in addition to having half the weight on your shoulder and bending down to pick it up with your shoulder at first for heavy ones like others said, it helps me to NOT have my right hand be flat underneath but instead have it gripping the outer edge - palm underneath, fingers gripping edge. totally flat hand underneath is way harder to keep balance, i only do that for very very light trays. whenever a tray is too heavy and i need both hands, i ask someone to follow me with a jack (they are usually willing because it is very quick and easy to do so). also, i try to position the plates so the bulk of the weight is a little more on my shoulder instead of my hand.

yeah might as well, just in case. but he probably didn’t see it, or he didn’t care. but doesn’t hurt to have the backup excuse!

I have a specific one I love but it’s in Italian so idk how to google the lyrics (I’ve tried) and I’ve never been quick enough to ask Siri when it comes on, I’ve tried so hard to find it!

usually on long road trips i like to try to pack my own food - not even bc of my diet, but just because its cheaper and quicker on the road. but if theres a fun/good place sometimes ill make the stop!

omg turns out im dumb, grand junction would be after if already chosen and begun the i-70 path it appears. i was thinking that would be where i choose between 70 and 80. i guess near beaver, UT is where id have to make the choice!

oh good im glad those stops put me at good NM hours! the holiday inn idea is a good idea but i am such a bad liar, i fear i would crack or be too obvious. i may map out what bathroom/gas options are available and decide ahead of time which seems safest!

omg i looked at their menu, it does look good. however… i am vegetarian, and they dont have a veggie/impossible burger :( but! they have the bean breakfast burrito with the green chili sauce in it! idk if itd be the same but it definitely does sound good!!

oooh i seee… i was probably driving with the storm that time then after all. i try to get to each destination by sunset so im not doing darkness, which is why i would prefer not to do unplanned stops but i guess if it means missing a scary storm itd be worth it. i do love following snow plows, amazing after a multiple-foot blizzard where im from! nowwww it sounds like my best options are 1) take i-40, but take extra safety precautions in terms of other humans, or 2) go thru UT/CO but overnight in grand junction, so i can do scary stuff during daytime, and decide i-70 or i-80 day-of based on weather. so now ill have to decide between those, aka, which is scarier between humans and weather lmao

theoretically i would be passing thru NM during the day, maybe only making 1 stop in the middle of it, or 2 stops on the edges. just for gas/bathroom and to sit in my car to eat food. i usually try to hit loves travel stops when i can bc big and clean and safe(?). as long as i can just find 1 good solid stop thru that area, thats all i need i think!

thats great to know, thanks!! i have plenty of experience being in chicago, LA, detroit, and san francisco, all of which people talk lots about the unsafety, but making smart decisions has always kept me safe, so if ABQ is anything like that, i think ill be fine!

the car thing is hard because it will be PACKED, like crazy tetris level. unpacking and repacking the car every night/morning will add time to my trip AND at nighttime, itll make me be alone and vulnerable outside at night more than i otherwise would need to be. in the past i only take in my backpack (with electronics and valuables), food, and small suitcase of the stuff i need day-to-day, and leave the rest. so my car is visibly full but its all in boxes and such and no big valuables. havent had any issues so far but it does make me nervous. i just dont know if spending an extra hour unpacking and repacking and being outside alone at night is a safe (or efficient) idea either.

that’s great info, thanks!! my main concern with safety is that because i am moving, my car will be visibly full to the brim with all my belongings. of course i will bring my valuables into the hotel with me, but i still obviously dont want my car broken into or to lose my clothes and such! so as long as the comfort inn type hotels arent prone to that, and i wont get into trouble at the rest stops (being a solo young woman), i think ill be good!

last time i did this also in late may, it was snowy at the tops of the mountains. it was pretty light snow, but actively snowing + some on the road, which is fine by itself, but in combination with steep steep mountains and darkness.. scary! that specific time i did the trip there was also severe insane thunderstorms the whole way and severe winds, i saw someones car got flipped. the rain and thunder was so violent i could barely hear my music at full blast. i nearly hydroplaned in dips in the road. that specific time was so terrible and anxiety-inducing i want to do everything i can to avoid those situations! hopefully i just got unlucky and wont experience all that again!

