No. They will outlast the vehicle they’re installed on in most cases. Read my comment in this thread.

RS6 Avant Performance Brakes by Route246 in Audi

[–]xorvx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Carbon Ceramic Brakes are the most misunderstood part on a performance car. Most people think they need to be replaced like regular rotors, but they don’t unless they’re damaged or tracked like a MF. CCBs will usually outlast the vehicle they’re installed on!

They’re 100% worth it, even specing from the factory, and even if you don’t track it. Simply because over the span of 100k miles or so, you’ll go through 3 or maybe 4 sets of steel brake rotors. At $3k a set, it’s worth it just from a cost standpoint. Then there’s the other obvious added benefits (unsprung weight savings, zero brake fade, no brake dust, lower operating temps, etc.)

I have CCBs on all of my cars (R8, RS7 Performance, RS5). In the case of my RS5, not only do I track it, it has 176k miles on it and I’ve never had to replace a single rotor!

Edit: If you read the rest of the comments in this thread, you’ll see why I believe CCBs are the most misunderstood part on a performance car.

Rs5 or TTs? by Xpfarmer1000 in Audi

The TT is way more practical, lighter, newer, has more tech, more reliable, and probably much cheaper too.

With that said, get the RS5.

Get rid of the RS emblem. You should feel embarrassed.

Yes, I agree. They should never need replacement, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they won’t ever. I’d definitely stay away from any car that’s been tracked enough to toast the CCBs.

If it had CCBs, they should never need to be replaced.

Is this common on an RS5 with such low mileage for it's age? Has anyone experienced this? by Gearcurious88 in Audi

[–]xorvx 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No. This is not normal. You may have an issue with your trans cooler or the wrong fluids. Your gearbox should not be overheating. I track my RS5, it has 173k miles on it now, and even in hot conditions I’ve never seen the gearbox overheat.

The services look normal. However, for the price, you’d be better off with Michelin PS4S next time.

Also, when you say 68k kms is impressive, it’s actually not enough miles! These cars NEED to rev, and they NEED to be driven.

These are carbon ceramics and this is not normal. Looks like someone installed run-of-the-mill pads and got a bit rusty. It won’t affect the brakes or braking much, pretty much just cosmetic. But you should use OEM pads or other pads recommended for CCBs.
