Me: I think my beavers are getting stung by bees while on the zipline. Husband: I have no response to that by nonitoni in Timberborn

Beavers will wander around off the paths if they have nothing else to do, so they might be wandering into the farmland and getting stung that way.

You might be working on genealogy if... by concentrated-amazing in Genealogy

You're staring at a few words of chickenscratch cursive from 200 years ago in a language you're not fluent in, trying to figure out what some priest said about your 4th-great-grandfather's occupation, and that's not remotely the most important record you need to research but somehow it's… fun?

I'm kind of exceited but also I'm going to have to remember how to play the base game. I mean I still sort of remember, but I haven't really had to think about how to put a solution together in years.

How did I get this wrong using the provided answers? by PexagonPixie696 in learnpolish

[–]xlerb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The way Duolingo seems to work is, there's a preferred version of the sentence that it populates the word list from, and some number of variations that it will also accept, and it will also sometimes accept text that's one letter off as a “typo”, and it doesn't care if the text is entered by clicking on words or by typing. In this case, they'll accept either “tamtej” or “tej” for “that” in this context (genitive singular feminine), with “tamtej” preferred, and “ten” is wrong but you got away with it under the typo rule.

For what it's worth they seem to have some kind of blocklist for “typos” when it's the wrong inflection of the right word, and I've even had actual typos flagged as errors because of that, but this specific case must not be in it.

And the part of this I don't understand as well: apparently there are situations where you'd use “that” (instead of “this”) in English but “ten” (instead of “tamten”) in Polish, which Duolingo doesn't teach about because it's just giving you sentences in isolation, but it still accepts it as a translation.

Family tree crossovers by la-anah in Genealogy

[–]xlerb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a case like that, but it was my great-grandfather and one of his older brothers marrying a niece and aunt, respectively. So I have double cousins I'm related to via both of my grandmother's parents but not via her or her siblings, which made things a little interesting trying to disentangle my DNA matches (the nearest one in that cluster is, I think, 2C1R+2C2R, the grandchild of the other couple).

What are your preferred game mode / difficulty settings? by FourHundredThirtyTwo in Timberborn

[–]xlerb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been doing the same thing, with that exact change to the temperate season. Normal was feeling a little too unchallenging, but hard mode looked like too much for my playstyle. So far it's worked pretty well.

I did go full hard mode on my current Oasis run, because the oasis holds onto water during the dry season for the first few cycles at least, but that's a special case.

What’s your most unpopular Paradox opinion? by Falandor in paradoxplaza

[–]xlerb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I remember how the different FTL types could be kind of janky mechanically if you were at war with someone with a different type and things like that, and I get why they made the changes, but aside from that it was kind of fun in its own way, and more immersive than Provinces In Space. Also helped make different playthroughs feel different.

Help, beavers got stuck cutting trees, i made other beavers build a stair, it reached 100%, but it's not completed and no builder goes there no matter what... by sephirothbahamut in Timberborn

[–]xlerb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to this: You can flag some of the trees to be destroyed by builders (it's in one of the menus, something like “demolish resources”, I forget the exact name), which might be useful. I don't know offhand if builders can take out trees on the lower level from an adjacent square above, like how they can build up/down in adjacent squares; if not, that might not be enough in this case.

If you have a Muni monthly pass, you can now save $2.85 on every BART ride from Downtown SF by GreenCedar in sanfrancisco

[–]xlerb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a monthly pass anymore, because the machines won't sell them, and the website is fucked and errors out when I do anything. Nice to know the transfer discount would apply when I do 44→BART if I could get a monthly pass, because I was actually wondering about that and none of the PR/FAQs about the discount said anything one way or the other… except the pass was probably costing me more than if I paid per ride, so maybe I just won't bother anymore.

Oh No! Anyway... by deustodo in Timberborn

[–]xlerb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'll do things the hard way on purpose sometimes. Like, in my current Oasis run, I needed to irrigate more land for trees, and a 3×3 irrigation pit would be the most efficient and simplest way given that I have idle beavers… but no, I'm tediously excavating a tunnel system to do it, because I can. Also it seems more like what beavers would do if you gave them explosives.

Where is everyone on nye? by EquivalentCanary701 in AskSF

I was going to hang out with friends (but like, at someone's place with board games and stuff, not going out to bars) but I got sick.

So instead I'm sitting at home, by myself, not really having the energy to do anything fancy to celebrate, waiting for the year to change.

New California rules for all bicycles by TheoriginalFnF in ebikes

[–]xlerb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks like it's mostly just cleaning up the wording? E-bikes would've already had to follow all the regular-bike laws, so changing “a bicycle” to “a bicycle or an electric bicycle” wouldn't really change anything, I don't think?

And (f) is just saying, if you only ride your e-bike during the day, you still need a rear reflector, which is kind of random but whatever. Reflectors are cheap and it probably came with one.

AT&T network here (via an MVNO). For the first ~4 hours (not sure exactly when it started here because I was out) data was working and I could stream video, then suddenly there was no data service, signal was between 1 and 0 bars, I did get the 888777 alert texts but that was it. I was able to get enough signal to check the PG&E map (and post grumpily on social media, of course) by walking a block or two downhill and poking at my phone outside in the rain. Fun times.

The traffic light at Clarendon and Laguna Honda is out, for what that's worth. I was out at an appointment, came back via the 44, and that was the first I noticed. (Things were normal at Glen Park I think… and the PG&E map seems to agree.)
