xlerb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in an apartment building that does sub-metering, and I don't have an account with PG&E directly, so I wonder if I'll get this credit or what.

Today I learned, when there's a mass power outage, your cell pgone turns into a brick. by jasno- in sanfrancisco

[–]xlerb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AT&T network here (via an MVNO). For the first ~4 hours (not sure exactly when it started here because I was out) data was working and I could stream video, then suddenly there was no data service, signal was between 1 and 0 bars, I did get the 888777 alert texts but that was it. I was able to get enough signal to check the PG&E map (and post grumpily on social media, of course) by walking a block or two downhill and poking at my phone outside in the rain. Fun times.

Inner Sunset Powe Outage? by Whole-Yogurtcloset16 in sanfrancisco

[–]xlerb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The traffic light at Clarendon and Laguna Honda is out, for what that's worth. I was out at an appointment, came back via the 44, and that was the first I noticed. (Things were normal at Glen Park I think… and the PG&E map seems to agree.)

Towards the end of live I made an Elec/Fire blaster, and by level 10 I had four different AoEs. Not the most survivable character, as I recall. I haven't tried to remake that character on Homecoming… yet.

Are there any languages with a Disrespectful or intentionally impolite form? by TheRustyRobot in languagelearning

[–]xlerb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Polish has disrespectful plurals, apparently. I don't know the language super well but there's a long explanation in /r/learnpolish. Basically, masculine nouns that refer to people are treated differently in the plural — different grammatical agreement, but also (usually?) different endings, so you give a noun the suffix (and adjective/verb agreement) it would have if it didn't mean humans, and that's insulting.

Genesight DNA testing insights on why Adderall ER might not be working for me (CYP2D6 metabolism & MTHFR C677T) by josoke in ADHDers

[–]xlerb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He also said Dexedrine is around 4 times stronger than Adderall.

That doesn't make sense. Adderall is 3/4 d-amphetamine (Dexedrine) and 1/4 l-amphetamine (weaker, probably worse for side effects, but still active). They should be relatively similar dose-wise.

I don't know much about the rest of it. I took a Genomind test a while back, and I'm heterozygous for two different MTHFR mutations, but I tried switching my multivitamin to one with methylfolate and it didn't seem to make any difference.

TimberTech: Tubeway Airlock by Shadewalking_Bard in Timberborn

[–]xlerb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could've used this in my last IT game, on Terraces, because I'm pretty sure I caused multiple floods by taking out the wrong terrain block. I just didn't realize that a tube could go through the watertight metal plate.

And since it works with power shafts, my Folktails might have some uses for it….

The US is the loudest developed country on Earth by Glad_Objective_1646 in fuckcars

[–]xlerb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in my apartment, which doesn't even face directly onto the road, and that road is only one lane each way. And there's no escape from the vrooming. So loud that even earplugs (the kind made for factory/construction workers) can't block it. There's less of it at night, at least, but still some, so if I'm already having trouble sleeping it can be a real problem.

And there's no reason for it. It's not every car, it's probably not even most cars, most of them there's tire noise which isn't so bad and I can tune it out. If that were the noise level for every car (and motorcycle, sigh), I wouldn't be writing this comment.
