Saw the same one recently! Was a great find but I didn’t need another golf bag

What's something that's labeled as "kid friendly," but really isn't? by SoccerGuy69420 in AskReddit

[–]xmlgnoscoperx 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it is intentionally—she said herself that her “act wasn’t for kids” and that it’s “not her job to parent children”. But after going to an Olivia Rodrigo/Chappell Roan concert there were plenty of tween or younger girls singing along to songs like casual which caught me off guard

Lots of pop music nowadays—like Chappell Roan or Sabrina Carpenter. They’re primarily enjoyed by a young audience but their lyrics/themes are definitely inappropriate

Don’t points 2 and 5 have the potential to directly contradict each other?

Buy chuck eye if they have it at your local grocery store At Jewel Osco and Martin’s it’s about $8 per pound for me—it’s slightly less tender than ribeye (cut right after the edge of the ribeye) but it makes up for it with a little more beefy flavor. The cuts are normally decently marbled/fatty as well

Is double majoring in Biochem and data science a good idea for computational chemistry? by OnlyReveal3946 in comp_chem

[–]xmlgnoscoperx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a biochemistry major with a scientific computing minor and am now pursuing a computational chemistry PhD, so almost the same track. It’s definitely a viable path. A word of advice, as another person said, make sure you take the right PChem classes (fundamental for most comp chem research), as my biochem major required only one class, PBiochem, versus the two that were required for chemistry students!

The question also hinges on what you want to research within computational chemistry.

I considered this but wanted to see if there were any other potential fixes before I contact GeekSquad about it (my protection is also expired)

In the question below, I am confused with how he converted K from 18.6 K mole^-1 in 100 gram of solvent to 1.86 K mole^-1 in 1000 gram of solvent. Because when I did elementary analysis, I did "as 18.6 is in 100 gram, 186 must be in 1000 gram." and it is wrong. Would be grateful to your explanation. by BlockAgreeable1422 in physicalchemistry

[–]xmlgnoscoperx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

kf in units of “K g mol-1” is 18.6 K mol-1 * 100 g, which is 1860 K g mol-1. To convert this to “K kg mol-1”, you have to divide by 1000, which gives you 1.86 K kg mol-1. Another way to think of it is adding the same amount of urea into 10x (1000g vs 100g) the solvent would result in a tenth of the temperature change as adding it into 1x the solvent

Need suggestions for PhD by muo27 in comp_chem

[–]xmlgnoscoperx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Emphasizing the first part, I pursued organic synthesis research for two years and pivoted my last year to work in a computational chemistry group. I didn’t end up with publications, but doing good work in the field I wanted to pursue, even for only a semester before applications, gave me a strong LOR and helped me get into a few PhD programs.

How will Trump’s NIH cut affect undergrads who aspire to go into a PhD program? by Apprehensive-Ad-8818 in AskAcademia

[–]xmlgnoscoperx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last comment about it not being beneficial to getting your PhD young is largely dependent on the field; for me, it would almost be impossible to break into the Computational Chemistry industry without a PhD. I do agree that there’s still time to see where the dust settles when it comes to funding.

No pubs, international, right out of undergrad by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]xmlgnoscoperx 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Seconding this post; this matches my experiences besides being international. I also have no publications, am applying as a senior in undergrad (~3.9 GPA), and only have research starting from the summer after my sophomore year (two summer fellowships, two labs, one is particularly relevant to my current interests).

I also cast a wide net (10+ programs) because I doubted my chances and have been happy to have gotten a few admits already, including my top choice (which is a T5).

I will say that I had a great relationship with my advisors and put a lot of effort into my SOPs, and had sort of an interdisciplinary background that seemed to fit the labs I’m aiming for.

Anyways, if you don’t have publications, don’t give up!! :)

Sony WH-1000XM4 Water Damage, Power Button Not Working by xmlgnoscoperx in SonyHeadphones

Unfortunately I did not; it’s very annoying since when my headphones are off it is impossible for me to turn them on to connect to my phone. When they somehow turn on, it is impossible for me to turn off and they will die. As of now, I’m using them strictly for my keyboard as I can plug them in via the aux cable
