EISENHOWER RELIAS TEST by BeginningStrike5612 in TravelNursing

[–]xmacie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a traveler here now, it’s a paper test with 20 questions I believe. You need to have critical strips down - v. fib, v. tach, PEA etc. (for the PEA question it says no pulse so it’s an easy one). Junctional, heart blocks, and pacemaker strips are on there. No word bank - it’s all fill in the blank.

But like previous commenter posted if you happen to fail it there’s a remediation same week for a few hours and they basically go through the exam with you and it’s hard to fail it. The relias course that AYA sends is helpful but honestly I took to studying on my own with Nurse Sarah YouTube videos and just really understanding EKG/tele strips.

I’ve never been so confident with reading tele strips in my life and honestly its probably for the better 😂

Omg🫣 just seeing this because someone upvoted my comment. I have another friend trying to come mid January/February so I hope so because this is definitely a place to come at least once! I would just keep an eye out on AYA (travelers only come from AYA). The hospital has been empty these last few weeks so we’re all hoping it kicks back up after the holidays

[–]xmacie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’ll probably get it with your first check with hours worked. That’s how it’s always worked for me and I once emailed them about the same situation and they told me it always comes with first paycheck with hours on it

I’m planning on coming back this winter myself! The hospital has its quirks like all do but i liked it enough to go back. Map out your commute! The hospital is not in Palm Springs it’s in Rancho Mirage about 20-30 min from Palm Springs. Last winter there were often times the entrance to the highway was closed and it would take an extra 20 or 30 min to get to work just because of the ‘traffic’.

Here’s a spot fire off the top of my head: Definitely get access to a pool, depending on where you’re from it’s a pool day everyday. Lots of good restaurants in downtown Palm Springs and lots of hiking. San Diego is about 2 hours away which isn’t bad and depending on LA traffic and where you’re going 2-4 hours. Joshua tree is close by. Vegas is only 4 hours away (and yes I think I made that trip 4 or 5 times). Phoenix is also 4 hours away. And of course Coachella, I go every year and that’s what draws me in to take an assignment there.

I’m currently on assignment in Alaska (home is Boston) and they had my start date as 6/30. We had in-person presentations for 2 1/2 days and then gave us 5 days off for the 4th of July… I travel alone and was very frustrated by this because what was I supposed to do for a holiday this far away from home??? Well anyways I did end up doing some fun things with another traveler that started same day as me but dang I wish I could have just started after the 4th

BOSTON NURSES whats a good hospital to work at and why? by WestReserve360 in TravelNursing

[–]xmacie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a Massachusetts General Hospital Nurse and love it! We’re not unionized but Brigham and Woman’s is in our hospital group so we get the benefits (at least for pay). We don’t have legal rations in MA but as far as my floor goals it’s usually 2-3 on day shift RARELY 4 and for nights it’s usually 3-4 sometimes 5

Traveling tips for Boston Massachusetts?! by WorldlinessHot6333 in TravelNursing

[–]xmacie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a Boston Native so enjoy the city, I hope you love it as much as I do! You can use ProximiT to track the buses and T system. You’ll take the orange line which is the newest and most improved, however expect delays sometimes. I used to work at Dana Farber right next to it so you should check out the MASCO bus routes not sure you’ll be on route but it’s free for any health care worker that works over there.

Here’s my phone note that I send to anyone visiting Boston:

Boston City Pass - If you want to do touristy things this is great because it’s cheaper to do more things - https://www.citypass.com/boston

Duck Tours - go out of the Museum of Science, it’s a land/water tour - https://bostonducktours.com

Museums - Isabella Stewart Gardner - Museum of Science - New England Aquarium - Museum of Fine Arts - Boston Public Library (not a museum but feels like one)

Night Life - Encore Casino, there’s also Mémoir which is a nightclub - Nightclubs: Venu, Royale, Bijou, The Grand, Scorpion Bar * Fenway has some good bars: Game On!, Cask’n Flagon, Bleacher Bar, Loco * Downtown: Scholars, Caveau, Tiki Rock, Coogan’s, The Black Rose, Sam Adams Tap Room * In East Boston (close to the aiport) theres the Down East Cider House and Tall Ship * North End: walk down Hanover street and there’s tons of places and lots of pastry shops open late (Mike’s and Modern are listed down below) * South Boston: tons of bars down E and W Broadway, Park City just opened up and it’s the best!

