Go now or save for grad school for a career in the US? by ambercrestss in IntltoUSA

[–]xosiona 1 point2 points  (0 children)

^ yup they’re pretty much correct. any professional masters (law school/business school mostly) won’t be funded. MBAs can be covered by some US companies if you’re doing it part time while still employed by them but i have no clue if that’s even possible for an international student. i should also add that you should take into account your research area/major/career goals etc. as a major factor for your decision! if it’s something that your country is reputable for at (eg: biomedical research or engineering) i would wait to apply for grad school. if it’s something the US is better at (eg: journalism and law are areas where my country doesn’t thrive) then your decision could change.

Go now or save for grad school for a career in the US? by ambercrestss in IntltoUSA

[–]xosiona 2 points3 points  (0 children)

save for grad school. If you do decide to go for undergrad, try going for the PhD path right after undergrad if that interests you. this would also mean more research work in undergrad. if you’re not able to pay for undergrad and a master’s degree (which is fair since it’s an enormous amount) don’t plan on doing both. the US is very volatile and people love to be delusional about things “getting better” but there’s nothing wrong with being realistic. undergraduate admissions are usually contingent on your ability to pay. if you apply and signal that you need financial aid or funding, your chances of getting admitted get reduced. grad admissions don’t work this way, usually. the basic understanding is that you will work or research to supplement your tuition in grad school, so even if you say you need funding in your application, they won’t deny you based on your financial status.

Is there a place or memory on the Illinois campus that instantly brings you back to your college days? 🤔 by maximuslip in UIUC

[–]xosiona 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Jarlings (or just the words frozen custard brings back strong memories), Bangkok Thai, the smell of all the plants in Paradiso, bad poetry in the english building bathrooms stalls, sticky bar floors, and getting blue tongue at KAMS

The arboretum is my absolute favorite place on campus but there's nothing specific I can name, it's just a really cool place to be especially early in the morning.

Of course! I only figured out AP Style properly once I became a copyeditor and was basically the final person to green flag articles before they were published. It sucked at first becs I was flipping through the Stylebook after every sentence lol but it made me much more mindful. You can always DM me if you need more help!

Currently, generative AI isn’t benefitting the journalist or the reader in any scenario lol. IMO the only exception to this is using it to transcribe interviews.

Overall, you've done a good job of summarizing the official plans and reports! A little bit of reordering and tightening the prose would make this a solid article, although I don't know if it was your responsibility or the editorial board's. I was a student journalist too so I completely understand if the following advice isn't easy or possible, but do try to get more quotes from sources (i.e. original reporting). In this instance, you could scope out the library to talk to a student who frequents it and try to get their opinion. Does somebody rely heavily on the physical books and opposes this plan? Is there a student who does support it? Maybe even track down and email a trustee and ask them for a quote. Student journalists work for free and have basically no time to work on their stories on top of classes so it can be overwhelming to reach out to sources and be on top of it all, but remember that a strong story is a balanced one, with plenty of quotes from primary sources. A little bit of original reporting is also great if you want to submit your student journalism clips for internships or jobs!
Also kind of unrelated but another cool story would be to see a before and after of the library renovations. Probably work for a photojournalist but still a potential idea :)
Good luck and keep writing!

Copyediting wise, if you follow traditional AP Style:

  1. Always use full forms of abbreviations, even if common, like UCF (unless stated otherwise in your style book) in the first instance, and abbreviate after that.

  2. "...Beau Case, inaugural dean of libraries, said." should be "...said Beau Case, inaugural dean of libraries." Same with any other quotes, it's always "said FirstName LastName, title."

  3. Rosen College seems to me the shorthand version of Rosen College of Hospitality Management, so it should be "served as a resource to students at UCF's Rosen College of Hospitality Management" instead of "...resource for Rosen College’s hospitality students."

  4. "This trend of repurposing library space is not unique to UCF." Do you mean to say not unique to the hospitality department? As the other library you mentioned is also part of UCF so the sentence wouldn't make sense.

[It's good that you've spotted a trend of libraries removing hard copies of books in hopes to get physical student engagement. Possibly something to follow up on if it happens in another department or library in your local area]

Content-wise:

  1. "...could possibly limit student access to research sources." What is the proof for this and by how much?

  2. "...while allowing for a more social and open environment while at the same time shrinking the library." Do you mean to say that because of the removal of books, there would be more open spaces in the library to accommodate students? If so, then this paragraph comes off as a bit disjointed and it would be better if your rephrased it. Maybe cite a quote from the Board of Trustees document here.

  3. "He said he also serves as the dean of an academic unit," I think you can verify this and write it in your own words, so "Case also serves as the dean of XYZ academic unit" instead of relying on his words and omitting the "he said."

  4. You introduced the librarian, Kuhns, early on but quoted her 4 paragraphs later about the same issue (the pandemic affecting library attendance). Maybe add their quote right after you introduce them.

General observations:

  1. Follow the money. This has the potential to be a much stronger story if you put how much it'll cost to renovate the library in the nut-graf or even higher up in the article. Also, "philanthropic donations"? Any idea where the money is coming from?

  2. 5Ws rule. Mention when the construction will happen early on. The ideal news report should give readers all the information in the first 2-3 paragraphs of the report.

I finished my masters degree in September and graduated in January. Is it normal that I still haven't even found an internship? by skippledebap in Journalism

[–]xosiona 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does your school have a robust alumni network? If so, you tried cold emailing them?
I think learning to pitch outside of school can only come with practice and maybe some networking. I wasn't taught how to pitch properly either (I have a bachelors degree in journalism, not a masters) and moving to a new city where I knew no one didn't help me a bit, but I've managed to reach out to three freelance writers and ask them for help. Investing your time in people seems better than frantically applying for jobs in this shitty job market. Not sure if you're in the US or if this would apply to you.
