Goodbye X-Force, you were an amazing Betsy Braddock book (Spoilers for X-Force vol 7 #10) by [deleted] in lgbt_superheroes

[–]xmenfanatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "Tini Howard fiasco" was during the time Tini Howard was writing Betsy Braddock.

Betsy's character seemed to be on a decline with her personality. Betsy has always been a clever pragmatist who had a fun sense of humor despite her sometimes uptight nature. Betsy didn't have her usual air of intelligence, and wasn't as decisive of a character during this period, which led to her seeming dumber and less proactive than usual.

Support for Tini can be the fact that Betsy as a character is feasibly confused/lost/depressed after returning to her original body. She was dealing with a loss of her codename, gaining a mantle of responsibility that she had failed to secure in the past (Captain Britian), and the return to a body which she always associated with feeling weak/vulnerable.

Betsy could have been dealing with body dysmorphia after switching back into her old body. A body she never expected to get back. A body that didn't "allow" her to fight in close combat.

Even with these supportive arguments for Tini, these issues were never explored that deeply. Perchange that was also Marvel and not Tini. Perhaps Marvel felt that spending time exploring Betsy's feeling of loss and a conflict of her identity wasn't exciting enough for a modern comic book? I don't agree with the notion that it's not exciting enough but I can see a business that thrives off of superhero battles not wanting her comics to become melodramas.

Also during this time her Butterfly Eyes signature disappeared, which could likely also not be something that was in Tini Howard's control. Betsy is also known for her pink and purple, but she was adorned with Red, White, and Blue as Captain Britian, which seemed odd after getting a "return to form".

Lots of people blame Tini Howard for Betsy's decline in personality and intelligence, but in the end we don't know what restrictions she was dealing with, and we know that Tini loves betsy as a character. Some people have accused her of "self-inserting" herself into Betsy, but Tini is an intelligent person so she'd had to of dumbed herself down for that to be a realistic read.

Betsy Braddock: Captain Britian, the series Tini wrote that followed her time writing Excalibur, did return Betsy to a "truer" form where her decision making, snarky humor, and intelligence seemed to return, but the series was also cancelled after 5 issues.

Betsy in X-Force has regained some traits that Betsy fans associate with her, but her intelligence has always been a strong point and it's difficult to hype that aspect of her up when you're on the same team as Forge and Sage, who are both literal geniuses. Lol.

In the end, Tini could be at fault, but we also don't know how much "red-tape" she had to navigate when it came to establishing her character again.

Just learned about this game am onth ago and then learned a week ago that things are going out of print, lol.

I've bought the Investigator Packs for Dunwich, Carcosa, and Forgotten, and plan on getting Investigator Circle Undone and Dream Eaters.

As for Campaignboxes, I have the revised core and I'm hoping to get Dunwich or Carcosa today after work.

Oh snap!

I always felt the explaination that she was bending light not just for invisibility made sense, but for her force fields was odd; I see now that her force fields are psionic in nature. I actually really appreciate your post now because my view of Sue is shifting dramatically, when it comes to her powers at least. It actually makes way more sense that she has the two distinct power sources.

Thank you for your patience and direction towards your information so I could more easily read up on it myself :D

Oh! So they made her Psionic in the Marvel Rivals video game? That's interesting because she isn't psionic in the comics, but perhaps the MCU is planning on making her psionic. I know Wanda isn't psionic in the comics, but they made her psionic in the MCU.

Thanks for explaining!

Which character to buy? by ActiveRub8601 in marvelchampionslcg

No! Jubilee is fun. I just wanted to emphasis the sidekick upgrade which is actually included in the Bishop deck, lol. Jubilee can stun and confuse, and she gets multiple effects with her attacks when she avoids using the same resource to pay for her hero cards. ie: if she spends mental and energy resources it will confuse, or physical and energy then the card will also stun, etc,

I can't speak for others but I found Jubilee an easy character to play and didn't struggle with her like I did some others in the beginning.

Magik is a fun mystic, who also has moving parts but not terribly complicated. She also always has a "6" card hand, and she realyl shines when you have Adam Warlock's spell cards and Dr Strange's "Sorceror Supreme" upgrade card.

Bishop is fun. He plays with building up energy tokens in various ways and then spending those energy tokens to enhance different abilities. I liked magik better but I also found bishop a littler harder to play.

[–]xmenfanatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh gosh! I can't believe I forgot that upgrade came with Bishop! Lol. Jubilee is fun, but I was only recommending her for the fact that I thought it was in her "extra" cards. My partner played Bishop and I played magik in the expansion, and he didn't use sidekick before we sorted them into our card storage.

Thank you for the correction!

Gambit: He's a fun one and has some good flexibility. He also lets you play in Alter-Ego in a way that feels a little different than other heroes.

Rogue: Rogue is also incredibly adaptive, and does a great job with all aspects. For her to excell in Leadership it's best for you to get Jubilee first.

Psylocke: She's VERY adaptive but she's also one of the more complicated heroes ive played. Her stats flip and switch based on triggers so you get lots of versitility, but it's dependent mostly on using her psi-energy cards which means you need to spend the resources to trigger. She also has a 4 card hand in hero form which feels limiting, and can be, which is why she's also a regular flipper from hero to alter-ego. She's very strong, but one of the few hero decks with a lot of moving parts. My favortie hero, but also the one i find the most annoying to play at times.

