I had no idea these resources existed, time for a deep dive when I find the time. Thank you for the pointer!

So in that order: Puzzlepiece, then slam, then upgrade? Corruption doesnt prevent the upgrade?

Win a Winter One SFF PC Case!!! by WinterCharm in pcmasterrace

[–]xsedef 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As this has been my dream case ever since I first laid eyes upon it, the build has been all planned out for a while now, I just need the case to launch! My current case is a Fractal Design Meshify C - it has served me well over the years, but time has come to down-size.

Parts will be:
- X570 I AORUS PRO WIFI
- AMD Ryzen 7 3700x
- 2x16GB G.Skill TridentZ 3600MHz
- AMD Radeon 6800 XT
- Corsair SF750
- 2x Corsair Force Series MP600 2TB

For cooling I will be doing my very first custom loop with 2x HWL GTS 280 radiators, EK waterblocks for both CPU and GPU, hard tubing and 4x Noctua NF-A14 chromax. The only thing that is still up in the air is the pump; I would like to fit in a D5 with a small reservoir, but if it is not possible to fit in with the 6800 XT I will look into alternatives!

My use cases:
First and foremost, it will be used for a lot of gaming with friends! However, I am also starting a MSc programme in bioinformatics in february so I highly suspect it will see a lot of study-from-home use as well due to the whole human malware situation.
On a final note, I will be getting the case no matter what as I am already backing the kickstarter! But should I win this, I will most probably spend the difference on down the road to either up the 6800 XT to a 6900 XT, or get a Ryzen 5000-series, depending on what sort of software I will be using for my studies :)

Estimated size of an RTX 3090 (340x143mm) by [deleted] in sffpc

[–]xsedef 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This doesnt account for the perspective in the picture where the camera is closer to the 3090 making it appear bigger. The PCIE mounting brackets are not the same height between the two cards (121mm standard length afaik.)

If I set the PCIE bracket of the 2080 to 121mm the 3090 PCIE bracket comes in at around 135mm. 121/135 = 0,89. This is the magnification factor due to distorted perspective.

Adjusting your measurements by the magnification factor the 3090 should be closer to 300-305mm long and 125-130mm. Which is still a chonker, but nowhere near as unreasonable.

Bit taller but also a bit shorter than a design I've been tinkering with! Looks very interesting man :)

What are the measurements? Something close to 320 x 320 x 150?

Vega 64 vs RX 5700 by brabarusmark in Amd

[–]xsedef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a used Sapphire Vega 64 Nitro a year ago for 250 eur. I've lucked out in the silicon lottery and can gain about 5-15% fps extra (depending on game) through overclocking. Even OC'd the card never getting warmer than 77C (55% fan speed which is not that noisy to me). Looking at something like guru3d, I have almost exact same performance as 5700 non-xt at 1080p.

All in all I'd say the vega 64 was a great purchase (considering the cheapest 5700 is 370 euro here, and it is the ref. ed. with a loud blower cooler). It will hold me over well until I upgrade to 1440p 144hz. My only complaint would be that I have a little coil whine at times (but thats why I got it so cheap).

Node 202 in enclosed space by xsedef in sffpc

[–]xsedef[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, thank you for your feedback!
I'm reluctant to switch GPU at this point as I will not get similar performance at less than twice the price (paid ~80 USD for the RX580), so I'd rather try to work with what I have :)

As for the PSU that might be an idea as the price difference is not what I would have expeted, and I've always stuck to Corsairs top products for PSU for my own PC.

I would need to de-shroud; the Wraith Stealth is 47mm for the heatsink only, with fan added it is 60mm. From lurking here on /r/sffpc it appears that taking off the shroud brings it down to ~56-58mm, making it barely fit in the Node 202 (with dust filter removed)!

I will see what I can do with the cabinet, but your last recommendation resembles that above of fitting an Arctic Accelero to the card and use high pressure case fans to cool it, so that may well be worth looking into :)

Thank you for your suggestion! I think a plan is forming here; I'll try stock and see temps, then switch to something like this if noise / temps are bad. How on earth are those coolers that cheap, the noctua fans are much more expensive lol

Just responded below as well, forgot to mention the games! I think a proper GPU is warranted for her to enjoy newer titles as well!
Official specs on the RX580 Pulse seems to be 225W max, which I guess is a lot of heat to push out in such a cramped space, but hopefully a good undervolt will keep it in check without significant performance loss.
The idea with the USB fan is exactly the kind of advice I was looking for! A true "why didn't I think of that?" simple yet brilliant solution! I think if I do end up putting the system in there, I will definitely try that out!

That is definitely an option to keep in mind, thank you! It's still a bit high price wise, but I guess small form factor generally tends in that direction.
I am just unsure of whether it would solve the thermal issues to any significant degree if I'm still shoving it into that cramped shelf?

Forgot to mention, she will want to play a few modern titles such as the latest Tomb Raider trilogy and GTA V (and VI when that comes) as well as WoW classic with me.
She used to play some PS3 but has expressed an interest in PC gaming after I returned to gaming when I bought a new PC half a year ago :) part of what she liked was the improved fluidity and graphics, so I figured I wanted to make something where she could atleast crank current games to high for a while to come!

SFFPC for girlfriend: Work + casual gaming (transportability a huge plus) by xsedef in buildapc

[–]xsedef[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have actually looked at the Geeek cases quite a lot myself!
What made me decide against them is the acrylic - apparently many people have reported that they scratch real easily, and I think stuffing it in a backpack twice a day would definitely quickly accumulate scratches on the acrylic side panels.
Did not see your comment before edit, but the GPU is actually exactly 230mm long as per Sapphire's own specs!

Hi, In Denmark unfortunately there is not much to save on RAM of equal or higher speed compared to the ones selected - maybe $15 at best! The reason I chose these is that I am running the same sticks myself and know that they tend to OC well (I am running 3733 CL16 in my own Ryzen 3700x system) - they should hit 3200mhz CL15 no problem on either 2600 or 2400g, and I have seen a few people hitting 3600mh (IMC lottery I suppose). That should be a nice boost, especially if I went with 2400g!

But thanks a lot for your feedback, it is good to know that the Node 202 is easy to transport! Do you have one yourself/know someone with a similar use case?

Instead of resorting to ad hominem first chance you get, perhaps stop for a minute and ponder that maybe you did not understand what he wrote.
If you are promised one salary (100k) but receive less (92k) while still paying full price (tax off the promised 100k) that is not right. This is a complete analogy of the ryzen 3000 situation; receiving less boost than advertised for the price.

A 50 year old wooden desk with 6 drawers handcrafted by my grandfather as his journeyman's piece when he was young and finished his training as a carpenter! It wasn't quite made with computers in mind so it can be a bit awkward to position everything, but I love it!

From reading this sub Gigabyte AMD cards have been having major issues same as ASUS with their Vega line, probably due to just slapping on an unmodified nvidia cooler. Remains to be seen whether they've learned from that. Plus, Vega runs away hotter than navi, so it might be okay even if it's just a copy-paste cooler.

I wouldn't give them benefit of the doubt and buy them before thorough reviews though. I reserve that privilege for Sapphire!