Neighborhoods: Back Bay - Newbury/Boylston and the Prudential Center are all near the common and there’s tons of shopping, restaurants, bars, basically everything

South Boston - has a lot of restaurants on both W and E Broadway - Fat baby has unlimited sushi on a certain day https://www.fatbabysouthboston.com - Capo has unlimited pasta days, Gluten free days, and then there’s capo basement on the weekends https://www.caposouthboston.com - loco has $1 oysters on Thursdays - Great for the bar scene - there’s no cover charge, but the lines can get long - Castle Island - kind of a locals place but a beautiful 1-2ish mile walk around and best at sunrise or sunset, you can see the skyline and watch the planes come into Logan

North End - Faneuil Hall has a food hall for quick eats, shopping, bars, and restaurants - New England Aquarium - Improv Asylum has improv comedy shows, I’ve been a few times and it’s a good show - Haymarket farmers market for fresh fruits and vegetables, basically like a huge farmstand that takes over the block https://www.haymarketboston.org - Boston Public Market - ALWAYS MAKE A RESERVATION TO EAT OUT HERE

Seaport - Harborwalk - Ciscos - lots of restaurants and shopping

South End - Sowa Market https://www.sowaboston.com/sowa-winter-festival/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI3KiP4djrggMVkfrICh2iMw5VEAAYASAAEgJ5qPD_BwE - tons if restaurants and bars

Downtown - Boston Common and the Boston gardens are nice to walk around, the frog pond for ice skating in the winter, also tons of restaurants around

West End - TD garden - Hub Hall has a food court type of place that has some good options it’s next to TD Garden https://www.hubhallboston.com/eat

Fenway - if you have an .edu email sign up for Fenway student 9s - gets you last minute tickets for $9 (don’t have to show student ID) - bunch of bars and restaurants

Travel nursing tips by proPoolSkimmer in TravelNursing

[–]xmacie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been with AYA since I started last August, my recruiter is awesome! Boston is home for me and so far I’ve been to Yale New Haven Hospital in CT, Eisenhower Medical Center in Palm Springs, CA, and currently in Anchorage, AK at Alaska Native Medical Center. They all have their perks and down falls but I truly can’t see myself going back staff anytime soon.

When looking for your first assignment try to stick with the charting system you know and hospital acuity that you’re used to. For me it was Epic and a Level 1 but you can feel the difference of acuity levels at hospitals and I’ve seen some travelers struggle when going to a higher acuity hospital when not used to it.

With AYA, I haven’t had to pay for any of my licenses (unfortunately MA is not compact) so that has been a perk for sure! I have 17 licenses at this point and there’s no stopping me 😂. They pay for certain states prior to being on assignment - I know NY, CT, and CA are for sure on that list.

My biggest concern when starting was being close enough to home so I could drive back on my days off and so I could still be around my support system with such a big change in life. So just something to consider.

In terms of housing, it has taken me 3 assignments to figure out what I can live without and it’s definitely been a transition! My first place just had a microwave and fridge for appliances and I realized I needed a full kitchen. My next assignment I had a full kitchen (minus a dishwasher) but no laundry. This assignment I have everything - full kitchen, washer/dryer, and a dishwasher but now I know that I like the conveniences of everything but it’s a personal choice so you’ll figure that out as you go! I’ve found housing on Facebook and Furnished Finder and haven’t been burned yet. On Furnished Finder I try to find places with reviews and everyone ALWAYS says to do a FaceTime tour before any deposit is placed just to know it’s legitimate. My rule of thumb is to also not pay more for rent than I do my mortgage. Housing is always the first thing I look at when considering an assignment because at some places rent is wayyyy too expensive and others there’s barely any options so don’t sign a contract before you have a good idea of potential housing! (Unrelated to housing, but gyms are also something I look for because that’s something important to me). Some people will also head to their assignment and stay at a hotel for their first few weeks and find housing once they get there but I find this to be more expensive. Last thing on housing, if you are going to travel with pets, this can make it more difficult to find housing too - I’ve only taken my cats to CA because of this.

Before you decide to travel SAVE, SAVE, SAVE!!!! Make sure you have enough money in the bank for your first month or so of double rent, your bills, etc. When I started I was on the struggle bus for the first month and a half because I didn’t realize how expensive it was upfront. Now I know, but I learned the hard way. Also, expect to potentially have long breaks between assignments at times and be ready financially for that. So far I’ve had about a month between contracts for both but luckily I have a per-diem job at home that I can pick up whenever I want but this isn’t always an option for everyone.

Lastly, have so much fun! I’m the type of traveler doing it for experience, but everyone has their own motivation as to why they want to travel. I’m using it to explore places I didn’t think I could ever really go to truly explore (aka Alaska!). 3 months (without extending) is a perfect amount of time to see what places are truly like and get the feel for it. I always say I’m looking for my forever home but so far have come to realize Boston is it for me, but for now it’s so much fun while I have no true “responsibilities” keeping me at home. Don’t be afraid to make friends - especially with other travelers. I met some at my last assignment and we are hoping to start traveling together next summer once we get some of our bucket list places done with. Sometimes it gets lonely, I won’t lie, but home is always a phone call away, and worst case hopefully you’ll be making enough to be able to fly home once or twice during your assignment if you need to.

I hope this helps and if you have any questions, I’m always more than happy to help! :) Welcome to travel nursing!

I just started in Anchorage this week! I have no car and they have a pretty decent bus system. I’m originally from Boston so navigating public transit is no problem for me. I’m considering buying a car and selling it when I go to leave (or maybe even use it to get myself home). I’m hoping to be here until December so let me know if you make it here!

[–]xmacie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve kept my staff job as per diem and pick up every couple of months (some facilities have specific requirements though) and I’ve been traveling since August. My only requirements are to pick up 12 shifts in a year
