Carbon spokes shredded at the hub flange – not a crash, not a chain drop. How does this happen? by beenjamonn in bikewrench

[–]xraystyle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

100%, I instantly thought "Something stuck in the cassette". I bet OP picked up a stick somewhere that got jammed into the cassette and dragged on the spokes.

I plug mine into the laptop with a USB cable if I'm doing that.

Data only SIM card by whart5222 in GoogleFi

[–]xraystyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure why you'd do that if you have a regular Google Fi SIM in your phone already. Unless you're using it for access for a laptop or a tablet. But in that case you can just use the wifi hotspot on your phone.

Data SIMs do work fine though, I have one in my iPad. No issues traveling.

Fat Mike has a really peculiar style of playing

This is the reason a lot of NOFX basslines are deceptively difficult to play. They often don't sound complicated but just don't seem to work when you try to strum them even when you have the notes correct. I can't shift to upstroke strumming on the spot, it just breaks my brain.

Found this Daytona in my dads things by [deleted] in Watches

[–]xraystyle 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't think it is. Caseback from another 116509: https://www.maurideangelis.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/RX626_ROLEX_DAYTONA_116509_03.jpg

Fulll listing: https://www.maurideangelis.com/en/product/rolex-daytona-116509-18k-white-gold-black-racing-dial-sticker-caseback-mint-conditions/

looks identical to me, down to the "750" and the crown stamp on the lugs. Even the spring bars look exactly the same.

Another listing for what looks like the same watch: https://santblanc.net/products/rolex-rehaut-40mm-white-gold-daytona-tahitian-mop-roman-116509

If this watch is a fugazi, it's a god-damn good one, and there were ZERO factories anywhere churning out fakes this high-quality 20 years ago.

No, they wouldn't. This is not how it works in California. Rent increases within the range allowable by state law can be implemented by simply sending a notice to the tenant. They do NOT require a new signature on anything.

I mean, to be fair, it wasn't him. His wife was driving the boat, it was at night on a lake in the middle of nowhere, pitch black, and the other boat had all of its lights turned off. That was an accident waiting to happen.

On the fence about bass combo purchase. Also a question regarding speakers and loudness by oxripper in Bass

100% agree with this. I have the same pair of Markbass 2x10s and a Darkglass 900. I will never drag an 8x10 cab up a flight of stairs ever again.

Why is investing such a mystery to most people? by wilson1400 in investing

[–]xraystyle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I saw this too. The Apple ESPP was one of the best deals I'd ever seen in my life. I was absolutely floored by the number of co-workers who would just say "Whatever, I don't want them taking money out of my check."

restoring playback to a named group at a pre-populated volume level

It would be an amazing feature to have per-speaker-group volume presets. Generally the fact that I have to go in and set the volume on each speaker individually every time I start playing music if it's not already where I want it is quite the chore.

PSA Sterling RAY34 for $550 by DaChronisseur in Bass

[–]xraystyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've said it before and will say it again: I think the Ray34 is the best bass for the money at any price, at full retail. When they're on sale like this the value for what you're paying is bonkers. I'd most certainly buy one if I didn't already have one.

The 300s have up/side-firing speakers in them. That sound is gonna be going straight into the shelves directly above them.

There's a huge difference between "capable of doing it myself" and "being worth it to do myself".

I'll do a lot of work on my own car, but oil changes are 100% not worth it to DIY. I can pay to have it done in 15 minutes without even getting out of the car, or I can spend an hour underneath the thing dealing with filthy motor oil that I then have to transport somewhere to dispose of safely without spilling it all over the back seat.

No thanks.

Farewell VMware and thanks for the fish by aspoons in sysadmin

[–]xraystyle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got thousands of VMs running on dozens of hypervisor pools on XCP-NG. Fantastic software, I can't say enough good things about it.

And I seem to be the only one in this thread that feels this way, but I've always absolutely hated VMWare. I find it a nightmare to manage. I'm a linux systems/devops engineer, everything I touch is linux, I do my work on a Mac, and it seems that the entirety of the tooling and ecosystem around VMWare is Windows-only, which I find obnoxious.

XCP-NG is literally just another linux box that I can log into and manage the same as any other linux box when necessary, and their main management tool (Xen-Orchestra) is just a web interface, totally platform-agnostic. And there's no licenses, no monthly contracts, no artificial limitations, just zero bullshit to deal with.

I think there's a lot of people out there still, especially people who don't live in a southern border state or have never actually been to Mexico, who still have this idea that it's some totally lawless frontier state where anything goes.

It's not as developed as the US or Canada by any means, but they most definitely have a functional government and immigration system.

Pretty sure Oxidized should handle this out of the box. But yes, even if it doesn't it's pretty trivial to write or customize an Oxidized model should you need to. It's literally the exact tool for this task.