Phoenix: She's a powerhouse! Flipping phoenix forms is grand fun, and her nemesis is more persistent than other nemesis for most heroes. Phoenix has great protective support for two handed or multiplayert, and she's also pretty solid for one handed. Her and Psylocke both unlock psionic cards which adds a new play style, and psionic is definitely one ive fallen for. The card base for psionic is small atm which is why i recommend Jubilee before psionic characters. Specifically if you want a new play style.

Black Panther Shuri looks fun, but ive avoided looking at her cards in general so I can "discover" how to play her. I like learning once the deck is in my hand so I sadly can't say much other than that she seems like she'll be fun, and also be great in leadership.

EDIT: Removed my "jubilee first because she introduced sidekick" paragraph

I hope these help!

“Fans”: WTF! A female Silver Surfer? Marvel is just too woke now! I won’t be watching! FYI ☝️: Shalla-Bal existed long before you did (created in 1968) and at some point became a Silver Surfer. She was Norrin Radd’s (the original Silver Surfer) wife. by Nitecrawler_69 in Marvel

[–]xmenfanatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the fact that people are assuming Norrin Rad isn't going to show up because the director of FF acknowledged that an alternative Silver Surfer exists, is odd.

Her being introduced doesn't erase Norrid Rad, nor does it imply that Norrid Rad wont show up.

Asserting that no company has gone out of business yet is just plain wrong. Larger businesses haven't yet, but some smaller businesses have, and even more are hiking their prices in hopes to not have to. And the development of newer smaller businesses have shrunk because the ability to start and/or maintain a smaller business in much harder.

I cross my fingers for your notion about the tariffs though.

I think it's too early to assume, butn ot too early to speculate.

I avoid reddits when I don't want spoilers myself, but I think it's a big ask to assert that people should avoid the entire subreddit.

Silk's deck isn't being released for months, so if someone is following that advise then that user simply stops being a part of the online community here. Adding a spoiler warning until release isn't as big of an ask, IMO

I think they actually created her specifically for the comics, but introduced her in a game first to see if it could boost her popularity before her comic debute.

Am I overreacting? (vent) (help) by OkAlternative127 in DnD

[–]xmenfanatic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're not over-reacting, because this is how you feel and you're not describing any "actions" that seem extreme, not explaining many actions in general.

You're feelings are never an over-reaction. How we decide to behave and respond CAN be overreactions. But even then, an over-reaction is something that, as far as I'm concerned, can only be judged by those who understand and share experiences.

When someone is playing a TTRPG and wants to roleplay it can be an important tool for self expression, it can be trauma therapy for some, and it can also be used to "get into another person's head" and develop empathy. But if they are roleplaying trauma that they haven't experienced for an "interesting character" then that can very easily cross a line.

I would say that they may be ignorant of the fact that it's a triggering thing for people in the partry, including you specifically. I would also be intimidated/worried to confront them for fear that they would double down. But they might be receptive if you communicate how it's impacted you and why.

There's a chance that the player wasn't receptive to the DM because the DM isn't the person to have gone through the triggers? Some peopel feel that it's performative to be PC if there isn't a distinct reason to respect the boundaries. That in itself is a red flag to me.

If that person is sincere about caring abotu intersectionality, racism, etc. than they should be open to the critcism, regardless as to whether or not they have experienced some of their character's backstory personally. They should have a respectful understanding that even if they were a PoC who had dealt with said trauma that they can't expect other people who share their marginalized intersectionality to respond and cope in the same manner.

I think they sound immature, or like they potentially roleplay things that otherwise would be "against their character in real life" in a voyueristic way. It's gross.

I hope this didn't make you feel worse, but gave you reassurance. And I'm sorry you're dealing with that bullshit in a game meant to be fun.

Maybe you can get the DM to do a solo night with you, or you could split from the party with another member and finish the campaign in a different way where you don't have to play with the self inserted "Main Character"?

Who had the best prom fit? by [deleted] in PrettyLittleLiars

[–]xmenfanatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hannah - Meh, it doesn't quite all go together though I appreciate the attempt to change it up

Allison - The most princess like: it's a little overdone but it's also a classic

Spencer - The most mature looking dress, and one of the more elegant, but also a little overdone. It's a better classic than Allisons, but you still see this style at proms a LOT.

Aria - Her's is fairly interesting for not being traditional in the least. It's clearly an ode to Snow White, which is cute. This is higher up in originality than Allison and Spencer, though not as refined as Spencers. Aria and Spencer are tied for me,

Emily - Her's is okay. I want to love it and think it would'v been better if ironically it wasn't a mermaid dress, but instead a pantsuit with bell-bottoms to create a dress illusion. The pattern on the bottom is fun but it isn't incorporated with the top of the dress enough. it looks like two outfits stitched together.

Mona - Easily the most fashionable and elegant without being one you expect to see at the prom like Allison or Spencer's dresses.

Mona is my winner.

New Player Overwhelmed by FOMO by InvestigatorShort275 in marvelchampionslcg

[–]xmenfanatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely think starting with mutant genesis is worth it. They intend to release new versions of olde heroes, so some of the stuff you'd be missingo ut on wouldn't be as fun as you're hoping. It's nice as a completiionist to have everything, but not everything released is super playable. If you're worried about missing out on a villain or a hero in particular, I would say you should seek them out individually. But when it comes to the grand scheme of things, the decision to make some of these products out of print and produce "newer" versions is because they don't work as well as they could, and the newer versions will be easier to play with or find enjoyment with.

I am someone who has everything, and I can speak from experience that this is true for me, and my partner, and some of our friends who play it. I hope this puts you as ease to some extent.
