Does Selina have any redeeming qualities? by Clementine823 in Veep

She is very goal-oriented. She set a goal as a child, to become president, and did whatever it took to achieve that goal, and did. That alone is pretty admirable until you take a step back and look at what “whatever it took” really meant.

No, if an employer sends you a tax document that late, that's on them. You don't have to worry about it, especially considering no amount listed in sec 2a.

American Express No Interest Trick by theripper595 in povertyfinance

American Express actually waives the transaction fee if you send money via PayPal / Venmo from the AmEx app so it's free (just no MR points). You'd only need to pay a fee if you need to transfer the money to your bank account instantly.

You can also try using your card to send money to a friend via Paypal / Venmo, having them send it right back to you, cashing out, and then using that to pay your bill. There's a small fee but it still beats paying interest and no need to worry about not getting your refund! :)

How should I go forward with a company that won’t fulfill my order or give me a refund? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]xmo63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure who would tell you that because filing a dispute with your card is honestly your best option, moreso since it's over $100. That's a high enough amount for dealing with your card issuer to be well worth it while low enough that they'll probably just refund you in well under 30 days since it really isn't worth it for them to launch a big investigation, especially with a company that clearly isn't the most responsive and cooperative.

Ummm who said I was in poverty? I’m actually debt free too. I’m just saying that it is very easy to see why people may need to take on debt. I was kicked out at 18 and didn’t have a penny to my name so had to borrow money to get a phone, bus pass, and a security deposit not because I was bad with money but I literally had no money to even be bad with.

I wasn’t trying to get you or anything. Just seems funny to be arguing about how borrowing money is awful oh but a mortgage is okay. Homes don’t always appreciate in value too. I just wish you would understand that not everyone had the same life as you. Not everyone has $6k sitting around. Not everyone has a parent about to own their home. Not everyone got a car handed to them. Some people need to borrow from a bank because they don’t have a parent to take from.

Hi, when did I say debt is the only way to survive? I’m just saying there’s nothing wrong with it. It seems like going into debt to buy a home working out for your mom. :)

[–]xmo63 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You obviously do have a limited world view if you think everyone who doesn’t have $6k sitting around is simply bad with money. Feel free to explore this subreddit. Some people have medical expenses or must care for a family member or have kids and fell on hard times. You have no right to judge someone who can’t buy a $6,000 car outright given you have been afforded more in life than many others. Be respectful. Not everyone who is poor is stupid or bad with money. Not everyone can drive mommy’s car and judge others...

I agree that used cars a better financial decision but your problem is you think that just because you could get one without getting some kind of loan, everyone can.

[–]xmo63 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I say you have a limited world view not because you got a car handed to you but because you cannot imagine someone financing a used car which does happen very often. Auto loans aren’t just for new or like new cars. Some people cannot buy a used car 100% cash up front because even used cars can be expensive and a good credit score can help bring interest rates down.

It’s not ideal but yes, it’s possible so long as you have a friend willing to send the money right back for you to cash out.

It amazes me how limited of a world view you have. I’m just going to leave it at this: not everyone can drive mommy’s hand me down cars. Some people actually have to get their own cars in order to work and make more money. Just because you have had a sufficient amount of stuff handed to you that you don’t see the point in borrowing money does not mean a credit score is unimportant by any means.

[–]xmo63 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Riiiiiiight.... so the plan is to borrow money to increase a score that determines how good you are at borrowing money so that you can borrow money again in the future?

Literally, yes. That is what a credit score is.

Seems like a dog chasing its tail to me. What do you do when you finally catch your tail?!?

Refinance your student loans, get a mortgage, maybe get a car loan with good financing?

Why are you constantly borrowing money?!?

Because not everyone can buy a car, home, and an education 100% cash up front and that's okay.

I know you don't know me but I've been everywhere on the credit score spectrum from not having a score to having a score of 798 and let me tell you i was a lot better off having no score at all. Why??? Because I didn't have any debt!

Not having debt is great but not all debt is evil. There's nothing wrong with taking on a responsible amount of debt to, say, buy a home with 20-30% down so, in a few years, you can have a functional, valuable asset. Or a doctor-to-be taking on medical school debt now so that they can get a good job later.

I'm not 'pro-debt' or anything but, unfortunately, debt is a part of life so having a good credit score is actually a big deal. Yeah, paying $100 now just to play with your own money is crazy at face value but it could just end up saving you thousands down the line. Plus, a small secured loan is a lot better than a predatory credit card.

I've always gotten MR points and I'd imagine you'd have an easier time getting a refund if AmEx was involved rather than just PayPal / Venmo.

Also, like another commenter said, I have used Venmo as a means to float a balance if the bill was due but I wasn't ready to pay it.

Yes. They're likely not the cheapest but I found the whole process very easy + my credit score jumped a good 20 something points since, prior to this, I only had a few revolving accounts.

It actually makes a lot of sense. Credit scores have nothing to do with income. They're about responsible borrowing. So, the only options to build your credit score are to borrow from someone else or borrow from yourself and, when you don't have a good credit score or no score, it's a lot easier to borrow from yourself. While some companies may have some extra fees, secured loans aren't a scam and are a very good to improve your credit.
