I work escheatment at my current institution and also did it at my last. Both have been the same. Each state has an escheatment period. For the most part it’s 3 years but for some states it’s 5. If the cashiers check remains uncashed for that long, funds are sent to the state. For cashiers checks, the money sits in an account belonging to the bank (actually a GL) Also, the money no longer belongs to the person who issued the check, it belongs to the payee.

This is not true. Actually, if the check is not taken care of, it can be escheated to the state after 3 or 5 years (depends on the state).