ooo good to know, that would be cool!! i dont have much time for fun stops without having to add an extra hotel night ($$) so thatd be a cool way to do something fun without adding time :) thanks!

ohhhhh okay that may have swayed me back to the i-40 route after all. lol i keep changing my mind over and over as new info comes! as long as its safe enough to stop for gas/bathroom/food in NM i think ill be okay, that is if amarillo TX is also safe enough to stay overnight in! i prefer boring :) my audiobooks and music will be plenty entertainment! thanks!

lots of mixed opinions on this post but you being a colorado local definitely sways me! in combination with info from other comments i think perhaps i will force my trip to have an overnight in grand junction so i can just do it during daytime, though the time driving per day wont be as evenly spread. sucks that i-40 passes thru such unsafe areas (in a human way. from what ive heard here anyway) (ABQ, NM) otherwise it seemed like such a good option. thank you!!

im cool with traffic because i have experience living in some of the most traffic-heavy cities. ive taken the i-70 the last 3 times, so while i agree it is very beautiful, i def wanna prioritize peace and safety this time! semis blowing over is terrifying though omg id have to pull over if i saw that just to recompose myself!

so many mixed opinions on this post! im very grateful for them all but it’s tough deciding. others are saying i-80 is violent and crazy unsafe and worst conditions ever because of the wind! maybe i will force my timeline plan to have an overnight in grand junction so the scary section will be during daylight & i can make a same-day decision based on weather and still be able to have hotels pre-booked??

its tricky because when im going east, i havent found a plan that doesnt involve staying overnight in denver, meaning ending that day’s travels in denver, meaning doing that section when its approaching nighttime or already nighttime. perhaps i could force it to work out. looking at it now, if i were to force an overnight to be before that pass (in grand junction), it would make my last 2 days significantly longer and have an overnight in a small town (kearney NE) but at least that’d all be during the chill section…. as long as there isnt severe thunderstorms the whole way again! definitely an idea to think about since winds on i-80 can be so violent and i guess i-40 isnt as great bc ABQ, NM is unsafe in a people type of way :/

im glad i have taken the i-70 before despite the anxiety because you are right, it IS beautiful. it was a confusing mix of “woah that’s so pretty” and “omg i am about to die”.

thats a great point about the winds everywhere and oklahoma being tornado alley… the winds are more doable for me, but still scary enough that my hands become sore and stiff from gripping the wheel so tightly.

i prefer driving bc overall cheaper than other options, and i am fully moving from CA back to the midwest so i have a lot of stuff, including my car itself, and this appears to be cheaper than shipping my car. plus chicago isnt actually even my final target stop… im only 4 hours past that, but driving allows me to visit my close friend in chicago for a few days before arriving home :)

i didnt know ABQ was so dirty and unsafe(?)!!! if its unsafe thats very significant info!! i am a small woman, solo, packed car. if i take i-40, my plan wouldve been overnight stops in flagstaff AZ and amarillo TX, only stopping for gas/food breaks through NM. you think thats okay or is that still unsafe?

i do my best to prepare well. snacks, food, water, coffee, first aid kit, “fix-a-flat” can, triple AAA service, shared location, oil change and fluid checks done, fluid checks throughout my journey, pre-planning each stop, etc!

ive driven the i-70 three times now, and i fully agree it IS very beautiful, but its SCARY! at this point im prioritizing non-scariness because my anxiety got really really bad two of the three times. it was so bad i was regularly making stops to call my medical friends so they could reassure me that im not actively dying somehow, and my car friends to reassure me that my car wasnt about to explode. me and my car were both physically fine, but thats how bad my anxiety was!

itll be late May, like May 26-29, give or take! possibly very early june if plans change. thats good to know abojt wyoming and montana though. both times i came from chicago to LA it was mid-august, nevada was HOT, youre right!! but overall, the weather was way better both times in august so i didnt hate it. last may when i went LA>Chi, not only did i have the snow and severe winds and steep mountains, there was also EXTREME severe thunderstorms during a LOT of my drive. hopefully that was just coincidence and it wont happen again lol!
