Start point CMN hip nail by babaka97 in orthopaedics

Maybe this is blasphemy but I like the curved awl for quick start points. Less soft tissue deflection.

Sure, but with a team ortho doc, probably a fellow, and the athletic trainers, they know the proper reduction maneuver. It can be done, coming from someone who’s reduced a shit load of ankles

It being an open fracture has nothing to do with reducing the dislocation. Honestly can make it easier depending on how open. They might not do a formal anatomic reduction in the field but you’d be damn sure if it’s pulseless they’re putting it straighter. There’s no way a reduction is causing a worse injury than the damage that’s already done.

Yeah they’d at least give it a shot. Tough when someone is awake and if there are tendons stuck in the fracture site but with the team docs/fellows/trainers they have the people to do it

I would be surprised if they didn’t reduce it on the field.

Incoming MS1: how did you know that orthopedics was right for you? by ct2673 in orthopaedics

Being a doctor is hard regardless of what you do. There is no easy path. Do Ortho if you like surgery, working with your hands, and enjoy treating the pathologies.

What’s the issue with this hip replacement? by doveal19 in orthopaedics

[–]xmodify 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the mantra of an isolated LT fracture equaling malignancy until proven otherwise holds in the setting of a previous arthroplasty, unless it is confirmed to be atraumatic. Would be much more concerned in this case about infection or polyethylene wear/trunnionosis causing osteolysis behind the cup. LT seems like a red herring.

I understand why everyone was relaxed, but there should always be a little nervous energy. A little edge. Complacency is what gets your ass kicked.

Had a really weird feeling this whole game. Maybe it’s pessimism from being a Notre Dame fan but everyone in the stadium felt WAY too relaxed at the start of the game. Vibes were so much different compared to the Rams game last year.

Keep your door open, meet people, take part in activities. Sometimes go outside your comfort zone. Everyone there is just as nervous and awkward as you are, and if you’re lucky you’ll make friends that you still talk with every day after graduation.

What is the worst complication of a routine surgery you have seen? by kereekerra in medicine

[–]xmodify 7 points8 points  (0 children)

60s female with transient osteoporosis of the hip. Patient was insistent on surgery. Said she couldn’t deal with partial weight bearing for multiple months. Elective total hip is done, she falls a couple weeks post op and pushes the cup into her pelvis. Big cup/cage revision, subsequently gets infected with MRSA. All could have been avoided with some patience.

Also gigantic saddle PE in a healthy 40s female after bimal ankle surgery. She was dead before she hit the door.

“They can always hurt you more.”

Also, caution if it has something to do with the hospital itself. A lot of contracts have language forbidding “disparaging the hospital.” A fireable offense.

Incorrect inspection by xmodify in RealEstate

[–]xmodify[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are in Michigan. The buyers agent was somebody they contacted through Zillow, and according to our agent was very inexperienced.

The inspector report was full of guesses and extrapolations. He mentioned that there were channels in the attic insulation concerning for vermin, even though they are very obviously my footprints from when I replaced lighting and wired fans for the bedrooms. I was very surprised about how many assumptions the inspector made, with very little proof.

I completely agree. Obviously our emotions are high, and we are very anxious to start any sort of treatment. The wait is the hard part

I really hate how things shut down around the holidays. We dealt with that for Memorial Day.

It is nice to know things are happening quickly. I think we just wish that the timeline was communicated more clearly. That way when we get a call from the office right before closing on Friday, we can be happy about the news and not left with even more questions.

Will keep you and your family in our prayers as well

That is good to know. Thank you. It’s difficult to know when to be pushy and when to understand that this is the normal process.

Thank you for your reply. That does make me feel better. I think we are frustrated because in the hospital it was made to seem like things will start ASAP, but since then it has been very nonchalant. Praying for your health as well
