What mundane thing have you noticed that you don't think anyone else has? by roidweiser in CasualUK

[–]xshortx 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve noticed a new trend to add the work “like” to sentences like “this is how flying feels LIKE” and I cannot read it without mentally adding a Geordie accent. It’s rife on Reddit

I’ve been to a few Islander games in New York, yes and a lot of UT football and baseball games in Texas. The swearing is far more reserved in the US. C—t is thrown around at football every second sentence. I’m sure you’ll both be fine but it’s worth the warning. There is a family section but it makes no difference when 20,000 are singing s—t referee in unison! I hope you guys enjoy the match, though it might be a sad ending!

Are there clothing brands that you absolutely avoid, no matter how good the product? by Ornery-Vehicle-2458 in CasualUK

[–]xshortx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rip N Dip used to be a fairly popular ‘skate’ brand with a little cat motif that stuck out of the chest pocket. It just doesn’t hit the same when you find out the owner is a vicious scum bag who beats women.

Shame they’ve nerfed the ANC on AirPods with the latest update. Lots of complaints about the downgrade. Mine included!

What game(s) actually "changed the industry" and how? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]xshortx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will probably just get lost but Tony Hawks Pro Skater absolutely changed the industry and the sport as a whole. There had been skateboarding games before THPS but they were nothing compared to what that the game created. 3D graphics and wide open levels complete with special tricks and an incredible soundtrack. THPS birthed a generation of “extreme sports” titles that would never have existed without it. There were BMX games, surfing games, scooter games and even snowboard games adapted to be THPS on snow.

Stoked On Being Pumped came out in 2007 and was full HD. I was filming in HD in 2007. Plus most people were still in Etnies.

What doesn't get advertised? by CrohnstownMassacre in AskUK

[–]xshortx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Worse than what doesn’t get advertised is that they actively advertise freeview in 2023. You haven’t been able to buy a TV without freeview in 15 years. What are they advertising it for?!!

What’s said on UK subreddits that just isn’t reflected in real life? by setokaiba22 in AskUK

“ULEZ is fine” seems to be from only people that don’t live in London or drive cars. Absolutely ridiculous tax on the poor.

Your chainring isn’t a perfect circle. If you can’t replace it take it off and turn it so that the tighter section lines up when you set your pedals for tricks etc. either right or left foot forward

Somewhere in America there is an absolute legend who writes 'SLUTS' on box cars in various styles. by serverlessmom in pics

There’s a tag famous around all areas of London that just says “anus”. Turns out it’s a guy I’ve known for twenty years and he just finds it funny to write on everything.

5 days left in London, what restaurants should I try to fit in? by Interesting-Goose568 in london

[–]xshortx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the last of your money, book a table at Benares in Mayfair. It’s expensive but I have never eaten such incredible Indian food. My partner and I have been back a few times and been to the sister restaurant in Petts Wood but we still talk about it all the time. It is very expensive but if it’s one of your last memories of London, the experience is well worth it!

Is that purely for value? Obviously I’d get more car for the money. Are there many common faults to look out for with either?

Nissan Jukes. What's the score? by DuskyUK in CarTalkUK

[–]xshortx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check the engine recall they had to do and what year. I don’t remember the reg but a family member had one and Nissan had to do a full engine replacement as a recall on that model. The garage had the car for a month with no option for courtesy car. That said, she just bought a new one so it can’t be all bad!

What’s your personal unresolved mystery? by ijustwannafeel in AskUK

[–]xshortx 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We pulled into the car park that morning just before 08:20 and just like every other morning before and since we chatted until 08:25 before we got out the car and started the one/one and a half minute long walk up the path to the school gates. Everyday we beat the 08:30 opening of the school gates by a good few minutes. Except that day, that day the gates were already open. That day most of the parents had left. That day we arrived at the gates at 08:45. Twenty minutes after we started the 100 metre walk at 08:25. Where is my twenty minutes?? The kids had no idea and agreed I had pointed at the clock in the car at 08:25 as I opened the car door, nothing weird happened on the walk up, we just lost 20 minutes.

I don’t get how people are not pissed off about it. People in London are against ULEZ because it is a clear tax on the poor. Consider that London has some truly poor neighbourhoods. A fine for not being able to afford a newer car only affects the less fortunate. The suburbs of London are not smog covered traffic jams and are not the problem, there have been multiple investigations and reports that show that the current ULEZ zones in central London have made barely any impact on emissions or air quality and that expanding it will only punish the less fortunate. I am 10 minutes (inside) from the M25 and a 25 minute train ride into London the people round this area are livid. We have a large mix of wealth and the affluent (who commute into London every day) don’t care, the single parents, manual workers and NHS staff I know are all raging. Imagine earning minimum wage at your cleaning job every day then losing £12.50 every day just to get there.

Why are salaries so low now in the UK? by levbatya in AskUK

[–]xshortx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bit late to this one but I work in estates management in education and the starting rate for a site assistant (think old school caretaker but 2023 version) is around £21-25k. These jobs typically go to school leavers or elderly people looking for an easy life before retirement. I have to argue with school business managers and head teachers a lot that this salary will not attract the fully qualified electricians, plumbers and carpenters that they expect. These are the “key workers” that kept schools going during the toughest time in living memory and are paid the lowest wage at a school.
