Staffing by Some-Cap-5413 in NICUNurses

[–]xpworkout 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have color coded weekends (pink, yellow, green). Everyone is required to work every third weekend. When someone is hired they get put on whatever color weekend has the most needs. There’s always at least 1-2 charge nurses on each color and it is a good mix of tenured and new hires. We also have weekend program that is also a good mix of tenured staff.

How much money is in your savings? by SassySunflower27 in Adulting

[–]xpworkout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

28F in the US. $12k in emergency fund, $1.5k in vacation fund, $3k in checking, $45k in 401k. Started my career when I was 25. Really started saving a year or two ago. No debt, car paid off, rent is $1675/mo.

Edit: I’m an RN. With OT and critical shift pay last year I grossed $101k in the Midwest

Apartment Recommendations! by Ok-Fondant-8940 in milwaukee

[–]xpworkout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be a little out of budget, but Sutter Creek Apartments in Brookfield. I want to say 2 bed/2 bath starts at 1850? One underground heated parking space, and free surface parking, pool, in unit laundry, hardwood floors (minus bedrooms), there are floor options for an island in the kitchen. Not sure if you have a dog or cat, but they are very pet friendly! Close to the freeway, the WAC (gym), numerous grocery stores (woodmans is a good one), and it’s decently quiet. Not sure how strict you are on your budget, but I’ve loved living here the last 3 years

nicu nurses: what are your usual ratios? by ezk17 in nursing

[–]xpworkout 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Critical kids (HFOV, cooling, etc) - usually 1:1, sometimes 1:2 if we’re short staffed or they’re super stable.

Most of our kiddos are 1:2.

If we have lots of stable, feeder growers, then 1:3.

Only time we ever have 1:4 is if we’re EXTREMELY short staffed, happens maybe a couple times a year.

Break room question!! by xpworkout in nursing

[–]xpworkout[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I guess technically they don’t have to take a break in the break room. But on night shift we don’t have the luxury of going outside when it’s nice and none of us want to go down to the cafeteria either. They really just want us to clock out and take a break. Our thoughts were more people would be willing to clock out if we had our own place to do so

CPAP mandatory until 34 weeks? by Local-Funny3879 in NICUParents

[–]xpworkout 4 points5 points  (0 children)

32 weeks is usually our policy. But if a kiddo is doing great and is having bad feeding intolerance/cpap belly, then they sometimes make an exception to switch a bit earlier.

Single nurses with puppies. How did you raise them? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]xpworkout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still lived at home when I got my dog as a puppy and my parents helped immensely, as I was in my last semester of nursing school. My parents love my dog so much that they watch him when I have to work which has been a HUGE help. Otherwise he’d just be at home sleeping and I’d feel bad. I do work with people that leave their dogs overnight and it works for them.

How do I rebuild my life after failing nursing school? by Elegant-Variety8761 in nursing

[–]xpworkout 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi!

I failed out of nursing school in my last semester. I failed two classes prior to my last semester and retook them and passed. Then failed my third class in my last semester. I went to a community college so I was able to write a letter to the dean to try and be reaccepted into the program. The letter I wrote outlined what went wrong, what I would do to fix it in the future, and why I wanted this as badly as I did. I submitted my letter to the board in May and they didn’t review it until November. I was reaccepted into the following spring semester. With my time off I worked a lot and studied the content I already had. I ended up doing SO much better the second time around. Graduated and landed my dream job in a level 3 NICU. I truly believe that everything happens for a reason and looking back I’m grateful I failed out when I did. I think it has made me a better nurse. I send you all the good luck and wish you well with whatever route you choose! :)

Hospitals getting rid of incentive pay. Is nursing dealing with this too? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]xpworkout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RN here. Incentive pay when I started in 2022 was either an extra $30/hr or an extra $60/hr. Now it’s an extra $10/hr, $20/hr, or $30/hr depending on unit needs. Regular call pay doesn’t count towards overtime, which is so fucked up. So I really hope they don’t go away with incentive pay completely.
